8 – Rebecca Flew to Belize With the Ledger’s Missing Page, and Her Message Forced Me to Question Who Had Really Been Hunting Whom

Rebecca landed in Belize before investigators could reach her.

That fact alone did not make her guilty.

Bell reminded me of that repeatedly.

People traveled.

People panicked.

People inherited money without knowing where it came from.

But Rebecca had omitted the trust.

And omission mattered.

Especially now.

Denver detectives searched her apartment under warrant.

They found almost nothing suspicious.

Clothes.

Books.

Work documents.

A half-dead basil plant on the kitchen windowsill.

The ordinary remains of somebody who appeared to have left quickly.

Then they opened a locked desk drawer.

Inside was a photocopy of Thomas’s ledger.

One page had been removed.

The original ledger from the storage unit was missing that same page.

Page seventy-three.

“What was before it?”

Bell turned to the scan.

Page seventy-two documented Nolan’s meeting with Thomas after Dad died.

Thomas wrote that Nolan wanted access to Arthur’s business passwords.

Page seventy-four described a transfer involving Vanessa.

Whatever had been on seventy-three connected those events.

Or interrupted them.

“Rebecca took it?”

“Possibly.”

“Why?”

“We need to ask her.”

“When she comes back?”

Bell said nothing.

Nobody knew if Rebecca planned to return.

Belizean authorities had been contacted, but she had entered legally.

There was no arrest warrant.

Not yet.

Elaine and I spent the morning meeting with the independent fiduciary now controlling Dad’s trust.

Her name was Miriam Holt.

She was sixty-one, silver-haired, direct and utterly unimpressed by everyone.

I liked her immediately.

She arrived with three binders and refused coffee because, she said, caffeine made bad numbers look worse.

Miriam explained the warehouse businesses.

Income.

Expenses.

Tenants.

Maintenance.

Taxes.

For the first time, someone spoke to me without assuming I was stupid.

When I didn’t understand something, she explained it differently.

Not louder.

Not more slowly.

Just differently.

By lunch, I understood more about Dad’s estate than Nolan had ever allowed me to know.

The warehouses were profitable.

Not effortlessly.

But reliably.

Dad’s reserve structure had been conservative.

The properties could support themselves.

The financial crisis had not come from operating costs.

It had been manufactured by theft.

“Can they recover?” I asked.

Miriam closed one binder.

“Yes.”

That single word loosened something inside me.

“How long?”

“Years, probably.”

“Will I need to sell?”

“Not unless you decide to.”

Decision.

Not obligation.

Not instruction.

Decision.

I nearly cried over the word.

Miriam reviewed distributions I should have received after Dad died.

Even after legitimate taxes and expenses, I had been entitled to regular income.

Nolan intercepted most of it through false management arrangements.

Hearthstone billed the warehouses for consulting.

Then maintenance.

Then compliance work.

None of those services were real.

One invoice charged eleven thousand dollars for roof inspections.

Miriam produced photographs.

The roofs hadn’t been inspected.

Another charged twenty-two thousand for security-system installation.

No systems existed.

Then she found something different.

A legitimate payment.

Forty-eight thousand dollars.

Authorized by Dad.

Recipient:

Rebecca Vance Education Trust.

Date:

Two months before his death.

I looked up.

“Dad gave Rebecca money?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The memo read:

Graduate nursing tuition.

Thomas’s daughter had received help from my father.

Even after Thomas blackmailed him.

Maybe Dad was still trying to repay the debt he believed he owed.

Maybe he saw Rebecca as innocent.

She had been a child when her mother died.

A child like me.

Two daughters shaped by one crash.

One raised without a mother.

The other raised without the truth.

Bell called just after two.

Rebecca had contacted him.

Not directly.

She sent an encrypted email.

The subject line:

FOR CLAIRE ONLY.

Bell forwarded it.

Claire,

My father lied to everyone, including me.

Before he died, he told me Nolan would eventually come for the ledger.

He also told me Nolan was not the first person who tried to use your mother’s crash.

You need page 73.

I have it.

I went to Belize because my father kept an account here under Ruth’s name. I did not know about the $240,000 until after he died. Nolan sent it because Dad had something Nolan needed.

