35 – Charles Vane’s Sentencing Ended His Control Over Sebastian, While A Quiet Visit With Rebecca Tested Whether I Could Set Boundaries Without brother had decided he wanted to watch the moment Charles stopped being able to define their relationship privately.

The courtroom was full.

Former Bellweather clients.

Reporters.

Lawyers.

People from adoption cases.

Michael sat several rows behind us.

Dad came but remained near the aisle.

Charles entered in custody.

He had lost weight.

No tailored suit.

No private office.

No employees waiting for instructions.

Still, the moment he saw Sebastian, something in his posture changed.

Ownership.

Recognition.

Expectation.

My brother saw it.

He leaned toward me.

“I hate that.”

“I know.”

Charles’s attorney spoke about age.

Cooperation attempted, though incomplete.

Family history.

Manipulation by Evelyn and Jonathan.

All true.

Prosecutors spoke about choice.

Repeated decisions across decades.

Medical coercion.

Financial fraud.

Witness pressure.

The concealment of Michael’s wrongful conviction.

The use of children’s identities.

All also true.

The judge separated explanation from responsibility.

Again.

That distinction had become the axis of our lives.

Charles was allowed to speak.

He stood.

Looked toward Sebastian.

Then surprised us.

“I loved my son.”

My brother’s hand tightened on the bench.

Charles continued.

“I was not allowed to claim him.”

Sebastian whispered, “Here we go.”

Charles described Evelyn’s rejection.

Jonathan’s manipulation.

Rebecca’s marriage.

Arthur raising the child he believed was his.

The story made Charles sound almost tragic.

Parts of it were.

Then he said:

“Everything I did afterward began with losing what should have been mine.”

Sebastian stood.

Not dramatically.

Just stood.

The judge looked toward him.

He whispered to our attorney.

A request.

The judge permitted him to leave.

I went too.

Outside the courtroom, Sebastian leaned against the wall.

“He still thinks I belonged to him.”

“Yes.”

“I wanted to hear him say something different.”

“I know.”

He laughed bitterly.

“Thirty years of crimes and he gets to the end and still thinks the problem was someone took his property.”

Dad came out.

He stopped several feet away.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Want me to stay?”

“Yes.”

Dad stood beside him.

No speech.

Inside, Charles finished.

Sentence followed.

Long enough that his remaining years would likely be spent under correctional supervision.

Financial penalties.

Restitution.

No ability to control Bellweather assets.

No contact with certain witnesses without approval.

The exact number mattered less to me than the fact that systems finally constrained him.

Afterward, Sebastian asked Dad something unexpected.

“Would you do the adoption again?”

Dad frowned.

“What?”

“If you knew Charles hated it.”

Dad looked offended.

“I did it because you wanted it.”

“Right.”

“That’s the only reason that matters.”

Sebastian nodded.

He had needed to hear it.

His adoption was not a victory over Charles.

Not Dad claiming what another man lost.

It was Sebastian choosing who he wanted recognized as father.

Agency.

Again.

Jonathan’s case resolved differently.

Age.

Competency disputes.

Medical decline.

Some charges proceeded.

Others paused.

Civil restitution remained.

People complained that he might never receive a dramatic trial.

I understood the frustration.

But the victims did not need a perfect ending to make his crimes real.

Bellweather was gone.

Assets frozen.

Records public through court.

Victims compensated where possible.

His power diminished.

Justice did not always arrive in the shape of a single sentence.

Rebecca’s life in custody settled into routine.

She worked in a prison library.

When Daniel learned, he laughed.

“Rachel would appreciate the irony.”

Maybe.

Rebecca wrote fewer letters.

Not because she stopped caring.

Because she finally seemed to understand that constant contact could become another form of demand.

I answered once.

Short.

Thank you for the Christmas card. Work is going well. I hope you are taking care of yourself.

Chloe

No “Love.”

Not because I wanted to punish her.

Because I did not know what word belonged there yet.

Months passed.

Then Rebecca requested a visit.

No stated emergency.

No legal issue.

No family secret.

Just:

If you want to see me, I would like that. If not, I understand.

I stared at the request for three days.

Claire asked whether I wanted advice.

“No.”

“Good.”

I looked at her.

She smiled.

“You’re getting difficult.”

“Apparently inherited.”

I decided to go.

Not because Rebecca had earned it.

Because I wanted to know what it felt like to see her when she could no longer control the setting.

The facility was cleaner and quieter than television prisons.

Security procedures.

Plastic chairs.

Vending machines.

Families speaking softly.

Children coloring.

I hated that there were children.

Not because they should not visit.

Because consequences always reached farther than one person.

Rebecca entered wearing a plain uniform.

Gray in her hair.

No makeup.

