else.”

“What?”

“Aaron said Michael caused his own death.”

My stomach turned.

“What exactly did he say?”

“He said, ‘Michael never understood when to stop.’”

Julian went still.

The phrase was familiar.

“Why are you looking like that?”

I asked.

Julian stared at the phone.

“Thomas used to say that.”

“What?”

“When negotiations went bad.”

I felt another thread connect.

“Thomas said Michael never understood when to stop?”

“No.”

Julian shook his head.

“Thomas used to say it about my father.”

Beatrice whispered, “And Edward.”

I looked at her.

She nodded.

“He said Edward didn’t know when to stop pushing.”

The phrase had moved through decades.

Edward.

Michael.

Now Aaron.

I turned to Daniel.

“What is in the AC folder?”

He looked at the closed laptop.

“We’ll find out when Chen gets here.”

We waited thirty-one minutes.

It felt longer.

When Chen arrived, she brought Ortiz and a forensic technician.

Elena came with another officer shortly afterward.

She looked shaken but unharmed.

Chen documented the drive, then allowed the technician to create a forensic copy.

Only after that did they open AC.

There were financial spreadsheets.

Emails.

Photographs.

And one video.

Date stamped four days before Michael died.

Aaron sat across from Michael in what looked like an office.

Michael was recording secretly.

Aaron did not know.

His voice was clear.

“If you expose this now, everybody loses.”

Michael answered.

“That includes me already.”

Aaron leaned forward.

“You can still get most of your money back.”

“How?”

“Give Julian time.”

“No.”

“Michael.”

“No.”

“You’re making this personal.”

“It became personal when you used my money to cover another project.”

Aaron sighed.

“You don’t understand the structure.”

I almost laughed.

Again.

The same sentence.

Different man.

Michael replied, “I understand enough.”

Aaron lowered his voice.

“If you take this to Vivian, Julian is finished.”

“That’s his problem.”

“And Richard.”

“Also his problem.”

“And Thomas.”

A pause.

Michael frowned.

“What does Thomas have to do with this?”

Aaron looked away.

My heartbeat quickened.

On the video, Michael leaned closer.

“Aaron.”

Nothing.

“What does Thomas have to do with my money?”

Aaron finally answered.

“He owns part of the debt you bought.”

The room went silent.

Daniel whispered, “What debt?”

The video continued.

Michael asked the same.

Aaron said, “The old Cedar Ridge claims.”

Michael stared.

“I bought them through the trust.”

“No. You bought most.”

“How much does Thomas own?”

“Enough.”

“Enough for what?”

Aaron’s face tightened.

“To control what happens if Richard defaults.”

Michael went still.

“So Thomas has been helping me.”

“No.”

Aaron shook his head.

“He’s been using you.”

The video ended.

I stared at the frozen image.

Thomas had not simply been Michael’s backup trustee.

He had held his own claims.

He had allowed Michael to gather evidence.

Perhaps encouraged him.

Perhaps used him.

And four days later Michael was dead.

Detective Chen looked at me.

“This changes who we need to find first.”

“Thomas.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Aaron’s face on the screen.

“And Aaron.”

“Yes.”

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Chen gestured.

“Don’t answer normally.”

She took the phone, put it on speaker, and nodded.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice.

Older.

Calm.

“Vivian.”

Julian’s face changed instantly.

I saw recognition.

Thomas.

I kept my voice steady.

“Where are you?”

He ignored the question.

“You’re finally reading the right files.”

Chen wrote something and motioned for me to continue.

“What do you want?”

“The same thing your father wanted.”

“What?”

“The truth on record.”

“Then come speak to police.”

He laughed softly.

“Richard owns too many versions of the truth.”

“Not anymore.”

“No?”

I looked at Chen.

She nodded.

“What happened to Michael?”

Silence.

Then Thomas answered.

“Ask Aaron why he changed the route.”

Every eye moved to the laptop.

“What route?”

“The route Michael was supposed to take down the mountain.”

My pulse quickened.

“What did Aaron do?”

Thomas’s voice remained calm.

“He told Michael the main road was blocked.”

I looked at Julian.

He shook his head.

He hadn’t known.

“Why?”

“So Michael would take the lower road.”

“The road where Pike was waiting.”

“Yes.”

“Did Aaron know?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

The room went cold.

“Why would he do that?”

Thomas answered with a sentence I would not forget.

“Because Michael had discovered Aaron took more money than all of us.”

The line went dead.

<a
