told Paul Samuel survived.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He already claimed he knew.”

“That does not matter.”

“I know.”

“When?”

“Six years ago.”

That may have been the moment Paul began hunting Samuel.

Claire understood what I was thinking.

“I have lived with that.”

“Samuel had to live with more.”

She nodded.

Again, no defense.

Walsh ended the call.

By evening, internal investigators had located Eric Voss.

He was at work.

He did not flee.

That meant nothing.

His accounts were suspended.

Devices seized through proper authorization.

The process moved slower than emotion wanted.

I went home.

For two hours, I tried not to think.

I fed Max.

Showered.

Sat on the kitchen floor.

The cracked tile had been replaced temporarily with plywood because the evidence compartment remained open.

I looked at the place where David and I once ate cereal after our first terrible fight.

Our phrase.

Kitchen floor.

Stop.

Reset.

He had hidden evidence there because it symbolized exactly what he eventually needed me to do.

Stop following.

Think.

I finally opened another file from his package.

PERSONAL — SARAH ONLY.

I almost closed it.

I was tired of dead-man instructions.

Then I saw the date.

One week before hospice.

I played it.

David appeared in bed.

No camera composition.

No careful setup.

Just my dying husband.

“Sarah.”

He smiled weakly.

“If you found this, you are probably furious.”

“Yes,” I whispered.

“I deserve some of it.”

“Most.”

He seemed almost to hear me.

“I need to tell you something without turning it into another clue.”

My throat tightened.

Good.

“For years I thought the problem was Mom. Then Dad. Then Paul. Then the federal leak.”

He breathed carefully.

“I kept looking for the one person who caused everything.”

I understood.

“There wasn’t one.”

His voice softened.

“There were decisions. Hundreds of them. People protecting family. Protecting reputations. Protecting careers. Protecting themselves. Every secret made the next secret easier.”

A tear slid down my face.

“I became part of that when I met you under false pretenses and didn’t tell you.”

I closed my eyes.

Finally.

Plainly.

No excuse.

“I loved you. That is true. I also used information about your mother to arrange our first meeting. That is true too.”

I cried silently.

“One truth does not erase the other.”

No.

It did not.

“I should have told you before asking you to marry me.”

My chest hurt.

“I should have told you the first day I realized I wanted a life with you.”

He paused.

“I was afraid you would leave.”

There it was.

Not protection.

Fear.

Honest fear.

“So I chose for you.”

He looked toward the camera.

“I am sorry.”

No justification.

No instruction.

Just apology.

I touched the screen.

Then David said something that shifted me again.

“If the federal leak is still unresolved, do not assume the person who leaked was loyal to Paul.”

My pulse changed.

“Paul may not be the top of that chain.”

I sat up.

“What?”

“There are transfers in the Halcyon records Paul never benefited from.”

He coughed.

“Follow the ones after Richard died.”

After Richard.

After the original political scheme.

After Eleanor’s family transfers.

A later phase.

“Look for a recipient called Meridian Civic Strategies.”

My heartbeat accelerated.

I wrote it down.

“Paul believed Meridian belonged to Eleanor.”

David shook his head faintly.

“It didn’t.”

“Who?”

He looked tired.

“I never proved ownership.”

Then:

“But the payment approvals all passed through one federal compliance consultant.”

My skin prickled.

Name.

I waited.

David gave it.

“Eric Voss.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 31: Meridian Civic Strategies Connected Eric Voss to the Hayes Money, but the Account Behind It Belonged to Someone David Had Trusted Completely

I did not accuse Aaron Walsh.
