Mary Lou had believed she would remember each photograph, receipt, letter, and scrap of handwriting forever.

Time had made other arrangements.

She pulled the box into the hallway.

The tape had already been cut years earlier.

Inside were things nobody had considered evidence.

A scarf.

Birthday cards.

Two recipe notebooks.

A church bulletin.

Photographs.

A cheap pair of reading glasses inside a cracked plastic case.

Mary Lou picked up the glasses.

One arm was bent.

She remembered Theresa pushing them onto the top of her head and then spending ten minutes searching the kitchen for them.

The memory arrived so clearly that Mary Lou laughed.

Then she covered her mouth.

The hallway was silent.

She laughed again anyway.

There were photographs beneath the notebooks.

Theresa at a picnic.

Theresa beside a Christmas tree.

Theresa making an irritated face at whoever held the camera.

In one picture, Mary Lou stood beside her.

They were both younger.

Mary Lou had forgotten the shirt she was wearing but remembered Theresa complaining that day about mosquitoes.

Memory was ridiculous in its priorities.

At the bottom of the box lay a small cassette tape.

Mary Lou frowned.

A handwritten label read:

*ML — if needed**

Her stomach tightened.

She turned the cassette over.

Nothing else was written.

For nearly a minute she remained on the hallway floor holding it.

The old instinct returned immediately.

Evidence.

Secret.

Warning.

Another message from the dead.

Mary Lou almost called Ji-hoon.

Instead she laughed once, without humor.

“Really?”

The empty house offered no opinion.

She found a cassette player online.

Two days later it arrived.

Mary Lou placed it on the kitchen table.

The tape fit with a mechanical click.

Her finger hovered over PLAY.

Then she pressed it.

Static.

A scraping noise.

Theresa coughed.

Mary Lou closed her eyes.

The voice was unmistakable.

Older than Mary Lou remembered it, perhaps because Theresa had recorded the message during the period when fear had already begun exhausting her.

“Mary Lou,” the recording began, “if you are hearing this, then either I finally got brave or something went badly.”

Mary Lou opened her eyes.

Theresa continued.

“I hope it was the first one.”

A pause followed.

Then a chair creaked.

Theresa said she had begun keeping copies because people were lying about where documents went.

She did not name Choi immediately.

She did not name Lee.

Instead she spoke about small things.

Passports taken “for processing” and not returned.

Wages deducted for invented debts.

People told that leaving would cause trouble for relatives.

Documents altered without explanation.

Theresa’s voice became quieter.

“I kept telling myself I only saw pieces.”

Mary Lou gripped the edge of the table.

“I told myself pieces were not enough to know the whole thing. Maybe that was true at first.”

The tape hissed.

“Then I had too many pieces.”

Mary Lou did not move.

Theresa described discovering that some of the records she had been asked to store contradicted what workers had been told.

She described copying names.

Dates.

Payments.

She admitted hiding documents from Mary Lou.

“I thought if you knew, you would confront somebody.”

Mary Lou whispered, “You were right.”

Theresa’s recorded voice continued.

“And I thought if you confronted them, they would hurt you.”

Mary Lou stared at the cassette player.

There it was.

The old argument.

Protection through ignorance.

Love converted into control by fear.

Theresa seemed to anticipate the accusation.

“That does not mean I had the right.”

Mary Lou’s breath caught.

“I know that now.”

Silence followed long enough that Mary Lou thought the recording had ended.

Then Theresa spoke again.

“I kept waiting until I could make everything safe before telling you. There was never going to be a safe time.”

Mary Lou looked toward the window.

Outside, bare branches moved in the wind.

Theresa named no new crimes.

No hidden conspirator.

No missing account.

The tape contained nothing prosecutors needed.

It was not evidence.

It was an explanation.

An imperfect one.

Theresa said she had hidden copies in several places because she no longer trusted any single person to hold them.

The basement eventually became the largest collection.

She hoped somebody would find it.

She feared somebody would.

Both statements were true.

Then her voice changed.

Less careful.

More personal.

“Mary Lou, if this reaches you, do not spend your life trying to understand every choice I made.”

Mary Lou felt tears gathering.

“I did some things because I was scared. Some because I thought I was helping. Some because I was wrong.”

The tape clicked faintly.

“You can love me and still be angry.”

Mary Lou pressed one hand against her mouth.

