small.

Caleb had been explicit.

Six people.

Pizza.

No speeches unless someone genuinely wanted to speak.

No flowers.

No slideshow.

No inspirational music.

Daniel suggested violating the music rule just to irritate him.

I threatened to remove him from the guest list.

Helen was having a good day.

That mattered most.

The care facility approved a four-hour visit with a nurse available by phone.

She arrived wearing a blue cardigan David had once bought her.

She remembered Caleb was dead.

She also asked twice whether he was upstairs.

Both truths lived in her at once.

I stopped correcting the second question.

Marcus arrived carrying soda.

Emily and Laura came together.

Laura was not technically on Caleb’s six-person list.

I allowed it.

“I pizza.

Caleb would have expected that.

The empty chair for David sat at the far end of the table.

I had almost removed it.

It felt theatrical.

Then Helen saw it.

“That’s David’s chair.”

My throat tightened.

“Yes.”

She smiled.

So it stayed.

We told stories.

Daniel went first.

Caleb at fourteen moving his truck six feet and destroying trash cans.

Marcus told a story about Caleb pretending to understand guitar chords for three months because he was too embarrassed to admit he had forgotten everything after one lesson.

Emily told the vending-machine story.

Not Bellwater.

Not transplant.

The machine ate two dollars.

Caleb kicked it.

A nurse saw him.

He pretended he was stretching.

I laughed until my stomach hurt.

Helen told a story from when Caleb was four.

He believed worms were baby snakes.

He collected seven after rain and put them in David’s work boots.

I had forgotten.

Maybe it happened.

Maybe Helen mixed memories.

It did not matter.

Then my turn.

The picnic cooler.

Marston Ridge.

Exploding sodas.

David chasing sandwiches.

Caleb screaming directions.

When I finished, the room felt warm.

Not sad exactly.

Full.

Then Daniel carried the oncology calendar outside.

I had kept every appointment.

Every scan.

Every infusion.

Every lab.

Colored notes.

Medication calendar burned slowly.

Helen complained about smoke.

Daniel reminded her we were outside.

Then the driveway sensor chimed.

A car had stopped at the curb.

My body tensed immediately.

Old habits.

A man stepped out.

Sixties.

Tall.

Thinner than the photograph I remembered.

Silver
