noticed.

“Marcus?”

“I’m fine.”

“No, you’re crying.”

“Apparently this family has developed a surveillance department.”

Liam came closer.

“Is it good crying?”

Marcus laughed.

“Yes.”

“Then okay.”

Aaron waited.

“Marcus?”

He wiped his face.

“What?”

“I need your decision.”

He looked around my apartment.

The repaired wall.

Liam.

Me.

The couch where he had slept his first night indoors.

Boxes of evidence.

Everything that had happened because one grocery-store door kept opening and closing in the cold.

He inhaled.

“Add one sentence.”

Aaron groaned.

“Of course.”

Marcus almost smiled.

“What sentence?”

“That settlement does not restrict me from helping other tenants or workers provide truthful information.”

Aaron paused.

“That’s likely workable.”

“Then if they agree—”

He stopped.

I watched him.

“If they agree?”

Marcus looked at the boxes one last time.

“Then I sign.”

Two hours later, the revised draft arrived.

The sentence was there.

Aaron reviewed it.

Line by line.

No hidden release for Thomas.

No waiver of government cooperation.

No gag on Marcus’s story.

No repayment demand.

No admission by Marcus.

Personnel record corrected.

Safety certification.

Independent retaliation review.

Medical liens resolved.

Settlement amount.

Marcus held the signature page.

His hand shook.

“You sure?” Aaron asked over video.

Marcus looked at me.

I said nothing.

He nodded.

“Yes.”

Then he signed.

No music.

No celebration.

Just a pen moving across paper.

When he finished, he sat back.

Liam asked, “Did you win now?”

Marcus looked at him.

He thought for a long time.

Then shook his head.

“No.”

Liam frowned.

“Then what happened?”

Marcus looked toward the front door.

“I stopped losing.”

That night, after Liam went to bed, Marcus stood beside the couch.

“You know I can rent somewhere now.”

“When the money clears.”

“Yes.”

“You should.”

He looked at me.

“You want me gone?”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Neither of us pretended not to notice.

Marcus smiled faintly.

“I should still go.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you need a home that is yours.”

“And this?”

“This is ours.”

I meant Liam and me.

But the word landed strangely.

Marcus looked around.

Then at me.

“What happens after I move?”

I had no practical answer.

Dinner sometimes.

Coffee.

Repairs I didn’t need.

Phone calls.

Whatever friendship meant after surviving something that compressed months of trust into weeks.

“I don’t know.”

He nodded.

“Good.”

“Why is that good?”

“Because every time somebody told me exactly what happened next, they were usually wrong.”

I smiled.

Then his phone buzzed.

Thomas.

Marcus read.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He handed me the screen.

Independent employment review scheduled Monday.

Derrick too.

Then another message arrived.

From Aaron.

Federal workplace-safety investigators had requested an interview regarding Westmore.

Marcus stared at it.

The settlement was signed.

But the truth had not been bought.

It was only beginning to move beyond our kitchen.
