Grandpa drank coffee like burnt dirt.”

Despite the room, Noah almost smiled.

That description was accurate.

Lily said she screwed the lid back on and set it she returned.

That explained the second visit.

“What did he tell you about Lily?”

“He said Lily had been there alone.”

“How did he lawyer tried to quiet her.

She ignored him.

Mercer had come to her office three weeks earlier.

He knew about the first fraud from twenty years ago.

He had copies.

He told Brenda that unless she notarized the new guarantee, he would provide evidence to prosecutors showing she knowingly participated in the earlier attempted changed.

The sister who once protected everyone was running out of mercy.

Ruiz opened Arthur’s video files from Noah’s box.

She compared the porch camera hallway.

I knew the closet.

It sat behind the laundry room.

Arthur had lived beside it for twenty years.

Ruiz opened the door.

Behind detergent and paper towels sat a small black digital recorder.

The device looked ordinary.

Its case had been forced open.

Someone had removed the original storage card.

A replacement card sat inside.

Meaning the files on Noah’s backup were not complete.

The missing twelve minutes had been deleted at the source before Arthur copied what remained.

Unless Arthur had another copy.

Noah looked at the gray box.

“There’s another envelope.”

I had forgotten it beneath the notebook.

This one was addressed to Lily.

Her hands shook as she opened it.

Arthur wrote that he knew she had taken a sip from the thermos.

He teased her about pretending otherwise when she made a face.

Then the tone changed.

He told her if anything happened to him, she should remember the man standing across the street when she left.

Lily froze.

“What man?”

Arthur wrote:

You looked at him twice.

Do not let anyone tell you that you imagined him.

Lily closed her glasses.”

Hale.

But he was supposedly not involved in the poisoning.

Ruiz called the jail.

Hale agreed to another interview.

He admitted watching Arthur’s house.

Not that night, he claimed.

But on several nights earlier.

“Why?”

Because Mercer told him Arthur planned to report the lending him.

Then he said something more useful.

Mercer had hired a former investigator named Calvin Price for surveillance work.

Thomas stiffened.

“That’s the him.”

Calvin Price had been outside our house the night Arthur died.

We now had a new player.

Ruiz searched his records.

Former private Did not let him inside.

Calvin Price.

At 10:52.

Five minutes before the video gap began.

Arthur did not let him inside.

But Price may not have needed the front door.

Our fence had a side gate.

The utility closet had an exterior access panel installed years earlier for the old HVAC system.

I knew because I repaired it.

A man could reach the camera recorder without entering the house.

Ruiz immediately sent officers to Price’s address.

I looked at Lily.

“If he deleted twelve minutes, what was on them?”

Nobody knew.

Then Claire asked the question that mattered more.

“What happened at 10:57?”

We reconstructed the night.

Mark left at 9:07.

Brenda’s first visit had already happened.

Kevin arrived around 10:16 and left before 10:57.

Calvin appeared at the back gate at 10:52.

The camera gap began five minutes later.

Then by 11:09, the video resumed.

Brenda’s second visit occurred around 11:31.

So the deleted twelve minutes sat between Kevin and Brenda.

A perfect window.

The poisoning could have happened then.

Ruiz’s phone rang.

Officers at Price’s residence had found the house empty.

But his detached garage contained equipment.

Camera cards.

Cloned access badges.

Prescription bottles.

And one item that made Ruiz stop speaking mid-sentence.

A stainless-steel travel mug.

Not Arthur’s thermos.

But it contained traces of digoxin.

My stomach dropped.

“Did Price mix it?”

“Maybe.”

“Then give it to Brenda?”

“Maybe.”

Lily whispered, “Or switch the coffee.”

Ruiz looked at her.

Exactly.

Price could have entered through the side gate, accessed the porch, tampered with the drink, deleted surveillance, and left.

But why would Arthur later let Brenda warm the coffee without noticing bitterness?

Unless the poison was introduced after her visit.

That brought us back to the timeline.

Around midnight.

Arthur died shortly after.

Another deleted or missing encounter had to exist.

The gray box held one final note.

Noah read it aloud.

If the twelve minutes disappear, Calvin did what Jonathan told him.

If I die, find the man who comes after the camera is restored.

Claire stared.

“What does that mean?”

Ruiz rewound the porch footage.

After the gap.

11:09.

The camera resumed.

For twenty-two minutes nothing happened.

Then Brenda arrived.

After she left, Arthur drank.

Then at 11:52, only minutes before the file ended, headlights appeared.

A car stopped just outside camera range.

A figure crossed the lower edge of the frame.

Only a shoulder.

Dark jacket.

Then the recording abruptly ended.

Noah enlarged the final frame.

The person’s left hand appeared near the porch post.

A large silver ring.

Claire gasped.

I looked at her.

“What?”

She whispered,

“I know that ring.”

Ruiz turned.

“Who?”

Claire looked toward the hallway.

Toward the room where her brother once slept when he visited.

Then back at us.

“Kevin.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Kevin’s Silver Ring Put Him Back on the Porch After Brenda Left, but Arthur’s Last Phone Call Revealed Why He Returned

By the time Noah and I returned to the house, Brenda was sitting at the dining table with a lawyer I had never met.
