alone.

Again, protection had become secrecy.

Again, secrecy created room for Nolan.

A later clip showed Raymond meeting Nolan in a parking garage.

Raymond looked furious.

“You said nobody gets hurt.”

Nolan replied, “Nobody has.”

“Arthur knows.”

“He suspects.”

“He clear.

So was Nolan’s contempt for him.

The next folder was dated three days before Dad died.

Caleb stood inside a veterinarian supply warehouse.

He spoke to a man whose face never appeared clearly.

A small insulated package changed hands.

The timestamp matched the period when the pharmaceutical vial later found in Hearthstone storage would have been accessible.

Bell leaned forward.

“Play it again.”

The unknown man said, “This isn’t something you fool around with.”

Caleb said animal use.”

“That’s what I said.”

The video ended.

Bell immediately began identifying the warehouse and supplier.

But that still did not prove Dad received the compound.

Then they opened the next clip.

The night Dad died.

Timestamp:

7:28 p.m.

Caleb’s body camera showed Nolan driving.

Caleb sat beside him.

I could see the dashboard.

The clock.

7:31.

My restaurant reservation had been at seven.

Nolan had told me he needed to take a work call.

Instead, he had left with Caleb.

At 7:43, they parked two streets from Dad’s house.

Nolan got out carrying a small leather case.

Caleb remained behind.

“Ten minutes,” Caleb said.

Nolan answered, “Twenty.”

“What if he calls police?”

“He won’t get the chance.”

The words made my stomach tighten so hard I nearly doubled over.

Elaine asked whether I wanted to leave.

“No.”

I had spent six years not knowing.

I would not look away now.

The body-camera video continued.

Caleb waited.

At 7:57, he got out and walked toward Dad’s property.

Why?

Nobody knew.

The camera showed him entering through the side gate.

Dad’s voice was faint from inside.

Angry.

Then Nolan.

Then movement.

Caleb stopped near a window.

Through a gap in the curtains, the camera captured fragments.

Dad standing near the kitchen counter.

Nolan across from him.

A glass between them.

The angle was poor.

But Nolan opened the leather case.

He removed something small.

Dad turned away.

Nolan’s hand moved over the glass.

I stopped breathing.

Bell paused the frame.

There it was.

Not perfect.

Not cinematic.

But visible.

A small vial.

Nolan poured something into Dad’s drink.

Elaine closed her eyes.

I couldn’t.

The recording resumed.

Caleb whispered, “Jesus Christ.”

He had not known.

That mattered.

At least then.

Caleb backed away from the window.

He returned toward the vehicle.

Then he stopped.

Inside the house, Dad shouted.

Caleb turned back.

He heard the struggle.

He heard Dad demand to know what Nolan had put in his drink.

The same words preserved on Dad’s phone.

Caleb stood outside.

He did nothing.

For six minutes, my father begged for help.

Caleb did nothing.

Then Nolan emerged.

His face looked pale.

He carried the leather case and a stack of papers.

Caleb stared at him.

“What did you do?”

“Drive.”

“What did you give him?”

“Drive.”

“Is he dead?”

“Not yet.”

My hands began opened the passenger door.

“Drive.”

The camera shifted violently as Caleb removed it.

The recording cut.

Bell stopped playback.

Nobody spoke.

There was no longer meaningful ambiguity about Dad’s final minutes.

Nolan had carried the substance.

Nolan had put it into Dad’s drink.

Nolan had left knowing Dad was alive and needed help.

Caleb had witnessed enough to understand.

And he chose silence.

Bell contacted the prosecutor.

Charges would change.

Evidence had changed everything.

But Blue Heron contained more.

The next folder was Thomas.

Dated eleven months earlier.

One day before his crash.

Caleb met Thomas in a parking lot.

Thomas held a package.

“You tell Nolan this is done.”

Caleb said, “Give me the drive.”

“No.”

“He paid.”

“He paid a fraction.”

“You’re blackmailing the wrong man.”

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“So did he.”

Caleb stepped closer.

Thomas said, “If anything happens to me, Rebecca gets everything.”

That explained the trust payment.

The two hundred forty thousand had not merely been ransom.

