harder.

We sat another minute.

Then Dara asked, “Can I hug you?”

I thought.

The first coffee, I had said not yet.

At dinner, we stood beside each shoulder.

“What?”

“This is ridiculous.”

“Agreed.”

We hugged normally for maybe three seconds.

Then stepped apart.

No music.

No revelation.

No sudden restoration.

Just physical closeness finally chosen rather than expected.

We continued walking.

Dara did not mention it again.

Perfect.

Later that week, Dad called.

“Your sister sounds happy.”

I almost groaned.

“Did she tell you?”

“Tell me what?”

“Nothing.”

He laughed.

“I asked how she was.”

“And?”

“She said good.”

That was all.

She had not reported the hug.

I smiled.

“Then she’s good.”

Dad changed the subject.

Again, perfect.

Months later, I invited Dara to the cabin with Alicia.

Not because I needed a buffer.

Because I wanted both sisters there.

Alicia brought hiking shoes and complained before the car stopped.

Dara brought nothing.

That had become her habit.

We made dinner.

Alicia burned garlic.

Dara tried to intervene.

Stopped.

Then I asked her to save it.

She did.

The three of us sat on the porch after dark.

For years, I had imagined that if my family ever occupied this space, the cabin would stop being mine.

That fear had not been irrational.

My family had almost proven it true.

But ownership turned out not to depend on solitude.

It depended on choice.

I could share space without surrendering it.

I could invite Dara without making her manager.

I could let Alicia sleep in the second bedroom without giving her permanent rights.

I could ask Dad to stack wood.

Let Mom bring a tablecloth.

Let Margaret sit beneath the oak.

None of those invitations reduced my ownership.

They expressed it.

Alicia looked toward the meadow.

“You know what would be perfect out there?”

Dara and I both turned.

Alicia froze.

“What?”

“Choose your next words carefully,” I said.

“A hammock.”

Dara laughed.

I did too.

“Approved,” I said.

“Seriously?”

“Yes.”

“Can I buy one?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I’ll buy it.”

Alicia pointed at me.

“Control issues.”

Dara nearly fell out of her chair laughing.

I laughed too.

Maybe she was right.

Boundaries can look like control from the outside.

The difference lies in scope.

I controlled my hammock.

My land.

My invitations.

My decisions.

I did not control Alicia’s opinion.

Dara’s feelings.

Dad’s relationship with Margaret.

Mom’s relationship with Dara.

The family archive.

Everyone’s future.

That was the boundary none of us understood before.

Later, after Alicia went inside, Dara and I remained on the porch.

She looked toward the yellow flowers.

“Still impractical.”

“Leave.”

She smiled.

Then she said, “Thank you.”

“For what?”

“Nothing specific.”

I frowned.

“That sounds dangerous.”

“I know.”

She thought.

“Thank you for letting the relationship be what it is.”

That was better.

“You’re welcome.”

She looked toward the dark meadow.

“I spent so long trying to decide what everything should become.”

“The cabin?”

“Everything.”

“And now?”

“I’m trying to see what happens.”

I smiled.

“That sounds inefficient.”

“Extremely.”

We sat quietly.

The porch light cast a warm rectangle across the boards.

The green sofa waited inside.

The gate stood closed below the hill.

Not because Dara was outside it.

Because gates can exist even when people are welcome.

That distinction felt complete now.

The next morning, I woke before my sisters.

I made coffee.

Walked to the creek.

Sat beneath the oak.

Nothing dramatic had been resolved overnight.

The family remained complicated.

Arthur remained flawed.

Grandma remained both loving and fearful.

Dara remained someone capable of real generosity and serious harm.

I remained someone who loved privacy enough to disappear when relationships felt too demanding.

None of us had become simple.

Good.

Simple stories had caused enough damage.

When I returned, Dara stood on the porch holding a mug.

She waited until I was close.

“Can I ask where you keep the extra coffee?”

I laughed.

“You’ve been here three times.”

“I know.”

“You still don’t know?”

“No.”

“Good.”

She looked confused.

“Why good?”

“Because you haven’t started treating this like your kitchen.”

Dara smiled.

“Fair.”

I opened the door.

“Second cabinet.”

She went inside.

I followed.

And for the first time, watching my sister move through the cabin did not feel like watching someone approach a boundary.

It felt like watching a guest.

A welcome one.

<a
