23 – Derek Finally Explained the Plan He Had Built Around Me, but His Version Broke Apart When Investigators Asked About the First Year

I did not attend Derek's interview.

I did not want to.

That surprised Dad.

“You don't want to hear him?”

“Not live.”

“Why?”

“Because I've spent years listening to him explain what happened.”

Dad nodded.

That was enough.

Harris later gave Mara an authorized summary of portions relevant to me.

Derek spoke for almost six hours.

Attorney present.

Recorder running.

No theatrical confession.

No sudden transformation.

He admitted pieces.

Denied others.

Reframed most.

He admitted creating Northgate.

He admitted moving money.

His explanation: asset management.

He admitted contacting Dr. Lawson.

Concern.

He admitted researching treatment.

Concern.

He admitted the trust.

Planning.

He admitted using Cynthia for signatures.

Convenience.

He admitted fake email communications.

Efficiency because I “avoided difficult tasks.”

He admitted hiring Cole before our relationship.

That one took longer.

According to Harris, Derek initially called it background research.

Investigators asked why he needed background research on a woman he had not met.

Derek said he was cautious about relationships.

They asked why Cole entered my apartment.

Derek blamed Cole.

They produced emails requesting photographs of financial documents.

Derek went quiet.

Mara read the summary aloud at my apartment.

Dad sat beside the window.

I listened without interrupting.

Investigators asked Derek why he paid Jenna to arrange our introduction.

He called it romantic persistence.

They asked about the notebook documenting my movements.

He said he was curious.

They asked why curiosity required my address.

No answer.

Then came the first year of our marriage.

That was where his story weakened.

Derek claimed the later financial and medical planning began only after he became worried about me.

Investigators produced the six-year-old Cole recording.

Money first.

Control the accounts, the house, the story.

You start years earlier.

Derek's attorney requested a break.

When they returned, his explanation changed.

He said he had been joking.

Investigators played another section.

If Emily leaves, she comes back.

Because I'll make leaving harder than staying.

Another joke.

Then another recording.

Frank is the problem.

Another joke.

Eventually Harris asked him a simple question.

How many jokes require shell companies?

Derek stopped answering.

I almost smiled.

Not because it was clever.

Because the question stripped away abstraction.

Mara continued.

Derek admitted moving my inheritance without fully informing me.

He denied intending to steal it permanently.

He claimed he planned to preserve it through the trust.

“Where he controlled it,” Dad said.

“Yes.”

He admitted obtaining lorazepam under Charles Carter's identity.

My stomach tightened despite knowing this already.

“What did he say it was for?”

Mara looked at me.

“Insomnia.”

“His?”

“He claims yours.”

I laughed softly.

“He obtained medication secretly for my insomnia.”

“Yes.”

“Under a dead man's name.”

“Yes.”

“Through his shell company.”

“Yes.”

“Without telling me.”

“Yes.”

Dad shook his head.

Mara continued.

Derek admitted giving me pills.

There it was.

Not inference.

Not just audio.

Admission.

He insisted he believed the dosage was safe.

He said he had only wanted me to sleep.

Investigators asked why he later told Cole he needed him to remember I was having memory problems.

Derek said he panicked.

“Did he admit giving them more than once?”

“Yes.”

My body went still.

“How many?”

“He says three.”

Hair testing could not give exact counts.

My memories suggested more than one.

Three was possible.

Maybe incomplete.

But an admission mattered.

“What nights?”

“One matches the kitchen recording. Two others correspond approximately with periods you've described.”

I stared at my hands.

Three nights.

Three mornings when Derek knew something about my mind that I did not.

“Did he apologize?”

Dad asked.

Mara looked at him.

“That's not in the summary.”

Good.

I did not need an apology carried secondhand.

Investigators moved to the psychiatric plan.

Derek admitted he hoped the facility would “stabilize” me.

They asked why he created a fake email account.

He said direct communication upset me.

They asked why Cynthia impersonated me at the facility.

He said the preliminary paperwork needed completing.

They asked why a mentally competent spouse could not complete her own paperwork.

He said I resisted.

They asked whether resistance meant incapacity.

He said no.

Then why build incapacity records?

Silence.

The plan did not survive plain questions.

That was its weakness.

Derek's system had depended on nobody seeing all the pieces together.

Once assembled, the sophistication became absurdity.

Dad asked, “Did he admit the birthday was staged?”

“Partially.”

My stomach tightened.

“What does partially mean?”

“He admitted he expected Frank to react to the bruise.”

Dad's face hardened.

“Expected?”

“He knew the bruise was visible.”

“What did he want me to do?”

“He claims nothing.”

Mara turned the page.

“But investigators confronted him with Birthday Contingency.”

Dad leaned forward.

“And?”

“Derek admitted he hoped your reaction would support his description of Emily's family as volatile and controlling.”

There.

Dad sat back.

“He wanted me angry.”

“Yes.”

“He thought I'd hit him.”

“Derek says he considered it possible.”

Dad looked at me.

The watch.

Again.

That small steel watch Mom gave him.

Taking it off.

Derek must have thought violence was coming.

Instead Dad sent me outside and asked questions.

The entire machine began failing because one angry man refused to behave the way another angry man expected.

