Rebecca’s cinnamon rolls.

They came out dense enough to injure someone.

He blamed the oven.

Laura blamed his measurements.

Dad ate two out of near the kitchen doorway watching.

This family would have been impossible to diagram five years earlier.

Biological mother.

Mother who raised me.

Father who raised me.

Biological father.

Half sister.

Brother biologically unrelated to me but more brother than anyone could become through DNA.

Uncle who had dead.

People incarcerated.

People returned.

Labels mattered.

They also had limits.

At midnight, I drove home.

Alone.

By choice.

Snow had begun.

Not much.

Just enough to soften the sidewalks.

Inside my apartment, the Christmas tree lights were still on.

Small tree.

Real this year.

Under it sat gifts from everyone.

No one had bought me anything extravagant.

Claire gave me paints.

Dad and Laura gave me a ridiculous electric kettle.

Sebastian gave me a framed photograph of my old silver bracelet with the caption:

FORMAL EXONERATION, 2029.

Idiot.

Rebecca’s gift could not be mailed directly, but she had arranged through the approved system for a used book to reach me.

A mystery novel.

Inside, she had been permitted to write one line:

You can skip the ending if you want.

I laughed.

Then I placed the book on the shelf.

The cheap DARE TO FLY mug sat nearby.

I still had it.

Not because the message defined me.

Because it was part of the story.

The mug from the night I left.

The night everyone thought I had been thrown out.

Maybe I had.

But I had also been preparing to leave.

That distinction mattered.

The most important thing Rebecca did that Christmas Eve was not forcing me out.

The most important thing I did was realizing her decision no longer controlled where I went.
