police station.

Chen did not want it played in my house.

That felt appropriate.

Some truths should not enter certain rooms.

The footage came from a mountain rental property whose old security system had stored backup recordings on a disconnected drive.

The owner had replaced the system years ago and packed the hardware away.

A detective found it after canvassing historic property records around the lower road.

The image was grainy.

Black and white.

No sound.

Timestamp in the corner.

11:57 p.m.

A dark pickup entered the far edge of the frame.

Pike.

He slowed near the switchback.

Then stopped partly across the lane.

Michael’s car appeared seconds later.

Dark sedan.

Headlights.

He braked.

The front end dipped.

Pike’s truck moved.

Not into Michael.

Away.

That was the first surprise.

“He’s clearing the road,” Daniel whispered.

Chen nodded.

The truck shifted toward the shoulder.

Michael passed.

Then another vehicle entered frame behind him.

Julian’s SUV.

My hand tightened around Grace’s.

Not intentionally.

She let me.

Julian’s SUV followed Michael around the bend.

For three seconds, both vehicles disappeared beyond the camera’s main view.

Then Michael’s sedan returned into frame on the next curve.

Too fast.

The rear swung slightly.

Julian appeared behind him.

No contact.

Then headlights emerged from a side access road.

A third car.

Low.

Dark.

It accelerated.

Grace whispered, “Thomas.”

Maybe.

The car entered the main road directly beside Michael.

Michael swerved.

Still no contact.

Then the side vehicle moved again.

Closer.

The passenger side disappeared against Michael’s driver-side rear quarter.

Contact.

Brief.

But clear.

Michael’s car fishtailed.

Julian braked hard.

The third vehicle accelerated away.

Michael corrected once.

Almost recovered.

Then his rear tire caught the gravel edge.

The car rotated.

Hit the guardrail.

Stopped.

For half a second.

Then broke through.

I closed my eyes.

Not because I had not seen it before.

Because now I had.

Michael’s final seconds were no longer imagined.

They existed.

Physics.

Momentum.

Fear.

A car entering from the dark.

When I opened my eyes, the footage continued.

Julian
