chance’?”

“Absolutely not.”

She nodded.

That seemed to help.

Then:

“Can I have ice cream?”

“Nice formal plan was eventually drafted for a possible supervised encounter.

Ten minutes initially.

Neutral location.

Professional supervisor.

No gifts unless approved.

No discussion of the investigation.

No questions about what Emily had said.

No physical contact unless Emily initiated it.

No requests for pressure.

Some days she said maybe.

Some days no.

Then one afternoon she said:

“I want ten minutes.”

The therapist asked why door.”

“Okay.”

“Daddy didn't ask me to stay.”

That sentence mattered.

“How did that feel?”

Emily thought.

“Better.”

She ate another fry.

Then:

“He said sorry.”

I waited.

“For what?”

“I don't know.”

That surprised me.

“Did he say?”

“He said, ‘I'm sorry I didn't listen when you said stop.’”

My throat tightened.

“What did you say?”

“Nothing.”

“Okay.”

“He said I don't have to say anything.”

Exactly right.

“What else?”

“He asked if Margaret still sleeps with me.”

I almost smiled.

“And?”

“I said yes.”

Another fry.

“Then he cried.”

There.

Not everything had gone perfectly.

Scott’s emotion had still affected her.

But he had not made it her responsibility.

Most importantly, when she left, he let her.

No argument.

No extra minute.

No pressure.

That was the first real test.

And for ten minutes, he passed it.

I would not make it bigger than it was.

But I would not pretend it meant nothing.

That night, Emily taped a new piece of paper beside her old star.

DONE MEANS DONE.

The letters were larger this time.

Straighter.

I stood beside her.

“Another rule?”

“Yes.”

“For everybody?”

She looked at me as though the answer should have been obvious.

“For everybody.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: The Visit Lasted Only Six Minutes, but What Emily Did Afterward
