twenty-five.”

Before prison.

Before exile.

Before most of the disasters we had been reconstructing.

Evelyn asked him to drive her.

She carried two behind the building.

Fresh excavation.

Large enough to notice.

Not enough to assume a grave.

Then he found something in the barn.

A bloodstained coat.

Dad stared.

“You never told anyone?”

“I asked Mom.”

“What did she say?”

“That an employee had injured himself never said how.

Her name was Lillian Hale.

She worked as a secretary for Jonathan Vane.

Officially, she died in a highway accident.

Victor never believed it.

“She disappeared for three days before the body was found,” he said.

“Where?”

“In her car.”

“Was the car know.”

“I know.”

Victor’s voice was unexpectedly quiet.

Maybe the first sincere thing I had heard from him.

“You were twenty-five.”

“That hasn’t stopped us from blaming people for what they did at twenty-five.”

“No.”

Victor looked toward Thomas.

“True.”

Nobody was exempt anymore.

The question became what each person did after learning better.

Federal agents wanted to search the Orchard immediately.

Michael gave the location.

Victor insisted on coming.

They refused.

He smiled bitterly.

“Then you will miss things.”

An agent replied, “We’ll manage.”

For once, Victor did not get to make himself indispensable.

We drove to Wisconsin the following morning.

Only a limited group went.

Michael.

Dad.

Me.

Sebastian.

Daniel.

Federal investigators.

Victor remained in Chicago.

Thomas stayed with Nora and Claire.

Emily entered protective custody.

Eleanor continued analyzing Bellweather records.

The Orchard property sat behind a rusted gate surrounded by bare fields.

The farmhouse had collapsed partially.

The barn still stood.

Snow covered the land.

Michael stopped near the driveway.

“This is it.”

Dad looked at him.

“You remembered all this time.”

“Yes.”

“And never came back.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because after I found Claire, Mom warned me that some places were dangerous to remember.”

Dad stared.

“That worked?”

“I was twenty-six and about to be framed for drugs.”

Fair.

Agents searched systematically.

Ground-penetrating radar.

Metal detectors.

Old property plans.

We were instructed to remain near the farmhouse.

Sebastian kicked snow from a broken step.

“How many places does this family own?”

“Apparently enough to bury every secret separately.”

Daniel looked at him.

“That was dark.”

“I’m adapting.”

Several hours passed.

Then an agent called Michael.

They had found a cavity behind the barn.

Not a grave.

A concrete vault.

Michael frowned.

“That wasn’t there.”

“When you came?”

“No.”

The vault had likely been built afterward.

Agents opened it.

Inside were metal cabinets.

No body.

Victor had been wrong.

Or partially right.

One cabinet held old Bellweather files.

Another held personal documents.

A third contained evidence bags with no official markings.

One item was Lillian Hale’s brown coat.

Victor’s mother.

Still preserved.

Blood visible beneath aged plastic.

Another contained a revolver.

Another a broken watch.

Another a woman’s handbag.

Agents immediately stopped allowing us near the contents.

This was now a potential homicide archive.

Daniel whispered, “Why would Jonathan keep evidence?”

Dad answered.

“Leverage.”

Maybe.

Or trophies.

Or insurance.

In Bellweather, evidence and power were the same thing.

A locked drawer required a key.

Agents forced it.

Inside sat one file labeled 1989.

LILLIAN HALE.

Victor had been twelve.

The file contained payroll records.

Letters.

Photographs.

Then a statement written by Lillian herself.

She had discovered Jonathan was using client funds illegally.

She threatened to report him.

She also discovered Evelyn knew.

That was worse.

Grandma had not merely been an innocent partner who gradually became frightened.

She had known Bellweather was committing fraud years earlier than anyone admitted.

Lillian planned to expose both.

The final letter was addressed to a prosecutor.

Never sent.

She described a meeting scheduled at the Orchard.

Jonathan.

Evelyn.

Herself.

No one else.

The date was three days before her death.

Michael stared.

“My visit was later.”

“How much later?”

“About a week.”

The fresh soil.

The bloody coat.

Jonathan and Evelyn arguing.

Whatever happened had already happened.

Agents expanded the ground search.

Dad stood away from us.

I approached.

“You okay?”

“No.”

He looked toward the vault.

“My mother.”

“You don’t know what she did.”

“I know she hid this.”

Yes.

That much was undeniable.

Hours later, radar identified another disturbance beneath what used to be the orchard row.

Excavation began.

Nobody spoke.

At four in the afternoon, agents found remains.

Human.

Buried deep.

Not Lillian.

Her documented body had been recovered from the car.

This was someone else.

Male.

Estimated burial decades old.

