31 – William’s Final Trap Secured Lily’s Control of the Trust, but His Confession Forced Me to Decide Whether I Wanted Him as My Father Again

The court hearing occurred three days later.

Emergency.

Sealed.

Complicated.

I understood perhaps half the legal language.

But I understood the result.

Thomas Keene had acknowledged in 2017 that William Carter remained alive and competent.

That acknowledgment destroyed his argument that William lacked capacity to execute the final amendment.

Lily’s status as adult beneficiary was confirmed.

Her emergency activation stood.

The archive preservation order remained in place.

Keene’s attorneys withdrew the immediate challenge.

They could raise other arguments later.

But the trust no longer hovered between his hands.

Lily walked out of the hearing and sat on a stone bench outside the courthouse.

No celebration.

No smile.

I sat beside her.

“You okay?”

“No.”

We had both started answering that way.

It helped.

She looked at the courthouse doors.

“They kept calling me beneficiary.”

“You are.”

“I know.”

“I don’t think it means what they think it means to you.”

“No.”

“What does it mean?”

She looked at me.

“That people I never met decided before I was born that my blood made me valuable.”

I said nothing.

“I hate that.”

“I know.”

“But now the only reason I can undo some of it is because the same document gives me power.”

“Yes.”

She rubbed her hands together.

“That feels dirty.”

“Power often arrives dirty.”

She looked at me.

“That sounds depressing.”

“It probably is.”

“What do I do?”

“Use it carefully.”

“Then give it away?”

“If that’s what you want.”

She nodded.

“It is.”

Mara Chen began drafting the structure that afternoon.

A survivor-controlled foundation.

Not mine.

Not Lily’s personally.

An independent organization with a board including former subjects, adoptees, medical ethicists, legal advocates, and privacy specialists.

Money from the old trust would fund genetic testing only by informed choice.

Record retrieval.

Health monitoring for people exposed to experimental procedures.

Counseling.

Legal support.

Search assistance for separated families.

No forced contact.

No automatic disclosures.

The opposite of the old system at nearly every point.

Choice.

Consent.

Privacy controlled by the person, not the institution.

When Mara asked what Lily wanted to call it, she answered without hesitation.

“The Open Record Fund.”

Not Carter.

Not Harris.

Not Vollen.

Not Miller.

No family name.

The lineage ended there.

While lawyers worked, investigators continued opening Prague files.

The number of confirmed affected births rose from eighty-six to ninety-three.

Some people were dead.

Some could not yet be located.

Some lived ordinary lives completely unaware their biological histories differed from what they had been told.

The hardest question became whether to contact them.

Samuel wanted immediate disclosure.

Reyes argued for court-supervised outreach.

Lily sided with Reyes.

“Truth isn’t useful if you dump it on someone without support.”

Samuel frowned.

“Delay is what allowed this to survive.”

“Delay and choice are not the same.”

He looked at her.

She continued.

“You spent your life deciding the truth mattered more than how people received it.”

“Yes.”

“That’s why Leonard grabbed me.”

Samuel’s face tightened.

“You’re right.”

She looked surprised.

He almost smiled.

“I’m trying to learn eventually too.”

That word again.

This time we laughed.

Even Lily.

Small progress.

Leonard recovered enough to leave the hospital under supervision.

No charges had yet been decided for the hotel incident.

He had technically attempted to remove Lily during a staged emergency.

His cooperation mattered.

So did his conduct.

Lily refused to advocate either way.

“That’s not my job.”

Good.

Daniel faced a different legal path.

Tampering with contraception.

Fraud.

Participation in Keene’s scheme.

Potential sexual-offense implications depending on statutes and evidence.

His later cooperation would not erase earlier actions.

Karen Bell agreed to provide information about his relationship with her but refused contact between Daniel and Emily for now.

Daniel accepted the boundary.

Lily never asked to see him again.

At least not yet.

Harris faced medical licensing investigations long after retirement, criminal scrutiny, civil claims, and professional disgrace.