Do not assume the transfer was payment to us.

It was ransom.

My father took something from Nolan.

Something worse than the ledger.

I read the last lines twice.

If Bell arrests me before I retrieve it, the evidence disappears.

If Nolan’s people find me first, so do I.

I will contact you again.

Do not trust Vanessa.

I looked at Bell.

“Can Nolan still have people working for him?”

“Possibly.”

“He’s in jail.”

“That doesn’t erase relationships.”

“What did Thomas take?”

“We don’t know.”

“Vanessa might.”

Bell questioned her again.

Vanessa reacted badly when shown Rebecca’s email.

She called Rebecca a liar.

Then a thief.

Then she demanded a lawyer.

Bell pressed.

“What did Thomas take from Nolan?”

Vanessa stared at the table.

“Nothing.”

“What was worth two hundred forty thousand dollars?”

“No idea.”

“Why is Rebecca in Belize?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why did Nolan plan to go there?”

No answer.

Bell placed a photograph of the Belize transfer on the table.

Vanessa’s hand began trembling.

That was visible even through the interview-room camera.

“What’s in Belize?” Bell asked.

She whispered something.

Bell leaned closer.

“What?”

“Copies.”

“Copies of what?”

Vanessa looked at the mirror.

Maybe she knew I was watching.

“Everything.”

The word chilled me.

Bell waited.

Vanessa finally explained.

For years, Nolan had kept what he called an insurance file.

Not financial insurance.

Leverage.

Documents on everyone involved.

Thomas.

Raymond.

Dad.

Vanessa.

Business partners.

Bankers.

People who forged signatures.

People who accepted money.

People who looked away.

He believed loyalty was temporary.

Blackmail was permanent.

Thomas discovered the archive.

He stole part of it.

Then used it to protect himself.

“Where did he keep it?”

Vanessa said she didn’t know.

But Nolan believed Thomas moved it offshore.

When Thomas died, Nolan searched his home and office.

Nothing.

Then money appeared in Rebecca’s trust.

Two hundred forty thousand.

“Why send money to the daughter of a man you think stole from you?”

Vanessa looked exhausted.

“To buy it back.”

“Did Rebecca agree?”

“No.”

“Did she know?”

“I don’t think so.”

“What happened after the transfer?”

“Thomas contacted Nolan.”

“And?”

“He wanted more.”

“How much?”

“One million.”

Bell sat back.

Thomas had tried to sell Nolan his own blackmail archive.

“What was in it that scared Nolan?”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“Ask him.”

Bell did.

Nolan refused to speak.

But financial records provided a clue.

One week after the $240,000 transfer, Nolan applied for an emergency loan against one of Dad’s warehouses.

He needed more cash.

The loan was rejected because documents conflicted.

Six days later, Thomas Vance died.

Then Nolan stopped trying to recover the missing archive.

Maybe because he believed Thomas had taken its location to the grave.

Until Rebecca vanished.

Another email arrived that evening.

This time directly to my new address.

Nobody except investigators and Elaine knew it.

Rebecca somehow did.

There was no greeting.

Only a photograph.

A yellowed page numbered 73.

Thomas’s handwriting filled it.

March 14.

Met N.C. after Arthur funeral.

He wants original trust amendment.

Told him Arthur gave copy to E.M.

N.C. says Elaine doesn’t have complete version.

Says Claire can be controlled through debt.

Plan is to make her believe estate costs more than she earns.

If she stays financially weak, she won’t hire counsel.

My stomach twisted.

There it was.

The entire marriage strategy.

Not accidental.

Not a philosophical obsession with fairness.

A plan.

Make me poor enough that I could never independently examine my inheritance.

Keep me ashamed.

Keep me borrowing.

Keep me grateful.

Keep me dependent while pretending independence was his highest value.

But Thomas had written more.

N.C. says R.H. will cooperate because of Ruth.

V.R. preparing entity.

Need new management account before Claire marriage.

That confirmed Vanessa had been involved before Nolan married me.

Then came the final lines.

Arthur hid second archive.

N.C. doesn’t know where.

