up.”

There it was.

Friendship.

Mia changed the sleepover.

No overnight bags in the living room.

Parents dropped off essentials in a basket by the laundry entrance.

Kaylee chose not to go near it.

Nobody announced why.

The party was chaotic.

Popcorn in the rug.

Frosting on a pillow.

One girl cried because another called her singing annoying.

By midnight, three were asleep.

Mia and Kaylee were not.

I walked past the living room and heard them whispering.

“Do you miss Tasha?” Mia asked.

I almost stopped.

Then kept walking slowly.

Kaylee answered after a long pause.

“Some things.”

“Like what?”

“She made good pancakes.”

Mia considered this.

“My mom’s are bad.”

I turned in the hallway.

Excuse me?

But I stayed quiet.

Kaylee continued.

“And she knew how to braid my hair.”

“Your dad can’t.”

“No.”

“Mrs. Harper?”

“Bad.”

I nearly objected from around the corner.

Then Kaylee said, “I don’t miss being scared.”

Mia replied, “That makes sense.”

No therapy language.

No adult framing.

Just a friend.

Later that night, Kaylee came into my room.

“I said I miss stuff.”

“I heard a little.”

She frowned.

“You listened?”

“Accidentally.”

“Is that bad?”

“Missing parts of someone who hurt you?”

She nodded.

“No.”

“Dad says he misses who he thought she was.”

“Yes.”

“I miss pancakes.”

“That seems easier.”

She smiled.

“Way easier.”

Then she went back to the sleepover.

That conversation mattered when Tasha’s attorney later proposed a plea negotiation.

The prosecutor explained the broad possibility to Greg and Kaylee’s guardian ad litem.

Nothing final.

Nothing Kaylee needed to decide.

But the existence of negotiations meant the case might not go to trial.

Greg struggled with that.

“She should have to hear everything.”

Karen looked at him.

“Who benefits from that?”

“Truth.”

“Truth can exist without a jury verdict.”

“She needs consequences.”

“Yes.”

“Then trial.”

“Not always.”

Greg looked angry.

“What about Kaylee?”

“Exactly.”

A trial could require more preparation.

More exposure.

Potential testimony, though prosecutors would try to minimize it.

More months of uncertainty.

A plea could establish guilt and consequences sooner.

No option was emotionally clean.

When Kaylee was eventually told only that adults were discussing whether the case could end without a full trial, she asked:

“Would I have to talk in court?”

“Maybe not,” Dana said.

“If there’s a deal?”

“Probably not.”

“Would Tasha say she did it?”

“That depends on the agreement.”

Kaylee thought.

“I want her to say it.”

Greg looked at her.

“What?”

“I want her to say she did it.”

Dana asked gently, “Why?”

“So everybody stops saying maybe.”

That sentence stayed in the room.

Maybe the marks.

Maybe the standing.

Maybe the food.

Maybe the records.

Maybe the lies.

Kaylee was tired of ambiguity adults required for fairness.

She wanted acknowledgment.

The prosecutor could not promise that.

Tasha’s attorney initially proposed a plea with no admission of intentional physical injury.

Prosecutors rejected it.

Negotiations continued.

Meanwhile, Greg’s unsupervised visits expanded.

Half-day.

Then evening.

At the end of one evening visit, Kaylee fell asleep on the couch.

Greg called me.

“Do I wake her?”

I almost laughed.

“What do you think?”

“I don’t know.”

“You’re her dad.”

Silence.

Then:

“I want to let her sleep.”

“So let her sleep.”

“But she’s supposed to come back.”

There it was.

The rule.

The schedule.

The fear of taking control.

I called Dana.

She approved an extra hour.

Kaylee woke at nine.

Saw Greg.

Saw the room.

Panicked for three seconds.

Then remembered where she was.

Greg did not touch her.

“Want Laura?”

Kaylee nodded.

He called me immediately.

I drove over.

By the time I arrived, Kaylee was calm.

She looked embarrassed.

“I forgot.”

“You were asleep.”

“I thought…”

She stopped.

“You don’t have to finish.”

“I thought Tasha was there.”

Greg looked away.

Kaylee saw.

“Don’t.”

He looked back.

“What?”

“Do the sad face.”

He almost smiled.

“Working on it.”

She put on her shoes.

At the door, she stopped.

Then turned.

“Next time I can stay later.”

Greg blinked.

“Okay.”

That was how the first overnight became possible.

Not because a judge ordered it.

Not because Greg completed a checklist.

Because after waking frightened, Kaylee still wanted to try again.

Three days later, prosecutors contacted Tasha’s attorney with a revised plea framework.

Multiple felony admissions.

No-contact protections.

Restitution.

Surrender of any claim to household property beyond divorce rights.

Cooperation regarding deleted evidence.

And one requirement prosecutors believed mattered to Kaylee.

A factual allocution.

Tasha would have to state in court what she had done.

Not every detail.

Enough.

When Karen told Greg, he asked:

“Will she accept?”

No one knew.

Then Tasha sent word through counsel.

She would consider it.

But only if one person agreed to meet with her first.

Greg assumed she meant him.

She did not.

She asked to see Kaylee.

Dana’s answer was immediate.

No.

<a
