It spoke of what they were building and the future they believed waited for them. Nothing about the message sounded like an employer addressing a worker.

I searched the envelope again.

A newspaper clipping remained inside.

The paper had yellowed and become brittle along the folds. The headline announced that two local partners had secured an important construction-supply contract.

Ernest Sullivan.

Samuel Harrison.

Partners.

I read the article twice.

According to the reporter, the men had begun with a small warehouse, one unreliable truck, borrowed money, and an ambition to create something their families might inherit.

Families.

Inherit.

I thought of our leaking roof.

Mom cutting coupons at the table.

Caleb wearing Noah's old boots because there wasn't money for new ones.

None of it fit.

If Dad had helped create the company that eventually made Ernest Sullivan wealthy, why had Samuel Harrison's children grown up counting coins for groceries?

I searched the drawer.

It appeared empty.

Then I noticed a narrow seam in the wood.

I pressed it.

The bottom shifted.

A false panel lifted beneath my fingers.

Underneath lay a financial statement.

HARRISON SETTLEMENT ACCOUNT.

I read the balance.

$1,500,000.

My supposed price.

Except the account had not been opened for my wedding.

The date showed it had existed for nine years.

I had been eleven years old.

Footsteps sounded behind me.

I turned.

Ernest stood in the doorway wearing a robe over his clothes. He looked exhausted but unsurprised.

I held up the statement.

"What is this?"

"The account."

"Don't do that."

His mouth tightened.

"Don't answer questions as though I'm supposed to know the rest."

He entered the study.

"Why was there a Harrison account containing exactly the amount everyone told me you were paying for this marriage?"

Ernest stopped across from the desk.

"Because that money was never payment for you."

My chest tightened.

"Then why did Mom let me believe it was?"

"That is something Helen must explain."

"No."

I pushed back the chair.

"You don't get to hand every ugly answer to my mother. You arranged the marriage. You sent Mrs. Josephine. You knew my father. You knew about me before I was born."

"I knew of you."

"That's not better."

"No," he admitted.

I held up the photograph.

"What did Dad do for you?"

Ernest looked at Samuel's younger face.

"Not for me."

"What?"

"With me."

I stared at him.

"He owned part of the company."

"Yes."

"How much?"

Ernest hesitated.

"Half."

For a moment, I thought I'd misunderstood.

"Half?"

"Samuel and I began as equal partners."

I looked around the study, at the shelves, the expensive furniture, the quiet evidence of wealth.

"What happened to his half?"

Ernest lowered himself into a chair.

"That's where everything became complicated."

"It always seems complicated when the rich person still has the money."

He flinched.

I was glad.

"My family nearly lost our house."

"I know."

"Mom skipped meals."

"I know."

"My brothers wore clothes until they fell apart."

"I know."

"And you lived here knowing Dad had owned half of the business that made you rich?"

Ernest closed his eyes.

"Yes."

Something inside me snapped.

"You stole it."

"No."

"What would you call it?"

He looked at the photograph.

"Samuel transferred his ownership to me."

"Why?"

"The company was close to collapsing. A major contract had gone wrong. Creditors were circling. Samuel had personal exposure that could have brought everything down."

"So he put the shares in your name temporarily."

"Yes."

"And when the danger passed, you were supposed to return them."

Ernest said nothing.

My stomach dropped.

"You didn't."

"Not immediately."

"How long?"

"Too long."

I laughed bitterly.

"That's a wonderfully inexpensive phrase for stealing half a company."

"I did not intend to steal anything from Samuel."

"But you kept it."

"For a time."

"And then he died."

Ernest's face tightened.

"Yes."

I paced toward the fireplace.

"Did Mom know?"

"She knew about the transfer."

"Is that why she hates you?"

"Partly."

"What's the other part?"

He looked at me.

"She blamed me for Samuel's death."

The room became suddenly quiet.

I turned.

"You told me his death wasn't your fault."

"It wasn't."

"Then why would she blame you?"

"Because Samuel became involved in something dangerous through the company."

"What?"

"Fraud."

The word felt strangely small compared with everything surrounding it.

"What kind?"

"False vendors. Duplicate invoices. Money being redirected."

"How much?"

"We originally believed perhaps fifty thousand dollars."

"And?"

"Eventually, the discrepancy approached four hundred thousand."

Thirteen years earlier, it would have been a fortune.

"Who was stealing it?"

"Samuel wanted to find out."

"You didn't?"

"I was trying."

"Did Dad discover who?"

Ernest's gaze shifted.

"Yes."

My pulse accelerated.

"Who?"

Before he answered, the telephone rang.

The sound made both of us jump.

It was nearly midnight.

