Consulting searched.

The problem was Belize contained layers of shell-company rentals.

One address surfaced repeatedly.

A small villa near Orange Walk.

Leaseholder:

Blue Heron Holdings.

Of course.

Police moved.

We watched through updates.

At 8:02, vehicles reached the property.

Lights off.

Perimeter established.

At 8:11, officers entered.

No shots.

No resistance.

Then Bell received confirmation.

Rebecca was inside.

Alive.

So was Marianne.

I closed my eyes.

For the first time in hours, I could breathe.

Rebecca had cuts, dehydration and bruising, but no life-threatening injuries.

Marianne had treated Caleb’s attack wound on Rebecca’s shoulder after pulling her from the water.

That detail changed everything.

Rebecca later explained what happened.

Caleb caught her near the coastal house.

He forced her onto the boat.

He wanted Thomas’s missing copy of Blue Heron.

Rebecca told him she didn’t have it.

He didn’t believe her.

When they reached open water, she grabbed the gun from the seat.

They fought.

The weapon fired.

Caleb was hit.

The boat struck the sandbar.

Rebecca jumped overboard.

Caleb followed.

She swam toward the mangrove island.

Then heard another engine.

Marianne.

Rebecca thought she was about to die.

Instead Marianne pulled her aboard.

“Why?” Bell asked Marianne after her arrest.

Her answer was simple.

“Because Thomas was my brother.”

That didn’t erase anything.

Marianne had helped Nolan after Dad died.

She had disposed of evidence.

She had enabled fraud.

But Thomas’s death had apparently changed her loyalty.

According to Marianne, Nolan promised the scheme would stop after Dad’s death.

Instead it expanded.

He took more.

Forged more.

Threatened more.

When Thomas began preserving evidence, Marianne secretly helped him.

She accessed Nolan’s systems.

Copied files.

Kept track of shell companies.

After Thomas died, she became convinced Nolan had ordered it.

She stayed inside Nolan’s office to gather proof.

“Why not go to police?” Bell asked.

“Because I was already guilty.”

Another familiar answer.

Fear of consequences.

Cowardice disguised as waiting.

Marianne admitted accessing Nolan’s emergency phone after his arrest.

She saw Caleb’s messages.

One referenced Rebecca’s flight.

Another referenced a recovery operation in Belize.

Marianne knew what that meant.

So she followed.

But she was not there solely to rescue Rebecca.

She wanted something too.

“The final archive.”

Blue Heron was not the only copy.

Thomas had hidden another.

The version police recovered from Nolan’s storage belonged to Nolan.

Thomas had copied selected files before his death.

Then he added material Nolan never possessed.

Recordings of Thomas.

Evidence against Marianne.

Proof involving the 1998 crash.

And, according to Marianne, a video Dad himself recorded shortly before he died.

“That’s what Raymond took?” I asked.

“No.”

Marianne shook her head through the video interview.

“Raymond has the confession about the crash.”

“What does Thomas’s archive have?”

“Arthur talking about you.”

My throat tightened.

“What about me?”

“He knew Nolan was manipulating you.”

“How?”

“Arthur watched him.”

I felt a sharp, painful laugh rise.

“Apparently everybody watched everybody except me.”

Marianne looked down.

“Arthur wanted to tell you.”

“But?”

“He was afraid you’d choose Nolan.”

That hurt because it was probably true.

At that point in my life, I would have.

I loved Nolan.

Or I loved the version of him he constructed for me.

Dad knew challenging that directly could drive me closer to him.

So he gathered proof.

Planned a conversation.

Prepared the trust.

And died before he could begin.

Marianne said Thomas’s copy of the final archive had been placed in a private vault in Belize.

That was why Rebecca came.

That was why Caleb followed.

And why Marianne followed Caleb.

The vault Rebecca found had been empty because Marianne had already removed the drive.

I stared at her.

“You had it?”

“Yes.”

“Where is it now?”

Marianne hesitated.

Bell leaned forward.

“Where?”

“I gave it to Raymond.”

My heart lurched.

“When?”

“Four months ago.”

The timing matched Vanessa’s story.

Raymond had gone to Belize.

Vanessa arrived later.

Marianne had met Raymond secretly.

She gave him the archive because Thomas had written that if anything happened to him, Raymond could authenticate the crash evidence.

That did not make Raymond trustworthy.

It made him central.

“Why would Thomas trust Raymond?” I asked.

“He didn’t.”

Marianne’s expression turned bitter.

“He trusted Raymond’s guilt.”

I understood.

Raymond wanted the truth buried.

But guilt could also force him eventually to confess.

Thomas had gambled on that.

Marianne told us Raymond took the drive and returned to Texas.

He later contacted her once.

“He said he watched Arthur’s recording.”

“What did Dad say?”

“He wouldn’t tell me.”

“Where is the drive?”

“Raymond has it.”

Raymond had vanished.

So the most important remaining evidence was with a frightened man who had lied for nearly three decades.

Bell requested warrants tied to every account, vehicle and property Raymond controlled.

Then his team found something.

Raymond’s truck had been abandoned at a private airfield.

A small charter aircraft departed two hours later.

Destination:

New Mexico.

Raymond had not left the country.

He went west.

Martin Delgado lived in New Mexico.

Bell called him immediately.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Local deputies drove to Martin’s home.

Empty.

His truck was gone.

No sign of forced entry.

Then Bell remembered Dad’s note.

The real ledger is with Martin.

Maybe Raymond had gone to the one person who knew the entire history.

Before Bell could issue another alert, my phone rang.

Martin.

I answered.

“Where are you?”

“Claire, don’t panic.”

That phrase never worked.

“Is Raymond with you?”

“Yes.”

“Are you safe?”

“Yes.”

“Put him on.”

Martin refused.

“Claire, listen me.

“He came here to give me Arthur’s recording.”

“Why you?”

“Because he doesn’t trust himself.”

“What does that mean?”

“Raymond is falling apart.”

“Good.”

Elaine glanced at me but said nothing.

Martin continued.

“He wants to
