from a crash. I had helped build the transfer system. I had lied to Richard, Martin and Eleanor at different times.”

“So you stayed quiet.”

“Yes.”

“Why come forward now?”

“David.”

My throat tightened.

“What did he say?”

“That silence had stopped protecting anyone.”

That sounded like a lesson David learned too late.

“Did he ask you to testify?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“I wanted immunity.”

“From what?”

“Financial crimes. Samuel’s parked car unknowingly close enough for the microphone to capture fragments.

“You sent Paul?”

Richard:

“Go home.”

“You knew Martin had the journal.”

“Go home, Eleanor.”

“You caused this.”

“No.”

Then:

“You started all of it.”

Richard shouted back:

“You used what I built.”

That sentence stopped me.

It aligned with everything.

Richard created Halcyon.

Eleanor repurposed it.

Both guilty differently.

Then Eleanor said:

“If Martin talks, we both lose everything.”

Richard looked toward the wreck.

“He won’t.”

The sentence sounded horrifying.

But context mattered.

Maybe Richard believed Martin would die.

Maybe he knew.

Maybe he was stating what was obvious at the scene.

It was not proof of murder.

Still, it was cold.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Samuel said, “That is why Eleanor was never prosecuted.”

I looked at her.

“Because she had this?”

“No.”

Samuel answered.

“Because Paul had it.”

I frowned.

“Denning had a copy.”

“Yes.”

“He used it to hold both Richard and Eleanor.”

“Exactly.”

Blackmail.

Mutual destruction.

No one could expose the financial crimes without risking the crash concealment, Halcyon, the forgery, and everyone around them.

A web held together not by loyalty.

By fear.

“What does Paul want now?”

Samuel said, “The original.”

“Why?”

“Because digital copies can be challenged.”

“And yours is original source evidence.”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“No.”

“You cannot keep hiding.”

“I can until we have protection.”

“David died trying to arrange that.”

“I know.”

“Then finish it.”

Silence.

For several seconds, I thought he had hung up.

Then:

“There is someone you need to meet first.”

“Who?”

“The federal investigator David trusted.”

“Name.”

Samuel hesitated.

Then gave it.

“Agent Claire Bennett.”

Thomas stood so quickly his chair hit the wall.

“What?”

Samuel went silent.

I looked at Thomas.

“You know her.”

He stared at the screen.

“She was here.”

“When?”

“The funeral.”

My skin prickled.

I remembered faces.

Flowers.

Hands.

Condolences.

Too many strangers.

“Who was she?”

Thomas’s voice lowered.

“The woman who stood beside the back door.”

Chloe whispered, “Red glasses.”

I remembered.

At the bank lobby.

A woman with red glasses.

I had noticed her.

She had been there.

Watching.

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

You can stop looking for me now.

Then another:

Tomorrow. 8 a.m. Federal Plaza.

Ask for Claire Bennett.

Click here to continue reading: PART 23: Agent Claire Bennett Had Been Watching David’s Funeral, and She
