lowered her hands.

“Charles was his legal father.”

“Biological?”

“No.”

Julian stared.

“Then who?”

Margaret looked at me.

For one impossible second, I thought she would say Arthur.

She did not.

“Raymond.”

Silence.

Peter was Raymond’s son.

Laura’s half brother.

Julian’s cousin.

Another child hidden inside the same history.

I sat back.

“Did Arthur know?”

“Yes.”

“Of course he did.”

Margaret wiped her eyes.

“Arthur discovered it shortly before Peter was born.”

“And Charles?”

“He knew.”

“Why raise Raymond’s child?”

“Because Charles believed Peter was his until late in the pregnancy.”

“And then?”

“By then he loved the idea of him.”

I understood that sentence more than I wanted to.

“Did Peter know Raymond was his father?”

“No.”

“Not until recently?”

Margaret shook her head.

“Not until Peter found the original birth record.”

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

The same period in which his behavior changed.

The same period in which he began calling me directly.

“What did he do when he learned?”

“He confronted me.”

“And then?”

“He went to Raymond.”

“What happened?”

“Raymond laughed at him.”

Julian closed his eyes.

“That sounds like Raymond.”

“What did Peter want from him?”

“An explanation.”

“Did he get one?”

“No.”

“What did Raymond want?”

“Peter to help him pressure the trust.”

“Did Peter?”

“I don’t know.”

That uncertainty mattered.

Peter had warned me.

He had also withheld evidence.

He had infiltrated Natalie’s scheme.

He had worked with his mother.

He had spoken with Raymond after discovering Raymond was his father.

Every loyalty in his life had changed at once.

Bell’s phone rang again.

He answered.

Listened.

Then asked, “Are you certain?”

The room went still.

He ended the call.

“Peter regained consciousness.”

Margaret stood.

“Can I speak to him?”

“Not yet.”

“Did he say what happened?”

“Yes.”

Bell looked at Rebecca.

“Peter says someone put something in his coffee.”

“Who?”

“He doesn’t know.”

“Where?”

“At the motel.”

“Raymond?”

“He says Raymond was not there.”

“Natalie?”

“No.”

“Daniel?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Bell turned toward me.

“He says the person who met him was Laura.”

Julian stared.

“Laura poisoned him?”

“That is not what he said.”

“What did he say?”

“Peter says Laura warned him not to drink the coffee.”

Margaret went white.

“Then who brought it?”

Bell looked down at his notes.

“A motel employee.”

“Working for whom?”

“We don’t know.”

“What happened to Laura?”

“She disappeared before Peter lost consciousness.”

I leaned forward.

“Did Peter tell you why they met?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Laura had Arthur’s final letter.”

“I thought Peter had it.”

“He did when police found him.”

“Then she gave it to him.”

“Apparently.”

“What does the letter say?”

Bell looked at me for a long moment.

“It contains instructions Arthur wanted followed if Raymond ever resurfaced.”

“Instructions to whom?”

“To Laura.”

I felt another piece shift.

“What instructions?”

Bell opened his notebook.

“Arthur told her to contact you.”

“Why?”

“Because he said there was one truth about the warehouse money, Raymond and the forged signature that only Laura could prove.”

My heart beat harder.

“What truth?”

Bell met my eyes.

“That Arthur did not discover the forgery after the loan closed.”

The room became completely silent.

I remembered Elaine’s account.

Arthur had discovered the forged consent and then concealed it.

But Bell was saying Arthur’s own final letter contradicted that timeline.

“When did he discover it?”

Bell’s voice was careful.

“Before.”

“Before what?”

“Before the bank released the money.”

My hands went cold.

Arthur had known my signature was false before the transaction became final.

He could have stopped it cleanly.

He could have told me.

He could have protected the house.

Instead, according to the letter he left Laura, he had allowed the money to move anyway.

“Why?” I whispered.

Bell looked at the final line he had copied from Arthur’s letter.

“Because by then, Arthur said, stopping the loan would have exposed what he had already done with the first transfer.”

I stared at him.

“What first transfer?”

Bell closed the notebook.

“The one made before Raymond forged your signature.”

<a
