people.

Nothing dramatic enough to feel like the revelation I once imagined would settle everything.

Instead, truth seemed to be emerging through accumulation.

A detail here.

A contradiction there.

A child’s consistent fear.

A grandmother’s memory.

A husband’s effort to define his wife before she could define her own experience.

One evening, Rachel and I sat on the floor assembling a bookshelf for Emily.

The instructions were terrible.

“This piece is backwards,” Rachel said.

“No, yours is.”

“Mine matches the picture.”

“The picture was drawn by a criminal.”

Emily wandered in wearing a blanket like a cape.

“You're doing it wrong.”

Rachel looked offended.

“You are five.”

“I can see.”

I laughed.

Rachel pointed at me.

“Do not encourage her.”

For ten minutes, the biggest problem in my world was a badly aligned wooden shelf.

Then my phone rang.

I recognized the number.

One of the professionals involved in the case.

I stepped into the kitchen.

The conversation was brief.

A new interview had produced information significant enough that the protective measures would remain firmly in place.

They could not tell me everything.

Not yet.

But the direction of the case was changing.

I held the phone tighter.

“What does that mean?”

“It means the process continues.”

“Did Emily say something else?”

“I can't discuss details right now.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Procedure.

Protection.

Boundaries.

All necessary.

All unbearable.

“Is she okay?”

“That is the question to keep focusing on.”

When I returned to the living room, Emily had climbed onto Rachel’s back while Rachel attempted to tighten a screw.

“Mommy!”

“Yes?”

“Aunt Rachel is a horse.”

“I gathered.”

“I object,” Rachel said from the carpet.

Emily laughed.

I watched her.

The case was moving toward something I could not yet see.

But I no longer needed to chase it ahead of the people trained to handle it.

My job remained exactly what it had been.

One safe day.

Then another.

That night, however, after Emily was asleep, an unfamiliar number sent me a message.

I almost deleted it.

Then I read the first line.

You don't know me, but I used to work with Scott.

I stared at the screen.

The next line arrived seconds later.

I think there is something you need to know.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: A