Says if Claire ever learns what Arthur recorded about the night Ruth died, everything fails.

I stopped breathing.

“The night my mother died?”

Bell read over my shoulder.

“Apparently there’s another recording.”

I stared at the page.

We already knew about the crash.

My mother had been drunk.

She drove.

Thomas’s wife died.

Raymond survived.

What else could Dad have recorded?

Rebecca’s email continued.

My father found this page after Nolan killed Arthur.

He believed the “second archive” was not financial.

He thought Arthur had evidence proving the crash did not happen the way the official sealed report said.

I came to Belize because Dad left coordinates in his papers.

I found the deposit box.

It was empty.

Someone got here before me.

I felt dread settle in my chest.

Who?

Rebecca answered that too.

The bank logged access four months ago.

Authorized visitor:

Vanessa Reed.

I looked through the observation window at Vanessa.

She had spent days claiming not to know what Thomas took.

Not to know what was in Belize.

Not to know why Nolan wanted the archive.

She had lied every time.

Bell reentered the interview room.

He placed Rebecca’s message in front of her.

Vanessa read it.

Her face drained.

“Where is it?” Bell asked.

“I don’t have it.”

“You accessed the box.”

“I found it empty.”

“That’s not what Rebecca says.”

“Rebecca wasn’t there.”

“So who took it?”

Vanessa looked toward the mirror again.

Then she said my name.

Not to Bell.

To me.

“Claire needs to hear this.”

Bell hesitated.

I entered the room.

Elaine tried to stop me.

I went anyway.

Vanessa stared at me across the table.

Her bruised cheek had faded yellow.

“You want the truth about your mother?”

“Yes.”

“Nolan doesn’t have that recording.”

“Who does?”

“Raymond.”

I went Belize?”

“He got there the day before me.”

“Why?”

“To destroy whatever Arthur left.”

My throat tightened.

“Did he?”

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he called Nolan afterward.”

Bell leaned forward.

“From where?”

“Airport.”

“What did he say?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“He said Arthur had lied to all of them.”

“About what?”

She hesitated.

“Your mother wasn’t driving.”

I stared at her.

“That’s impossible.”

“Raymond was.”

The room went silent.

Vanessa continued.

“Your father switched the story to protect his brother.”

“No.”

“Ruth was drunk, yes. But she was in the passenger seat.”

I felt sick.

“Why would Dad blame my dead mother?”

“Because she died in the crash and Raymond survived.”

Bell asked how Nolan knew.

Vanessa said the hidden archive contained photographs, original witness statements and an audio confession Raymond gave Dad years later.

Dad had preserved it.

Not to punish Raymond.

To make sure the truth could eventually be restored.

Thomas discovered enough to believe Ruth caused his wife’s death.

He spent decades hating the wrong person.

My father paid blackmail to protect his brother.

Nolan used the lie to control them both.

And Raymond, terrified the truth would destroy him, kept signing whatever Nolan demanded.

I thought of Raymond at the cottage.

I choose cowardice.

He had meant more than the fraud.

“Where is Raymond now?” I asked.

Bell reached for his phone.

Raymond had been released pending further investigation because prosecutors had not yet charged him.

He was supposed to remain at home.

Officers drove to the property.

The main house was empty.

The barn was open.

Raymond’s truck was gone.

So was his passport.

On the kitchen table, investigators found one envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Inside was a short note.

Claire,

Your father protected me when he should not have.

Then I spent the rest of his life letting that lie poison everything it touched.

Nolan knew what I had done.

Thomas believed your mother did it.

Arthur carried both burdens.

You carried consequences without knowing why.

I have the recording.

I should have given it to you years ago.

I was afraid of prison.

Now I am more afraid you will never know your mother was innocent of the thing we blamed on her.

I’m going to finish what Arthur could not.

Do not follow me.

There was no destination.

No explanation.

Only one additional line.

Nolan still has one person outside who will kill for him.

And that person already knows Rebecca is in Belize.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Raymond’s Warning Sent Police Racing Toward Belize, While a Hidden Call Revealed Nolan’s Last Loyal Accomplice Was Already There

Rebecca landed in Belize before investigators could reach her.