It had been the first installment.

Nolan was buying back evidence.

Thomas was keeping copies.

The next video timestamp was the morning Thomas died.

Caleb followed his car.

Not subtle surveillance.

Close.

Aggressive.

Thomas accelerated.

Caleb followed.

The body camera showed his hands on the steering wheel.

His phone rang through the vehicle speakers.

Nolan.

“Don’t let him reach the meeting.”

Caleb asked, “What do you want me to do?”

“Stop him.”

“How?”

A pause.

“Use judgment.”

Caleb swore.

“Nolan.”

“Do what I pay you to do.”

The video continued.

Caleb pulled alongside Thomas on a two-lane highway.

Thomas looked over.

Caleb accelerated.

Moved closer.

Thomas swerved.

Recovered.

Caleb did it again.

The second time, Thomas’s car left the road.

Rolled.

Dust filled the camera.

Caleb stopped.

For several seconds, he sat breathing heavily.

Then he got out.

Walked toward the wreck.

Thomas was alive.

I could hear him groaning.

Caleb stood beside the shattered window.

Thomas whispered, “Help me.”

Caleb looked down the road.

Then back at him.

He reached inside.

At first I thought he was helping.

Instead, he took Thomas’s phone.

Then a key.

Then the leather folder from the passenger seat.

He walked away.

Thomas died before emergency services arrived.

Bell stopped the video.

“Caleb killed him.”

Not directly with a weapon.

But yes.

He forced the car off the road.

Then withheld help.

Just as he had with Dad.

Nolan had trained the people around him to interpret silence as survival.

Bell’s phone rang.

Belize.

Everyone watched his face.

He listened.

Asked two questions.

Then stood.

“They found the boat.”

My heart hammered.

“Rebecca?”

“No one aboard.”

The boat had struck a sandbar roughly six miles from the coastal house.

Blood was found inside.

So was Caleb’s silver ring.

No bodies.

One firearm.

Magazine partly empty.

There had been shots.

Then another message came through.

A tourist boat nearby had reported hearing gunfire approximately thirty minutes earlier.

They had also seen someone swimming toward a tiny mangrove island.

One person.

Maybe two.

Search teams changed direction.

Bell looked at me.

“This is not over.”

I nodded.

Then the forensic technician interrupted.

There was another Blue Heron file from the night Dad died.

After Nolan returned to the restaurant.

The video came from a hidden camera in Nolan’s office.

At 10:14 p.m., Nolan met someone.

Not Caleb.

Not Vanessa.

Not Raymond.

Marianne Cole.

His office administrator.

She walked in carrying a plastic bag.

Inside was Dad’s missing medication.

Nolan told her to dispose of it.

She asked, “Did he suffer?”

Nolan replied, “Not for long.”

Marianne looked sick.

Then she said something that explained why Nolan had trusted her for years.

“You promised after Arthur this would stop.”

After Arthur.

Not before.

She already knew what he had done.

Nolan stepped closer.

“You wanted him gone as much as I did.”

Marianne shook her head.

“No. I wanted him scared.”

“You wanted your money.”

“He owed me.”

My pulse sharpened.

“Who is she?” I whispered.

Bell began searching.

Marianne Cole had worked for Nolan for seven years.

Before that, her employment record was strangely thin.

Maiden name:

Marianne Vance.

Thomas Vance’s younger sister.

The aunt of Rebecca.

The sister of the man Nolan later killed.

The sister-in-law of the woman Raymond’s crash had killed.

Marianne had not entered Nolan’s life as an innocent office administrator.

She had been inside the entire history.

And if she had accessed Nolan’s emergency phone after his arrest, she might be the person Raymond meant.

The one still outside.

The one who would kill for him.

Or perhaps, after Thomas’s death, the one who had stopped working for Nolan and begun working against him.

Bell looked at the Blue Heron screen.

Then at the search map in Belize.

Marianne’s passport had not been used.

But one false identity from Nolan’s records matched a woman who had flown to Belize that morning.

Name:

Maria Coles.

I stared at the photograph.

Marianne.

She was already there.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Marianne Found Rebecca Before Police Did, but Her Reason for
