something that had occupied years stop deserving every hour?

My therapist said trauma often feared irrelevance.

If I stopped thinking about Derek, did that mean it had not mattered?

No.

It meant the event had moved from present tense.

That helped.

I dated nobody.

Not because I feared relationships permanently.

Because I did not want one.

That answer was enough.

People kept asking whether I would “try again.”

As if being single were an unfinished recovery.

Not everything.

I used part of it to create a small emergency fund.

The first account I had ever controlled completely on my own.

It was not a huge amount.

Still, I looked at the balance with unreasonable satisfaction.

I understood every line.

Every transfer.

Every password.

No mystery.

Jonah once joked I had become annoyingly financially literate.

I told him he had only himself to blame.

Dad eventually sold the cabin.

That decision surprised me.

“You love that place.”

“I loved it with your mother.”

“Then why sell?”

He shrugged.

“Memories aren't visited once.

Then decided he was finished.

Not every reclaimed place needed to be kept.

Sometimes release was reclamation too.

Before selling, he asked whether I wanted anything.

I took one thing.

An old chipped mug Mom used there.

Blue handle.

Nothing valuable.

No legal dispute.

No appraisal.

Just hers.

The sapphire ring I wore sometimes.

Not every day.

At first I wore it constantly.

Proof.

Then one morning I forgot.

I arrived at work without it.

Panic surged.

For three seconds, the old fear.

I lost it.

I can't remember.

Something is wrong with me.

Then I stopped.

Checked my jewelry dish that evening.

There it was.

Exactly where I left it.

I laughed alone in my bedroom.

That moment meant more than getting the ring back.

Forgetting did not make me unreliable.

People forgot.

Lost keys.

Misplaced mugs.

Missed appointments.

Human memory was allowed to be imperfect.

Derek had taken normal imperfection and weaponized it.

I did not need to respond by becoming perfect.

One afternoon, Harris called.

We had not spoken in months.

My body still reacted to his name.

Adrenaline.

Expectation.

He noticed when I answered.

“Nothing bad.”

I laughed.

“You should lead with that.”

“Noted.”

He called because the last evidentiary issues involving Evan had resolved.

Evan received his own sentence after convictions and plea-related dispositions tied to the break-in, fraudulent identity use, unlawful surveillance, and other conduct.

Again, Harris did not dramatize.

He simply wanted me to know there were no known remaining active threats connected to the case.

“Security assessment can be reduced if you want.”

I looked out my office