Theresa added, “You always were good at being angry.”

A laugh escaped Mary Lou through the tears.

“Terrible woman.”

The recording continued for another minute.

Theresa told her where a few ordinary belongings were stored.

She mentioned the recipe notebook.

She complained that Ji-hoon owed her a container.

Then, near the end, she said, “If you get out of this, don’t build another basement in your head.”

Mary Lou stopped breathing for a moment.

Theresa’s voice softened.

“Doors are useful. Locks are useful. But you have to come upstairs sometime.”

The tape ended with a click.

Mary Lou remained at the kitchen table.

She did not rewind it.

Not immediately.

She cried.

This time she allowed herself to cry without analyzing what kind of grief it was.

Anger was there.

Love.

Relief.

Regret.

The absurd comfort of hearing Theresa complain again.

Nothing became simple.

That was precisely why the recording felt true.

Mary Lou called Ji-hoon that evening.

When she told him about the cassette, he went silent.

“She mentioned you,” Mary Lou said.

“That sounds dangerous.”

“You owed her a container.”

Ji-hoon groaned.

“The glass one?”

“She didn’t specify.”

“I knew she remembered.”

Mary Lou laughed.

Then Ji-hoon asked, “What else?”

She told him.

Not every word.

Enough.

When she repeated the line about not building another basement in her head, Ji-hoon was quiet.

“That sounds like her too.”

“Yes.”

“What will you do with the tape?”

Mary Lou looked at it.

“I don’t know.”

“You could digitize it.”

“I probably will.”

“And the original?”

“I’ll keep it.”

He did not ask whether that contradicted throwing away the key.

It did not.

Mary Lou understood the difference.

The key had represented access to a room whose power was finished.

The tape contained a voice she still wanted to hear.

Keeping something was not the same as being trapped by it.

The following Sunday, Mary Lou listened again.

This time she made coffee first.

She sat comfortably.

She laughed sooner.

Cried less.

She noticed details she had missed: Theresa tapping something against the table, traffic outside, the faint ring of a telephone in another room.

Ordinary sounds around extraordinary fear.

Mary Lou digitized the recording.

She made two copies.

One she kept.

One she sent to Ji-hoon.

She also told Detective Park the tape existed.

He asked the expected questions.

Did Theresa name anyone not previously identified?

No.

Did she describe any unknown offense?

No.

Did she provide locations of additional evidence?

No.

“Then it is yours,” Park said.

Mary Lou smiled.

“Good.”

Before Christmas, she finally sorted the rest of Theresa’s box.

She kept the photographs.

The recipe notebooks.

The glasses.

Several cards.

She discarded expired coupons, old advertisements, and a stack of appliance manuals for appliances nobody owned anymore.

The act felt almost sacrilegious for about ten seconds.

Then Mary Lou imagined Theresa’s reaction to preserving a twenty-year-old toaster manual for emotional reasons.

She threw it away.

Inside one recipe notebook, Theresa had written measurements with infuriating vagueness.

*Enough flour.**

*Some milk.**

*Cook until done.**

Mary Lou called Ji-hoon.

“This woman had no respect for reproducibility.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Her recipes.”

“Ah.”

“What does ‘some milk’ mean?”

“Some milk.”

“You are no help.”

“I learned from her.”

Mary Lou attempted one recipe anyway.

The first batch was terrible.

The second was edible.

The third tasted close enough that the first bite stopped her.

Not identical.

Memory had probably improved the original.

Still, close.

She carried a plate to the living room.

Theresa’s photograph remained on the shelf.

Mary Lou placed one of the pastries beside it.

Then she reconsidered.

“That’s ridiculous.”

She ate it herself.

On New Year’s Eve, Ji-hoon called just before midnight in Mary Lou’s time zone.

It was already the new year for him.

“You’re calling from the future,” she said.

“It is disappointing.”

“Any useful information?”

“You still complain.”

“Then the timeline is stable.”

They talked until the year changed.

Mary Lou did not make resolutions.

She had become suspicious of promises made simply because a calendar turned.

But after the call ended, she went to the kitchen.

Theresa’s cassette sat in a drawer.

Mary Lou touched the handle.

Then left it closed.

She did not need the voice tonight.

That realization did not feel like loss.

It felt like peace.

Click here to continue reading: PART 27: THE DOOR LEFT