She smiled automatically.

Then stopped herself.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

We sat.

No glass partition for this kind of visit.

A table between us.

Her hands remained on her side.

“You look good.”

“Thanks.”

“How’s work?”

“Busy.”

“I saw your company website.”

I stiffened.

She noticed.

“Public website.”

“I know.”

“I won’t search anything else.”

“Okay.”

That was the first boundary test.

Small.

Passed.

She asked about Dad.

“I don’t think that’s mine to discuss.”

She nodded.

“Right.”

Second test.

Passed.

Sebastian?

“He can tell you.”

“Yes.”

Third.

Passed.

The silence afterward felt awkward.

Good.

Awkwardness used to trigger Rebecca into filling space with control.

Now she let it remain.

Finally she said, “I don’t know how to talk to you.”

“That’s probably honest.”

“Yes.”

“What did you want from the visit?”

“To see you.”

“Why?”

She thought.

“Because I miss you.”

Simple.

Dangerous in its own way.

I felt the old reflex.

Comfort her.

Tell her I missed her too.

Make the emotion symmetrical.

I did not.

“I believe you.”

Her eyes filled.

She nodded.

No demand for reciprocation.

I asked about the library.

She brightened slightly.

“Mostly paperbacks.”

“What kind?”

“Mysteries.”

“Rachel liked those.”

The expression changed.

Pain.

“Yes.”

“Daniel told you?”

“He wrote once.”

“What did he say?”

She smiled faintly.

“That she read endings first.”

I remembered.

“He said that too.”

Rebecca looked down.

“I sometimes imagine meeting her.”

I said nothing.

“I know that’s selfish.”

“Not necessarily.”

“She didn’t want to meet me yet.”

“According to Henry.”

“Yes.”

“She might have later.”

“Maybe.”

Rebecca took a breath.

“I used to rewrite that in my head.”

“How?”

“She would have met me and immediately understood everything.”

“That’s convenient.”

“Yes.”

“What do you imagine now?”

“That she might have hated me.”

“Possible.”

“She might have loved me.”

“Possible.”

“She might have done both.”

“Very possible.”

Rebecca laughed softly.

“Like everyone else.”

Maybe.

She looked at me.

“Do you love me?”

There it was.

The question I feared.

Not because I lacked an answer.

Because every answer felt loaded.

I took my time.

“I don’t know what word I want to use.”

Her face tightened.

But she nodded.

“Okay.”

“I care what happens to you.”

“Okay.”

“I think about you.”

She listened.

“I’m not ready to give you a word that might sound like access.”

Rebecca closed her eyes.

When she opened them, tears had gathered.

“That makes sense.”

And because she did not argue, something in me relaxed.

I had expected love to be demanded like another payment.

Instead I was allowed to leave the account unsettled.

She asked one more question.

“Did you keep the name?”

“Yes.”

“Montgomery.”

“Yes.”

A complicated emotion crossed her face.

“Why?”

“Because it’s mine.”

She nodded.

“I’m glad.”

I watched her carefully.

“Not because you gave it to me.”

“I know.”

She meant it.

That surprised me.

The visit lasted another half hour.

We talked about books.

Bad prison coffee.

My business.

Nothing important.

Which made it important.

When time ended, Rebecca stood.

She did not reach for me.

“Thank you for coming.”

“You’re welcome.”

I started toward the exit.

Then stopped.

“Mom.”

She froze.

I had not planned the word.

Neither had she.

I turned.

Her face broke.

I held up a hand before emotion could turn the moment into something larger than I intended.

“That doesn’t mean everything is fixed.”

“I know.”

“It doesn’t mean I’m promising visits.”

“I know.”

“It was just the word that came out.”

Rebecca nodded through tears.

“I’ll take only what you give me.”

I left.

In the parking lot, I sat in my car without starting it.

I had called her Mom.

The word had not trapped me.

That realization mattered.

I could use a relationship word without surrendering the right to boundaries.

I could care without becoming responsible.

I could leave after visiting.

She could survive it.

So could I.

Sebastian called.

“How was it?”

“Fine.”

“That sounds suspicious.”

“It was awkward.”

“Better.”

“She asked if I love her.”

“What did you say?”

“I don’t know what word I want.”

He went quiet.

“That’s good.”

“You?”

“I told her I love her.”

“When?”

“Last phone call.”

I was surprised.

“You do?”

“Yes.”

He paused.

“I also don’t trust her.”

Both.

Again.

Two truths allowed in the same room.

“That makes sense.”

He laughed.

“We’re annoyingly healthy now.”

“Speak for yourself.”

He asked whether I wanted dinner.

I said yes.

No emergency.

No secret.

No urgent financial transfer.

Just dinner.

<a
