still.

“I don’t know.”

“Yes, you do.”

“No.”

Eleanor leaned forward.

“He ordered Paul to falsify a transfer.”

“The Lillian transfer?”

“No.”

My skin prickled.

“Which transfer?”

“The one that funded Halcyon.”

Thomas stared.

“I was not involved.”

“I didn’t say you were.”

“Then why are you looking at me?”

“Because Richard used your firm’s seal.”

Thomas seemed to stop breathing.

“What?”

“He duplicated it.”

The old lawyer’s face collapsed.

“Impossible.”

“No.”

“He forged documents under my firm?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before you were a partner.”

“Who helped him?”

“Your senior partner.”

Thomas whispered a name I did not recognize.

“Gerald?”

Eleanor nodded.

Thomas sat heavily.

“He died twenty-five years ago.”

“Convenient, isn’t it?”

He did not answer.

Suddenly the missing records from Thomas’s office made more sense.

The suspicion of a leak.

The compromised law firm.

Patricia’s role.

Old secrets layered under newer ones.

“Did David have proof?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Eleanor shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“Did Denning?”

“Yes.”

“Where is he?”

Silence.

I looked around the room.

Nobody knew.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone went still.

I answered.

No voice.

Only sound.

Wind.

Then a man breathing.

I waited.

“Sarah?”

The voice was old.

Not Denning.

Not Thomas.

Not Daniel.

I had never heard it before.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“You have spent two days digging through dead men’s lies.”

My grip tightened.

“Who is this?”

“Ask Eleanor whether she remembers my voice.”

I put the call on speaker.

“Say it again.”

The man did.

“Eleanor.”

She went white.

Not pale.

White.

Her hand gripped the edge of the table.

“Samuel.”

No one moved.

The dead man was alive.

The voice continued.

“Hello, Eleanor.”

Her lips parted.

“You’re dead.”

“No.”

“Where are you?”

Samuel ignored the question.

“Sarah, page 117 is with me.”

My heart kicked.

“You sent the messages.”

“Some.”

Not all.

The distinction landed immediately.

“Who sent the others?”

“You need to stop assuming there is one person helping you.”

Of course.

Layers again.

“How many?”

“Enough.”

“Why contact me?”

“Because David asked me to if he died before Paul did.”

Every eye turned toward me.

“What does Denning have?”

Samuel breathed into the phone.

“The only recording that can destroy all of them.”

“Richard’s?”

“Yes.”

“What is on it?”

A long pause.

Then Samuel said:

“Richard admitting exactly what he told me to do the night Martin died.”

Eleanor whispered, “No.”

Samuel heard her.

“Yes.”

My skin went cold.

“Did Richard order you to cause the crash?”

Samuel answered carefully.

“No.”

Nobody breathed.

“He ordered me to stop Martin from reaching federal investigators.”

“How?”

“Any legal way I could.”

“Did you?”

“I followed him.”

“And the crash?”

“Was already happening when I came around the bend.”

“So you didn’t cause it.”

“No.”

“Can you prove that?”

“Yes.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“What proof?”

Samuel said:

“The dash recording from my car.”

Twenty-two
