21 – The Woman Pretending to Be Me in Chicago Knew Details Only Marcus Had Recorded During My Weeks Inside the Basement Cage

Marianne did not bother sitting down after Harris said a woman in Chicago had appeared on video claiming to be me.

She opened her laptop on Lena’s dining table, called the trustee’s outside counsel, and put the conversation on speaker after warning everyone that nothing discussed should be treated as confidential from law enforcement.

I held Nora against my shoulder and listened to three lawyers speak in careful language about a stranger wearing my identity.

The trustee had received the video at 9:14 that morning.

The woman introduced herself using my full legal name.

She showed a driver’s license.

My driver’s license.

Or a replica convincing enough to survive the first visual check.

She knew my date of birth.

My previous address.

The exact name of the obstetric practice I had used.

She knew the month I married Marcus.

None of that surprised me anymore.

Marcus had kept copies of stress and inadequate nutrition.

That still could have come from hospital information.

Then he added that she described me as “confused by captivity-related trauma.”

Harris looked at me.

“That phrasing matters.”

“Why?”

“Because it presumes knowledge you were knew.

Celeste knew.

Arthur knew by the end.

“What else?” I asked.

The attorney said the woman described panic episodes caused by “metallic again.

The metallic ringing had filled the basement.

Afterward, even the hospital stretcher rail clanging against a doorway made my chest tighten.

I had never told anyone outside that room.

Not Lena.

Not the nurses.

Not Harris.

“Who knew about that?” Harris asked.

“Marcus.”

“Anyone studied me.

My fear.

My mannerisms.

The language used around my confinement.

“Did she appear pregnant?” Lena asked.

Marianne looked at the did she look like?” I asked.

The trustee’s lawyer described a woman in her thirties, dark blond hair, pale skin, similar build to mine.

Not Celeste.

“Can we know.

That detail had always irritated him.

I was born during a snowstorm while my parents were visiting relatives two states away.

The hospital had closed years ago.

Marcus once filled out an insurance form and guessed wrong.

I corrected him.

Apparently he never remembered.

“What did she answer?”

The lawyer named the hospital in my hometown.

Wrong.

Completely wrong.

For the first time, Marcus’s lack of interest in an ordinary piece of my history had protected
