never told Julian to marry you.”

“That is a carefully narrow answer.”

“It is the truth.”

“Did you encourage the asleep when Michael asked him to call?”

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“Did you block my calls?”

“Yes.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

He looked away.

“If Michael spoke to you before surgery, he would tell you everything.”

“So you prevented my dying brother from speaking to me.”

Richard’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

There was nothing strategic left in the room.

Just cruelty.

Not screaming cruelty.

Not cinematic evil.

A man touching a setting on a phone system because the truth was inconvenient.

That was worse.

“Did Michael ask for me again after surgery?”

Richard’s expression changed.

“He didn’t wake after surgery.”

I closed my eyes.

So that had been the last chance.

And Richard had taken it.

When I opened my eyes, he was crying.

I felt no urge to comfort him.

“Why keep Michael’s sealed letter?”

“I couldn’t wasn’t.”

“Then why?”

Richard stared at me.

“Because destroying it would mean admitting I planned to lie forever.”

I laughed without humor.

“And keeping it meant what?”

“That someday I could pretend I always meant to tell you.”

The honesty stunned me.

That was it.

Not conscience.

Future self-forgiveness.

He kept the letter so he could imagine a version of himself that eventually became brave.

He never had to become that man as long as the envelope remained unopened.

“What did you expect me to do when I learned about the forty-two percent?”

“I hoped Julian would persuade you not to challenge love as a risk-control strategy.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“And Julian?”

“I used his too.”

“Did you believe he loved me?”

“Yes.”

“Then why risk destroying that?”

Richard looked at me.

“Because I thought love survived more than money did.”

I laughed.

Quietly.

“No.”

He looked up.

“You thought love was easier to manipulate.”

He said nothing.

That was the answer.

I stood.

Richard’s attorney began to speak.

I held up a hand.

“I’m finished.”

Richard looked at him.

I continued.

“That’s what makes all of this worse.”

He lowered his eyes.

“You can care about someone and still decide their life belongs to turned.

“One question.”

Richard looked up.

“If Michael had lived, what were you going to do?”

He stared for a long time.

Then followed me into the hallway.

Chen remained behind.

Julian was waiting near the elevators.

He saw my face.

“What did Dad say?”

I looked at it?”

“No.”

Relief flickered.

I stopped it.

“He exploited it.”

The relief disappeared.

“He saw our marriage as both relinquish executive control during the ownership audit.”

Julian went pale.

I said nothing.

He stared at the floor for several seconds.

Then looked at
