nodded.

“Notification came up.”

Emily had sent a long voice message after a rough treatment day.

Caleb had been exhausted.

Nauseated.

Angry.

Marcus had driven him home.

“I thought she was making it worse.”

“What did the message say?”

“I listened.”

“That was wrong.”

“Yes.”

“Keep going.”

Emily was crying.

Not asking Caleb to save said, ‘From what? don’t get to decide when my life is full.’”

That sentence hit me.

Because I had done versions of the same thing.

Doctors too.

Family.

Everyone.

Protecting sick people can become reducing their world.

No difficult news.

No responsibility.

No choices.

As though illness turns adulthood off.

“What happened next?”

“Emily got mad at me too.”

“Good.”

Marcus almost smiled.

“She called me a hall monitor with a martyr complex.”

I laughed.

“I like her.”

“She was right.”

“Did Caleb forgive you?”

“Eventually.”

“How?”

“He made me listen to the full message with him.”

That was what the final file probably contained.

Not merely Caleb speaking.

The message itself.

Marcus looked toward me.

“I don’t know if I should hear it again.”

“Caleb wanted you to.”

“Did Emily agree?”

Important.

I had asked her earlier.

Yes.

She gave permission.

I told Marcus.

He nodded.

“Okay.”

We opened FILE 33.

Black screen first.

Then Caleb’s voice.

“Marcus.”

Pause.

“You are probably making the guilty face.”

Marcus muttered:

“I hate him.”

I smiled.

“You deleted Emily’s first long voice message.”

Caleb continued.

“That was bad.”

Marcus nodded.

“Correct.”

“But I forgave you before I died.”

Pause.

“So if you are still punishing yourself, that is now just vanity.”

Marcus stared at the screen.

“What?”

I laughed.

Video-Caleb smiled faintly.

“You are making your guilt the most important thing in the room.”

That silenced both of us.

“You messed up.”

Pause.

“You apologized.”

Another.

“You changed.”

Caleb leaned closer.

“That is the whole available process.”

No self-punishment.

No endless debt.

Another theme.

“You do not prove you loved me by refusing the life insurance.”

Marcus looked away.

“You do not prove you loved me by staying near Mom forever.”

I glanced at him.

He flinched.

Caleb knew.

“You definitely do not prove you loved me by dropping out of school.”

Marcus whispered:

“I wasn’t.”

“You were thinking about it.”

He had been.

I could see it.

Caleb continued.

“Go.”

Pause.

“Finish.”

Another.

“Build boring things that pass inspection.”

Marcus laughed through tears.

“Marry someone if you want.”

Pause.

“Do not name a child after me unless the other parent likes the name.”

Very sensible.

“And if Mom starts treating you like replacement son—”

I gasped.

“I do not.”

Marcus laughed harder.

“—run.”

“Caleb!”

He smiled.

“She means well.”

Marcus wiped his eyes.

Then Caleb’s face changed.

“This next part is Emily’s message.”

Pause.

“She said you can hear it now.”

The screen went black.

Emily’s voice.

Younger.

Tired.

“Hey.”

She breathed shakily.

“I know you’re at treatment and you don’t have to answer.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I’m just scared today.”

Pause.

“They said my pressures are worse.”

Another.

“Mom keeps saying we’re still okay.”

A small laugh.

“I think parents have a law where they have to say that.”

My chest tightened.

Emily continued.

“I don’t need you to fix anything.”

That line mattered.

“I just need one person who knows what it is like when everybody else is hopeful at you.”

Hopeful at you.

I understood.

Not with.

At.

A demand.

“You can tell me to shut up if you’re tired.”

Pause.

“I hope your treatment is less terrible today.”

Another.

“And if we both live long enough to meet, I’m buying coffee.”

She laughed faintly.

“You owe me because you made fun of my hospital socks.”

The message ended.

Marcus cried quietly.

“That’s what I deleted.”

“Yes.”

“She wasn’t asking him for anything.”

“No.”

“I made it into something dangerous because I knew she needed a heart.”

“Yes.”

Marcus looked at me.

“I thought if Caleb heard how bad she was doing, he’d start thinking about donation.”

“That is understandable.”

“It was still wrong.”

“Yes.”

Both.

Again.

“Did he?”

“Think about donation?”

“Yes.”

“Eventually.”

“Because of that message?”

“No.”

“Then you protected him from something that wasn’t even happening.”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Exactly.”

The video returned.

Caleb said:

“If you’re wondering, Marcus, her message did not make me decide anything about my organs.”

Pause.

“I was already registered.”

Good.

“Later, when directed donation became medically possible, that was separate.”

He had protected the distinction repeatedly.

Then:

“You were afraid my love for someone would become another way I could hurt myself.”

Marcus looked at the floor.

“You were wrong.”

Pause.

“But I know why.”

Caleb smiled.

“Just don’t do that to the next person you love.”

There.

Not punishment.

Practice.

The file ended.

Marcus sat still.

Then:

“He was annoying.”

“Yes.”

“Very.”

“Yes.”

“I miss him.”

“Yes.”

We stayed at the table.

Eventually he told me school was going well.

He liked electrical systems.

Hated one instructor.

Had made two friends.

One of them apparently never stopped talking.

Normal.

Good.

“Are you staying tonight?”

“No.”

I felt a flash of disappointment.

Then caught myself.

Replacement son.

Run.

“Good.”

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You look weird.”

“I am respecting boundaries.”

“That is concerning.”

I laughed.

He stood.

Before leaving, he hugged me.

Then:

“Claire.”

“Yes?”

“If I ever think you’re turning grief into a job again, am I supposed to say something?”

I sighed.

“Apparently.”

“Great.”

“Do not enjoy this.”

He grinned.

Caleb had weaponized community accountability.

After Marcus left, Lantern unlocked FILE 34.

Caleb appeared.

“Mom.”

He smiled.

“If Marcus stayed for dinner, kick him out.”

I laughed.

“He needs to go build his own life.”

Pause.

“Also, please stop pretending you don’t like having him around.”

I rolled my eyes.

Then Caleb grew serious.

“Next two files are for Emily.”

My chest tightened.

“You are not required to be there when she watches.”

Good.

“Actually, first one should be private.”

I nodded.

“Second one she can share if she wants.”

Pause.

“Please let her choose.”

That was the lesson repeated cleanly.

Let her choose.

Then:

“The first unlocks when her transplant team clears her to walk outside alone.”

I exhaled.

A future milestone.

Not evidence.

Recovery.

“The second unlocks when she does something that has nothing to do with me.”

I frowned.

“How does Lantern know that?”

Caleb smiled.

“Margaret will.”

Of course.

He had delegated.

Then:

“After those, Mom, only two files.”

My throat tightened.

“Yours.”

Pause.

“And neither is a clue.”

Good.

“Mostly.”

I glared at the screen.

Caleb laughed.

“Kidding.”

The video ended.

Weeks passed.

That surprised me.

Not narratively.

Actually.

No crisis.

No threatening call.

No old man arriving with evidence.

Legal proceedings continued in background noise.

Emails from Holt.

News updates.

Administrative hearings.

Victim notifications.

But life regained stretches longer than one emergency.

I started part-time at the college.

Three mornings a week.

Janine pretended not to be pleased.

The printer remained terrible.

I helped a nineteen-year-old transfer student fix a registration error that threatened her financial aid.

She cried.

Then hugged me.

An ordinary
