trust transfers controlling interest in Carter Industrial to Marcus’s child upon his death, managed by an independent trustee until adulthood.”

“And Marcus?”

“Receives a smaller fixed inheritance.”

Lena whispered something I could not hear.

I looked at Harris.

“Did Marcus know?”

“Victor says yes.”

The videos.

The disappearing money.

The forged documents.

The cage.

Everything shifted.

“If I left Marcus before the baby was born?”

Harris’s expression stayed neutral.

“I’m not prepared to interpret the trust legally.”

“But Marcus might lose control.”

“Potentially.”

“If something happened to me before the baby was born?”

Harris did not answer.

He did not need to.

Another knock.

This one came softly.

A man stood beyond the glass panel in the door.

Tall.

Gray-haired.

Wearing a suit without a tie.

Victor Carter.

I recognized him immediately.

He looked older than the last time I had seen him.

And afraid.

Harris stepped toward the door.

Victor did not enter.

He simply looked at me through the glass.

Then his gaze moved to my stomach.

His face changed.

Not greed.

Not triumph.

Relief.

He mouthed something.

I could not hear it.

Then he lifted one hand against the glass.

I looked at Harris.

“What did he say?”

Harris had been watching too.

“I think he said, ‘You’re alive.’”

A chill moved through me.

Victor had not arrived because he heard I was hospitalized.

He had come because he had spent weeks uncertain whether his son had already made me disappear permanently.

<a
