it.

He lifted the metal.

The old phone lay beneath it.

Cracked screen.

Dead battery.

Small enough to fit in his palm.

Powerful enough to have opened a welded cage.

“That sent the recording?” he asked.

“Yes.”

Marcus lunged so violently that two officers had to restrain him.

“Don’t touch that!”

Harris stood.

His expression changed.

Until that moment, the phone had been evidence of my rescue.

Marcus’s reaction made it evidence of something more.

“Why do you care about this phone?” Harris asked.

Marcus stopped moving.

He had realized his mistake.

Harris placed the device carefully into an evidence bag.

“Did she record something you don’t want us to hear?”

Marcus looked away.

His mother began sobbing.

I was carried toward the stairs.

Halfway there, a phone rang.

Everyone paused.

One officer removed Marcus’s phone from the property bag.

The screen showed a name.

Victor.

Marcus went pale.

Harris took the phone.

He answered.

“Detective Harris.”

Silence.

Then a man’s voice, loud enough for those nearest to hear.

“Where is Marcus?”

Harris looked directly at him.

“You tell me.”

The call ended.

Harris stared at the screen.

Then at Marcus’s mother.

“Victor is your husband?”

She nodded.

“Marcus’s father?”

“Yes.”

“What does he have to do with those documents?”

Her eyes moved toward the hidden room.

“He owns the company.”

“I gathered that.”

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.”

Marcus spoke softly.

“Mother, don’t.”

She looked at her son.

Something in her finally broke.

“He wasn’t keeping her downstairs only because she challenged him.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

Harris waited.

His mother looked at me.

“He was hiding her.”

I felt the paramedic’s hand tighten around mine.

“Hiding her from whom?” Harris asked.

“Victor.”

“Why?”

She looked at the hidden documents.

Then at my stomach.

“Because Victor was looking for her.”

The stretcher began moving again.

“Why was he looking for me?” I asked.

Nobody answered immediately.

Marcus’s mother looked as though she had aged ten years in ten minutes.

“Because of the trust.”

“What trust?”

She opened her mouth.

Marcus shouted over her.

“DON’T.”

The sound echoed through the basement.

The baby shifted painfully inside me.

Another contraction began.

The paramedic ordered everyone aside.

“We’re moving now.”

As they carried me upstairs, I looked back.

Marcus stood handcuffed beside the open cage.

His mother sat beneath the stairs.

Detective Harris stood before the hidden room.

And behind him were shelves of documents bearing names, signatures, accounts, properties—and pieces of a plan I had never known existed.

For weeks Marcus had told me the cage was punishment.

I finally understood that punishment had only been the explanation he wanted me to believe.

The real reason was hidden in those boxes.

Somewhere among them was a document with my forged signature.

Somewhere was the answer to why Marcus needed his pregnant wife to disappear.

And as the paramedics carried me through the front door toward the ambulance, I realized escaping the cage had solved only the first mystery.

Now we had to discover why Marcus had built it around me in the first place.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: At the Hospital, Victor Carter
