unmarked vehicle with Rachel.

Marcus remained with Evan.

Thomas stayed at his office.

Daniel stayed in the hospital.

Eleanor had been told almost yet.”

“Boathouse?”

“Being checked.”

We entered.

The interior smelled of damp wood and old dust.

Furniture covered with leave.”

“Why?”

“Because there is nothing there.”

“That is not what you thought before David died.”

Another name.

Not Denning.

Claire wrote it down.

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

Eleanor’s voice hardened.

“Because every piece of evidence I produce becomes proof that I am guilty of something else.”

“That has happened because you are guilty of other things.”

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

No defense.

That still surprised me.

I ended the call.

Agents found the empty recorder in a kitchen drawer.

No tape.

Fingerprints would be processed.

The boathouse took longer.

Daniel had been attacked there.

Old blood evidence had already been don’t know yet.”

That sentence had become almost comforting.

Not knowing was safer than inventing.

At noon, an agent found a recently disturbed patch beneath the boathouse steps.

A waterproof container.

Inside were cassette tapes.

Documents.

A small electronic device wrapped in plastic.

Samuel’s original tracker.

Maybe.

Everything would need verification.

But no dash recording.

Instead, one cassette bore handwriting:

R.H. / GERALD / M.V.

Richard.

Gerald.

Martin Vale.

Claire had the tape photographed, bagged and transferred to proper equipment.

We listened to a working copy.

Richard’s voice.

Gerald’s.

The date was three weeks before Martin’s crash.

Gerald said:

“James found tool needs it.”

“I don’t care.”

That stopped me.

Richard wanted the tracker removed.

Not maintained.

Gerald continued:

“If Martin sees someone has been under the car, he’ll know.”

“He already suspects surveillance.”

“Then why keep following him?”

“Because he’s taking records out.”

Richard sounded angry.

Not murderous.

Afraid.

“Have Samuel remove it.”

“Fine.”

Then Gerald said:

“What about the brake line?”

Richard paused.

“What about it?”

“James says the fitting may have been loosened.”

My skin went cold.

Richard answered:

“By Samuel?”

“He says no.”

“Then who?”

“I don’t know.”

A long silence.

Richard said:

“Replace it.”

Gerald:

“Martin will ask why.”

“Then tell him the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That someone may have tampered with his car.”

I stared at Claire.

This was the opposite of Denning’s implication.

Richard had ordered the brake line replaced.

Gerald asked:

“And if Martin goes to police?”

Richard:

“Then he goes.”

The recording ended.

Rachel exhaled.

“So Richard knew about possible tampering and wanted it fixed.”

“Yes.”

“Did Gerald do it?”

Apparently not.

The garage report showed James judged the line temporarily safe.

Somewhere between Richard’s instruction and Martin’s crash, the replacement did not happen.

“Why?” I asked.

Claire said, “That is now the important question.”

We examined the other tapes.

One contained Samuel reporting that he removed the first tracker.

That explained “correction complete.”

The fifty thousand covered surveillance work over several months, not a single act.

Ugly.

Illegal perhaps.

But not brake sabotage.

Another tape was labeled:

P.D. / GERALD.

Paul Denning.

We listened.

Gerald:

“Richard wants the it?”

“Because someone loosened the fitting.”

Silence.

Paul’s voice changed.

“Who?”

“Samuel denies it.”

“Do you believe him?”

“Yes.”

“Does Richard?”

“I don’t know.”

Paul said:

“Do not create a report saying sabotage.”

“Why?”

“Because you cannot prove sabotage.”

Reasonable.

Then:

“Replace the line quietly.”

Gerald:

“Martin will see the invoice.”

“Then bill it to fleet maintenance.”

My stomach tightened.

Concealment again.

Even when doing the safer thing, their instinct was secrecy.

The tape ended before confirming whether the repair happened.

“Paul knew,” Rachel said.

“He knew there were possible tool marks.”

“Yes.”

“And he later told David James caused the crash through negligence.”

“Yes.”

“He left out his own involvement.”

“Yes.”

That sounded like Denning.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Samuel.

RUN.

One word.

I looked at Claire.

Before I could speak, a gunshot cracked outside.

Rachel dropped instinctively.

Agents moved.

Claire pushed us behind the kitchen wall.

Another shot.

Then shouting.

Not close enough to tell whose voice.