Ernest stared at the phone.

It rang again.

"Who calls this late?"

No answer.

Third ring.

Fourth.

Ernest picked up.

"Sullivan."

I watched his face.

Within seconds, the remaining color disappeared from it.

"Where did you hear that?"

Silence.

"No."

His fingers tightened around the receiver.

"No, she doesn't know."

I stood.

Whoever was calling knew about me.

Ernest turned slightly away.

"That agreement was private."

Another silence.

Then he said, "Samuel has been dead thirteen years. Leave his daughter out of this."

My entire body went cold.

The line disconnected.

Ernest remained motionless.

"Who was that?"

He replaced the receiver carefully.

"Ernest."

Instead of answering, he walked to the study door and locked it.

Then he crossed the room and pulled the curtains shut.

"What are you doing?"

"The marriage happened sooner than I intended."

I stared at him.

"What?"

"I believed I had more time."

"More time for what?"

"To place certain things beyond their reach."

"Whose reach?"

He looked at the settlement statement.

"People who believe Samuel's death ended their problem."

I stepped closer.

"Who called?"

Ernest's eyes moved toward the photograph.

"My brother."

I hadn't known he had one.

"What's his name?"

"Richard."

"Richard Sullivan?"

"Yes."

"Did he work for the company?"

"For several years."

My mind raced back to the fraud.

"Did Dad suspect Richard?"

Ernest's silence answered.

"Was Richard stealing the money?"

"I never proved it."

"Did Dad think he was?"

"Yes."

I sat slowly.

"Was Richard the person Dad was going to confront?"

"I don't know."

"Then why is he calling tonight?"

"Because he learned about our marriage."

"Why does he care?"

Ernest rubbed his forehead.

"Because I have been changing my estate."

I stared at him.

There it was.

The legal reason.

"You married me because of your will."

"Partly."

"What am I inheriting?"

"Something Richard desperately doesn't want Samuel Harrison's daughter to possess."

My heart pounded.

"What?"

Ernest crossed to a painting behind the desk and lifted it from the wall.

A safe was hidden beneath it.

He entered the combination and removed a small wooden box.

Inside lay an old brass key attached to a faded tag.

B-17.

I picked it up.

"What does this open?"

"A storage unit outside Pittsburgh."

"Dad's?"

"Yes."

"When did he rent it?"

"Three days before he died."

I looked up sharply.

"Have you opened it?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"The lease wasn't mine. Records were lost when the facility changed ownership. The property became tied up in litigation and was eventually sealed."

"Then why keep the key?"

"Because Samuel mailed it to me the morning before he died."

I turned the brass key in my hand.

"What's inside?"

"I don't know."

"After thirteen years?"

"I tried to find out."

He opened the safe again and removed an envelope.

"This arrived last week."

Inside was a notice from the storage company. Unit B-17 had finally been cleared for access. Ernest, listed as secondary contact, could retrieve its contents beginning November twentieth.

Three days away.

"Whatever Dad put there has been sitting untouched all this time?"

"As far as I know."

"What do you think he hid?"

Ernest looked toward Samuel's photograph.

"The proof he was afraid somebody would destroy."

A floorboard creaked outside the study.

We both froze.

Another sound followed.

Closer.

Ernest motioned for silence.

He approached the locked door, turned the key, and pulled it open.

The hallway was empty.

But a white envelope lay on the floor.

It had not been there before.

Ernest picked it up.

No name.

No stamp.

Someone had placed it outside the room while we were talking.

He opened it.

His expression changed.

I took the paper from him.

Two sentences had been typed across the page.

Do not take the girl to B-17.

Samuel made that mistake once.

My skin prickled.

Someone had been inside the mansion.

Someone knew about the storage unit.

And whoever had written the warning knew exactly who I was.

Something else remained in the envelope.

A photograph.

I pulled it out.

It showed Ernest and me leaving the courthouse that afternoon.

The picture had been taken from across the street.

My face was circled in red.

Beneath it, four handwritten words had been added.

She looks like Samuel.

I remembered the photographer outside the courthouse.

He hadn't been waiting for somebody else.

He had been waiting for us.

I looked toward the dark hallway while Ernest locked the door again.

Until that moment, the secrets surrounding my father had belonged to the past.

The photograph proved otherwise.

Someone who remembered Samuel Harrison was watching his daughter now.

And whatever my father had hidden in B-17 thirteen years ago, somebody was willing to enter Ernest Sullivan's house to keep me from finding it.

Click Here to continue read next: PART5: Before Dawn Ernest Told Me Why My Father Feared His Brother, Then Someone Tried to Make Sure We Never Reached Pittsburgh

I turned the photograph over.
