panel.

The phone was there.

Dead.

The screen remained black.

I pressed the power button.

Nothing.

Whatever had been sent was all Lena would receive.

If anything.

I held the useless phone against my chest.

For the first time that night, I cried.

Not loudly.

Marcus had trained me out of loud crying.

The tears simply came while I sat with my knees apart because my stomach was too large to draw them together.

I thought about Lena.

She was four years older than me and had spent most of our childhood behaving as if that made her responsible for my survival.

When I was nine and fell from a bicycle, Lena carried me three blocks despite being barely bigger than I was.

When our father died, she slept in my room for two months without ever admitting she was grieving too.

When I married Marcus, she tried to like him.

Later she stopped pretending.

“He watches you when you talk,” she once told me.

“People usually look at each other when they talk.”

“No. He watches you to see story, she would.

If anyone would keep searching, she would.

I wiped my face.

Then I heard something.

A faint electronic sound.

I looked at the dead phone.

Nothing.

The sound came again.

Not inside the cage.

Somewhere beyond the bars.

I leaned forward.

Near the shelving, a small green light blinked.

Once.

Then disappeared.

I had seen it before.

For weeks I assumed it belonged to some piece of old equipment.

Now I watched carefully.

Thirty seconds later, the light blinked again.

A camera.

Marcus had been recording me.

I stood despite the dizziness and approached the bars.

The device was partly hidden behind a cardboard box.

Its lens pointed directly toward the cage.

My stomach turned.

Every moment.

Every time I changed clothes.

Every time I cried.

Every time his mother brought food.

Recorded.

Then another thought arrived.

Evidence.

If Marcus had recorded everything, he had documented his own crime.

Unless he intended to destroy the files.

I stared at the shelves.

The camera cable disappeared behind them.

The same shelves Marcus had forbidden me to approach long before he imprisoned me.

Something was behind that wall.

I reached through the bars.

My fingertips barely touched the nearest box.

I stretched farther.

Pain shot through my abdomen.

I stopped.

Not worth hurting the baby.

I needed another method.

On the floor near the cage lay the rotten apple.

I picked it up.

Then threw it.

It struck the box.

The box shifted half an inch.

Again.

The apple split.

I retrieved the larger piece and threw it again.

The box moved farther.

Behind it, I saw something that did not belong on an ordinary basement wall.

A metal hinge.

The shelving was covering a door.

My pulse quickened.

Marcus was hiding something behind it.

The cage suddenly made less sense.

Why imprison me beside whatever he most wanted concealed?

Unless he believed I could never reach it.

Unless the cage served another purpose.

I sat down and stared at the hidden hinge.

Above me, the house had become quiet.

The guests had apparently left.

Minutes passed.

Then a vehicle started outside.

Headlights briefly crossed the basement window.

I wondered whether the woman from the videos was leaving.

I wondered what she knew.

At the same moment, across town, Lena’s phone vibrated on her nightstand.

I would not learn that until much later.

She woke at 1:43 in the morning.

My message had arrived without the audio attachment.

Marcus locked me in basement. Pregnant. Cage welded shut. Call police.

The location data was incomplete.

It showed only a broad area.

Lena called me immediately.

My real phone, the one Marcus possessed, went straight to voicemail.

She called again.

Then Marcus answered.

“Lena?”

“Where is she?”

A pause.

“Who?”

“My sister.”

“She’s asleep.”

“Put her on.”

“She isn’t here.”

Lena sat upright.

“You just said she was asleep.”

Marcus corrected himself too quickly.

“I meant she’s probably asleep. locked her in a basement.”

Silence.

Marcus hung up.

That was his mistake.

If he had laughed, denied it convincingly, or claimed my account had been hacked, Lena might have lost precious minutes trying to understand.

Instead he disconnected.

She called police.

Then she opened my message again.

The audio attachment still showed pending.

The location contained a partial coordinate.

Not enough to identify a house.

Enough to identify an area.

Lena knew Marcus owned property outside town.

She did not know which property.

But somebody else did.

Victor Carter.

Marcus’s father.

Lena had met him only once.

She called the company’s emergency number, then his office, then every number she could find.

Nobody answered.

She left messages.

At 2:11 a.m., Detective Harris called her.

He asked her to forward everything.

She did.

At 2:19, the audio file finally arrived.

The recording was damaged.

The first minute was almost entirely static.

Then my voice emerged.

I need a doctor.

His mother’s voice answered.

Then mine.

Marcus welded the door.

A pause.

His mother saying something about what was “supposed” to happen.

Detective Harris listened twice.

“Mrs. Lawson,” he told Lena, “we’re treating this as an breaths.

When one came, I counted slowly until the pain released.

Then I waited.

I had no clock.

No way to measure intervals.

The basement window remained dark.

At some point the door opened.

Marcus came downstairs again.

This time he carried a crowbar.

My eyes went immediately to the tool.

He noticed.

“Relax.”

“People carrying crowbars usually don’t say that.”

He descended the final step.

Then he looked toward the touch?”

“Nothing.”

He walked toward the shelves.

The smashed apple lay on the floor.

Marcus looked at it.

Then at me.

“You moved this box.”

“It fell.”

“With an apple?”

He bent and picked up one bruised piece.

My mouth went dry.

Marcus looked toward the the bars.

Marcus watched me bend forward.

For several seconds he said nothing.

Then he looked at the blood on the concrete beneath me.

Not much.

Enough.

His expression changed.

“Is that blood?”

I could not answer until the pain eased.

“Yes.”

He stepped at the blood.

Then at the welded cage.

His own work.

The realization moved visibly across his face.

If something happened to me now, there would be no plausible explanation.

No story about an unstable wife.

No claim that I had locked myself inside.

The welds belonged to him.

And somewhere behind the shelves was whatever secret had frightened him more than my imprisonment becoming known.

Marcus lifted the crowbar.

For one terrible second, I thought he would use it on me.

Instead he turned toward the shelving.

He began moving boxes.

He was going to clear whatever was hidden behind that wall.

Not because I had discovered it.

Because he intended to remove it before anyone else could.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: Marcus Started Emptying the Hidden Room Before
