preserve it forever.”

My eyes filled.

“You will think leaving means leaving us.”

Yes.

“It doesn’t.”

His voice softened.

“You already carry too much of us.”

I cried.

“Take what you want.”

Pause.

“Pictures.”

Another.

“Dad’s stupid mug.”

It was not David’s mug.

“Keep the mug you hate.”

Caleb’s tolerable son mug.

“Keep one paper airplane.”

Pause.

“Keep whatever makes you smile.”

Then:

“But do not keep eleven rooms because two dead people used to stand in them.”

I covered my mouth.

He had thought about this.

My future housing.

My future life.

A world without the architecture of grief.

“I want you somewhere smaller.”

Pause.

“Near people.”

Another.

“With bad parking.”

I laughed.

“Something you complain about.”

That sounded plausible.

“And please stop mowing the back slope.”

I laughed harder.

He had hated watching me do that.

Then his face turned serious.

“Not yet.”

Pause.

“Whenever you’re ready.”

Another.

“If never, okay.”

That surprised me.

He was not commanding.

“Just promise you’ll ask whether staying is love or fear.”

The screen went dark.

I sat in the kitchen.

The refrigerator hummed.

The hallway dent remained.

Caleb’s shoes by the door.

David’s photographs.

The house did not feel like a prison.

Not tonight.

But maybe someday it could become one.

I did not decide.

That was new too.

I allowed a question to remain a question.

Then I noticed the unlock condition for the final file.

FILE 39.

Condition:

CLAIRE MAKES ONE PLAN FOR HERSELF THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE DAVID, CALEB, BELLWATER, OR ANYONE THEY ASKED HER TO HELP.

I laughed.

“Impossible.”

Then stared at the condition.

One plan.

Mine.

Not work.

Not memorial.

Not Emily.

Not Daniel.

Not Helen.

Not evidence.

What did I want?

The question felt almost offensive.

I had no answer.

For the first time in decades, the next part of my life required desire instead of duty.

<a