I reached across and touched Dad's hand.

He looked surprised.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For not hitting him.”

Dad gave a sad smile.

“I wanted to.”

“I know.”

“Very much.”

“I know.”

Mara continued.

Investigators asked about the fake Frank affidavit.

Derek denied ordering Evan to impersonate Dad.

Then they showed the vendor emails.

The Northgate payment.

A message to Evan:

Need Bennett voice represented if real one won't cooperate.

Derek stopped denying.

He said the affidavit was a draft strategy that should never have been notarized.

Investigators asked why he ordered a fake ID.

No meaningful answer.

Then came the cabin.

Derek denied planning to take me there.

Evidence supported that Evan added the relocation language independently.

Important.

I felt relief I had not expected.

Not relief for Derek.

Relief for truth.

The most frightening version was not automatically the correct one.

That mattered.

Derek admitted he intended the cabin to create a false trail suggesting Dad had taken me away voluntarily if the treatment process became contested.

Dad whispered, “He was going to frame me.”

“Yes.”

Derek claimed it was only contingency planning.

Mara's expression said enough.

Then investigators asked why.

Not how.

Not what.

Why me?

Derek's answer was the one part I had not prepared for.

“He said he loved you.”

I stared at Mara.

Dad's face changed.

“What?”

“He said he loved Emily and believed she would eventually leave him.”

My first instinct was anger.

Then something quieter.

Recognition.

That was the center.

Not money alone.

Not sadism alone.

Not some brilliant scheme.

Fear.

Possession.

He believed love entitled him to prevent loss.

Mara continued.

“He said that before the relationship began, he became convinced Emily was the person he wanted. Once you were together, he interpreted independence as evidence you might leave.”

I swallowed.

“That doesn't explain what he did.”

“No.”

“Did he think it did?”

“I can't answer that.”

Good.

No amateur diagnosis.

No invented motive beyond his own words.

Derek told investigators the first time he grabbed me, he believed the marriage was “slipping.”

He started documenting more aggressively afterward.

When I visited Dad more often after Mom died, he saw Dad as a threat.

When I questioned money, he accelerated financial control.

When Rachel questioned signatures, he accelerated incapacity planning.

When Vanessa refused the affidavit, he looked for alternatives.

When Lawson refused support, he contacted the facility.

When the facility suspended intake, he turned to the birthday contingency.

Escalation.

Not inevitability.

Choices.

At each stage, Derek could have stopped.

He did not.

That distinction mattered more than motive.

I asked Mara, “Did he say why he hit me two nights before my birthday?”

She looked down.

“He said you told him you were going to stay with Frank if he wouldn't show you the accounts.”

I remembered.

Yes.

Not exactly those words.

But close.

I had stood near the front door.

Keys in hand.

“I said I needed space.”

Mara nodded.

“He interpreted that as leaving.”

“So he slapped me.”

“Yes.”

Dad stood and walked to the window.

I watched his shoulders.

Mara continued.

“Derek says he immediately regretted it.”

I felt nothing.

Maybe that was progress.

Maybe exhaustion.

“He didn't regret it enough to tell Dad the truth.”

“No.”

“Or cancel the plan.”

“No.”

“Or stop calling me unstable.”

“No.”

Regret without change was just another feeling.

Not repair.

Investigators asked Derek whether he expected Dad to notice the bruise.

He admitted he knew it was possible.

Why not cancel dinner?

Because canceling would look suspicious.

So he kept the dinner.

Prepared branches.

Accident.

Angry father.

Unstable wife.

Emergency services.

Treatment.

The whole plan balanced on one assumption.

That I would remain quiet.

And for the first minutes, I did.

Then Dad asked if I was afraid.

I said yes.

One word.

That was where Derek's planning truly failed.

Not when Dad arrived.

Not when police arrived.

When I answered honestly.

Mara closed the summary.

“That's the relevant portion.”

Dad turned.

“What happens now?”

“Negotiations may begin.”

“Plea?”

“Possibly.”

“Divorce?”

“Likely settlement discussions.”

I asked, “Do I have to speak to Derek?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Mara studied me.

“Would you want to if given the choice?”

I thought about it.

Years earlier, yes.

I would have needed explanation.

Needed him to understand my pain.

Needed an apology shaped perfectly enough to make the past comprehensible.

Now?

“No.”

Dad nodded.

No approval.

Just acceptance.

My temporary phone rang.

Harris.

He had one final update from Derek's interview.

“Emily, there's something you should know.”

“What?”

“Derek gave us a password.”

“For contain?”

“We're still opening it.”

“Why did he give it to you?”

“His attorney says it's part of cooperation.”

I almost laughed.

Even cooperation had conditions.

Harris continued.

“We've opened the index.”

“And?”

“It's organized by cold.

“Mine?”

“Yes.”

“Dad?”

“Yes.”

“Rachel?”

“Yes.”

“Who else?”

“Some names we don't recognize.”

Dad moved closer.

Harris said, “Emily, your folder is not the oldest.”

I stared at the wall.

“What does that mean?”

“There are files predating the fundraiser where Derek first saw you.”

“How far?”

“Three facts.

But the implication was there.

My marriage had not invented Derek's methods.

I had simply become the person around whom he built his most elaborate