He did not resist.

When asked why, he said:

“Because every year I delayed responsibility made the next year worse.”

My mother heard.

So did I.

William’s condition improved.

That created a question I had not expected.

What was he to me now?

He had raised me.

Changed diapers.

Taught me to ride a bicycle.

Waited outside school when I missed the bus.

Sat beside me through appendicitis.

Paid for college.

Walked me down the aisle.

He had also participated in a program that used women and children as instruments.

He had helped place Leonard with Samuel to obstruct an investigation.

He had permitted surveillance of my family.

He had concealed Jake’s conception.

He had built the trust partly as confession, partly as damage control.

And then, eventually, he had risked everything to expose the system.

None of those facts canceled the others.

I visited him alone.

He was sitting in a hospital chair near the window.

For the first time since agents found him, there were no screens between us.

He looked up.

“Susan.”

I closed the door.

“Dad.”

The word came naturally.

I hated that.

I loved that.

Both.

His eyes filled.

“You don’t have to call me that.”

“I know.”

I sat.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked:

“Did you love me?”

He began crying.

“Yes.”

“That isn’t enough.”

“I know.”

“Did you love Mom?”

“Yes.”

“Not enough.”

“I know.”

“Did you love Jake?”

“Yes.”

“Still not enough.”

“I know.”

I leaned back.

“That is the hardest part.”

“What?”

“That people can love someone and still help destroy parts of their life.”

William shut his eyes.

“Yes.”

“I spent eighteen years believing Michael didn’t love me because he wouldn’t touch me.”

He listened.

“Then I learned he loved me and hurt me anyway.”

“Yes.”

“I learned Mom loved me and lied anyway.”

“Yes.”

“Harris says he cared about me as his daughter and still let doctors use my body.”

“Yes.”

“I’m tired of love being used as evidence of innocence.”

William looked at me.

“It isn’t.”

The answer mattered.

“I loved you.”

He breathed slowly.

“And I was guilty.”

I nodded.

“Both.”

“Yes.”

I looked out the window.

“Why did you let me believe you were dead?”

“I thought absence would protect you.”

“Another bad lesson.”

“Yes.”

“Why not contact me when you learned Lily existed?”

“Keene had Jake watched.”

“You could have gone to federal authorities.”

“I had helped corrupt them.”

“Samuel?”

“I did not trust him yet.”

“Mom?”

“Keene threatened her.”

“Everyone had a reason.”

“Yes.”

“None gave me my life back.”

“No.”

His voice broke.

“No.”

I finally asked the question I had avoided.

“Would you change it?”

“All of it.”

“That’s easy now.”

“Yes.”

“What would you actually change first?”

He thought.

Not the trust.

Not Keene.

Not Vollen.

Not his own death.

“The first lie.”

I looked at him.

“When Evelyn told me she was pregnant with Leonard’s child—you—I agreed we would raise you as mine and never tell you.”

My chest tightened.

“That lie?”

“Yes.”

“Why first?”

“Because once I decided I could choose what truth you were allowed to know, every later lie became easier.”

The sentence landed deeply.

That was the pattern.

Not one conspiracy.

A philosophy.

Someone else knows better.

Someone else decides what you can bear.

William wiped his face.

“If I had told you the truth when you were old enough, Daniel would have known you were his sister.”

My stomach turned.

The 2008 affair might never have happened.

Lily’s conception certainly would not have happened in the same way.

One secret had traveled decades.

“Do you want forgiveness?”

“No.”

“Everyone says that.”

“Because asking would be another all?”

“And accept whatever relationship you choose.”

I looked at him.

There it was.

Choice.

Late.

But real.

“I don’t know what relationship I want.”

“That’s fair.”

“You’re still Dad in my head.”

His eyes filled again.

“That eleven.

Missing front tooth.

Baseball cap.

Holding a fish I had caught with him.

On the back he had written:

Susan’s first trout.