A ring remained on one finger.

Initials.

JV.

Sebastian stared.

“Jonathan Vane?”

That was impossible.

Jonathan was alive in federal custody.

Michael looked at Dad.

“Then who was wearing his ring?”

Investigators photographed everything.

Inside the grave, beneath the remains, was a waterproof document pouch.

Whoever buried the man wanted something buried with him.

Or hidden beneath him.

The pouch contained legal papers.

One birth certificate.

Charles Vane.

Mother:

Evelyn Montgomery.

Father:

Not Jonathan Vane.

That part we already suspected.

The name listed was Henry Carter.

Rebecca’s father.

Nobody moved.

Charles Vane was not merely Evelyn’s illegitimate son.

He was Henry Carter’s son.

Rebecca’s half brother.

Sebastian made a sound like he might be sick.

Charles was his biological father.

Rebecca was his mother.

And Charles and Rebecca shared a father.

Dad sat down hard on the farmhouse step.

“Oh God.”

The affairs.

The hidden paternity.

The reason Evelyn may have tried to keep Rebecca away from Charles.

The family’s ugliest secret suddenly had a shape no one wanted.

“Did Rebecca know?” Sebastian whispered.

I had no answer.

The document may have been real.

Or another forged birth record.

In our family, paper had lied before.

Daniel looked at the remains.

“Who is that?”

An investigator found a wallet fragment near the pelvis.

Identification partially preserved.

The surname was readable.

Carter.

Dad stared.

“Henry?”

Claire and Rebecca’s father had supposedly died years earlier from natural causes.

But if these remains were Henry Carter, then the history we had been told about his death was false too.

The investigator recovered a damaged driver’s license.

HENRY CARTER.

Rebecca’s father.

Claire’s father.

Charles’s possible father.

Buried on a Bellweather property.

Under documents proving a paternity secret capable of destroying multiple families.

Sebastian walked away from everyone.

I followed but did not touch him.

He stopped near the tree line.

“If that document is it there.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

“What if he knew he was in danger?”

Daniel pointed toward the waterproof pouch.

“He may have hidden the documents at the Orchard before he died.”

Then the burial came later.

That would mean someone killed Henry near the same place he had already hidden evidence.

Or discovered the pouch afterward and buried both together.

Agents searched the rest of the papers.

One final letter.

Henry’s handwriting.

Addressed to Rebecca.

My daughter,

If Evelyn Montgomery tells you I died naturally, do not believe her.

Rebecca covered her mouth.

Dad continued reading.

Henry said he had discovered the truth about Charles.

He had also discovered Bellweather was using money stolen from multiple families.

He planned to confront Evelyn.

If anything happened to him, Rebecca should find a man named Walter Sloan.

Margaret’s husband?

No.

Emily’s adoptive father had been named Peter.

Margaret had never mentioned Walter.

I looked at Michael.

“Sloan.”

He nodded.

The surname mattered.

A relative of Margaret.

Maybe the original link between the clinic, Vane, and Bellweather.

Henry’s final line was underlined twice.

WALTER HAS THE ORIGINAL CONTRACT.

“What contract?” Sebastian asked.

No one knew.

My phone buzzed.

Capital letters.

Emily.

THIS IS WHY JONATHAN WANTED THE ORCHARD LEFT ALONE.

Another message.

THE BODY ISN’T THE MOST IMPORTANT THING THERE.

Then:

LOOK UNDER THE OLD WELL.

Agents searched property maps.

An abandoned well sat fifty yards beyond the barn.

Sealed decades ago.

They opened it at dusk.

No body.

At the bottom sat a rusted metal cylinder.

Inside, dry despite the years, was a rolled contract.

Evelyn Montgomery.

Jonathan Vane.

Henry Carter.

Three signatures.

The founding agreement for Bellweather.

And one clause nobody had seen in the later versions:

Upon proof of criminal conduct by any founding partner, all ownership interests transfer to the harmed client beneficiaries or their descendants.

Eleanor read it twice.

Then looked at us.

“This changes everything.”

“How?”

“Bellweather may never have legally belonged to Evelyn, Jonathan, or Charles after the first fraud.”

“Then who owns it?”

She looked at the names of the original clients.

Families.

Estates.

People whose money vanished decades ago.

“Potentially hundreds of victims.”

I thought of the eleven million dollars I had temporarily frozen.

Rachel’s trust.

Claire’s shares.

Our family holdings.

Maybe none of it was truly ours.

And for the first time, that possibility felt like good news.

Because the ending was no longer about which Montgomery inherited the empire.

It was about whether the people harmed by it could finally get something back.

Click here to continue reading: PART 21: The Founding
