I did not know where.”

“What happened?”

“I wasn’t here.”

“Who was?”

Mom swallowed.

“Evelyn.”

Dad stared.

“And David.”

Before anybody could speak again, headlights moved through the trees.

A black SUV stopped near the house.

Daniel Mercer stepped out.

He walked toward the open ground.

Dad held up the birth certificate.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“Where is Michael?”

Daniel looked toward the grave.

“That isn’t him.”

Mom whispered something.

Daniel continued.

“Evelyn told me she killed Michael after he discovered something she couldn’t allow Arthur to know.”

“What?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Something about Chloe.”

My pulse accelerated.

“What about me?”

He removed an old laboratory report from his coat.

“The DNA test.”

I stared at him.

“The one excluding David?”

“That test was real.”

“Then who was my father?”

“Not David.”

“Michael?”

“No.”

Mom began crying again.

Daniel handed me the report.

The second name seemed impossible.

Arthur Montgomery Sr.

Dad’s father.

My grandfather.

The document claimed a 99.98 percent probability.

Sebastian went pale.

“That would make Chloe inside me turned numb.

Then Mom pointed toward the grave.

“That isn’t Michael.”

Daniel snapped toward her.

“What?”

“It isn’t Michael.”

“Then who?”

“David.”

Daniel went pale.

I stared at her.

“David is buried in Chicago.”

“Yes.”

“Then whose body is there?”

Mom’s voice dropped.

“Someone else’s.”

Dad demanded Michael’s location.

Mom looked toward the lake.

“He’s alive.”

Nobody spoke.

“When did you last see him?” Dad asked.

Mom hesitated.

“Three weeks ago.”

Then another car approached.

An older gray-haired man stepped out.

Dad nearly collapsed.

“Michael?”

The man looked at him.

Then at Mom.

Then at me.

“Yes.”

I recognized him.

Three months earlier, he had introduced himself as a financial investigator and asked about Grandma’s trust.

Now he walked through the snow toward us.

Dad could barely speak.

Michael pointed at the laboratory report.

“That result is genuine.”

I stared at him.

“So Arthur Sr. was my biological father?”

“No.”

Everyone froze.

“You just said the test was real.”

“It was.”

“Then explain it.”

“The DNA sample belonged to Arthur Sr.”

My breathing stopped.

“But the child sample did not belong to you.”

Mom covered her face.

Michael’s eyes stayed on mine.

“Evelyn switched it.”

“Why?”

“To protect the real identity of your father.”

I felt something close to fury.

“Who is he?”

Michael looked toward Daniel.

“You already know there are people who have spent years preventing Chloe from learning that.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

Michael continued.

“That is why money disappeared from the trust.”

I turned toward Daniel.

“What money?”

He did not answer.

Michael did.

“He has been paying investigators and security people.”

“For what?”

“To watch the people watching you.”

A branch snapped somewhere beyond the tree line.

Michael’s expression changed immediately.

“Get inside.”

Dad frowned.

“What?”

Michael shouted.

“MOVE!”

A sharp crack split the night.

The porch light shattered.

Sebastian grabbed me and pulled me down into the snow.

Another shot struck the earth several feet away.

Dad dragged Mom behind the oak.

Daniel ran toward the house.

Someone was shooting from the trees.

Michael crouched beside me and reached inside his coat.

He pressed a small brass key into my hand.

“If anything happens to me, go to Union Station.”

“What?”

“Locker 317.”

Another shot hit the tree.

Wood splintered over us.

“What’s inside?”

“Everything Evelyn hid.”

“About my father?”

“About all of it.”

He gripped my shoulder.

“And Chloe—”

“What?”

“Whatever you find, do not trust the name on your birth certificate.”

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

His face tightened.

“It means Chloe Montgomery is not the name you were
