journal.

“Because Richard told me Lillian had agreed to transfer her interest before she died.”

“Did she?”

“I believed him.”

“That is not the same as knowing.”

“No.”

“What happened?”

Thomas sat on the stone bench.

For the first time since I met him, he looked old rather than merely elderly.

“Lillian owned twenty-two percent of the original company.”

“Why?”

“She and Richard inherited it from their father.”

“And she wanted out?”

“According to Richard.”

“According to him.”

“Yes.”

“What happened to the original transfer?”

“He said Lillian signed it but never delivered it.”

I almost laughed.

“That is convenient.”

“It was.”

“Then she died.”

“Yes.”

“Before the transfer was recorded.”

“Yes.”

“And Richard asked you to recreate it.”

Thomas nodded.

“I was thirty-one.”

“That is not seventeen.”

“No.”

“You knew better.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know the signature was forged?”

“I knew Lillian had not signed the replacement.”

My stomach turned.

“So Richard built his control on fraud.”

“Partly.”

“And then spent years condemning Eleanor for unauthorized family.”

“And therefore she could?”

“That was her justification.”

Rachel shook her head.

“That is insane.”

“It is also how people excuse almost anything once they feel wronged.”

Thomas’s voice was quiet.

I thought of the suitcases.

Family believed exposing his father’s fraud would harm Lillian’s surviving children.”

I frowned.

“She had children?”

“One silence.”

Thomas looked at me.

“Yes.”

I laughed bitterly.

“He really did learn every wrong lesson available.”

Thomas did not so.”

“Address?”

“I can find it.”

“No.”

I stopped.

Everyone looked at me.

“No more chasing the next person because an anonymous number points.”

The unknown texter had been useful.

Also manipulative.

They knew too much.

They had page 117.

They had watched Rachel’s house.

They had created or sent a false photograph of Marcus and Eleanor.

They had known Daniel’s movements.

Even if they were helping, they were controlling us.

“We verify first.”

Thomas nodded.

“Good.”

I called the police officer.

I gave him the anonymous photograph.

I explained that the missing page from an evidentiary journal had appeared in a message.

For the first time, the messages themselves became potential evidence rather than merely we regrouped.

Marcus.

Chloe.

Patricia.

Rachel.

Thomas.

Me.

Daniel joined by video from the hospital.

The room looked like an on the table.

“Richard forged Lillian’s transfer.”

Marcus stared.

“What?”

“Thomas helped.”

Marcus turned ended that.

I continued.

“Eleanor later used a financial pathway that appears to have originated in one of Richard’s earlier transfers.”

Patricia nodded.

“So the architecture existed before her scheme.”

“Yes.”

Daniel’s voice came through the laptop.

“That fits Samuel’s