My heart hammered.

“Stay down.”

I did.

For once.

No heroics.

No running toward evidence.

No pretending fear was courage.

Minutes passed.

Then an agent entered.

“Shooter contained.”

“Who?”

“One male.”

“Paul?”

“No.”

“Samuel?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

The agent hesitated.

“Thomas Harper.”

Everything inside me stopped.

“No.”

Claire stood.

“Where is he?”

“Outside. Weapon surrendered.”

“Anyone hit?”

“No.”

“Why did he fire?”

“He says he was shooting at Denning’s vehicle.”

I stared.

Thomas?

Measured Thomas.

Cane.

Law office.

Old guilt.

He had driven here and fired at a car?

We moved only when agents cleared us.

Outside, Thomas sat on the ground beside an SUV.

His cane lay several feet away.

A handgun rested safely beyond reach, already secured by an agent.

He looked devastated.

Not angry.

Paul’s vehicle was gone.

Tire marks cut across the gravel.

Thomas looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

I stared.

“What were you doing?”

“He was here.”

“Paul?”

“Yes.”

“Why did you come?”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Because he called me.”

“When?”

“What did he want?”

“Lillian’s file.”

“You don’t have it.”

“He thought I did.”

“So you brought a gun?”

Thomas looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because thirty years ago I let Richard frighten me into falsifying documents.”

His voice broke.

“And I was not going to let Paul frighten me again.”

“That is not courage.”

“I know.”

Good.

At least he knew.

“Did you hit his car?”

“No.”

“Did he shoot?”

“No.”

“So you fired first.”

“Yes.”

Claire’s expression was hard.

Thomas would face consequences.

He understood that.

Then an agent shouted from the edge of the property.

They had found someone.

Not Paul.

Samuel.

He lay behind a low stone wall near the drive.

Alive.

Blood on his shoulder.

Not a gunshot.

A deep cut.

He had apparently climbed through broken fencing after approaching on foot.

Paramedics moved toward him.

I followed only as far as Claire allowed.

Samuel looked exactly like an old man who had spent decades trying not to be recognized.

Thin gray hair.

Weathered face.

No mystery.

No shadow.

Just a person.

He saw me.

“Sarah?”

“Yes.”

He laughed weakly.

“David described you wrong.”

Despite everything, I said, “Good.”

His smile faded.

“Paul took the dash recording.”

My stomach tightened.

“When?”

“Last night.”

“How did he find it?”

Samuel looked past me.

Toward Thomas.

“No.”

Not Thomas.

His eyes moved farther.

Toward the house.

Someone stood in the doorway.

A woman.

Red glasses.

Claire Bennett.

Samuel’s face filled with fear.

My pulse stopped.

He whispered:

“She told him.”

I turned toward Claire.

She had heard.

Her expression did not change.

“What are you saying?”

Samuel struggled to sit.

Paramedics held him still.

“Six years ago.”

His breathing became ragged.

“The federal me.

“The one Paul had before I ever received it.”

Claire said, “Samuel is confused.”

“No.”

His voice sharpened.

“Paul knew every condition federal counsel offered me.”

“How?”

No answer from Claire.

Samuel looked at her.

“You tell Sarah.”

Claire’s jaw tightened.

I thought of the messages.

The funeral.

The bank.

Her ability to know where we were.

Her claim that she had worked with David for two years.

Her access to Patricia.

To federal files.

To every piece of evidence we voluntarily handed over.

“Did you leak Samuel’s immunity negotiations to Denning?”

Claire said nothing.

That was enough to make everyone around her change position.

Not dramatic.

Professional.

Two agents stepped subtly away from her.

One moved closer to me.

Claire noticed.

Her face went cold.

“You are making a serious mistake.”

Samuel whispered:

“No.”

Then he looked at me.

“This is the mistake David died before he could fix.”

My chest her.

“Ma’am.”

She stopped.

For the first time, the composed federal investigator looked trapped.

I stared at the woman David had trusted.

The woman who had watched his funeral.

The woman who had guided us toward evidence while standing inside the investigation itself.

And I finally understood why Paul Denning had always seemed one step ahead.

He had not merely built a system of compromised relatives, lawyers and accountants.

He had found someone inside the one institution David believed could end it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 29: Claire’s Leak Reached Farther Than Samuel Knew, and
