participants.

Reyes warned us that cooperation might reduce his eventual sentence.

Lily said nothing.

Then asked:

“Does cooperation mean he gets to decide what becomes public?”

“No.”

“Does he get to keep identities hidden in exchange for names?”

“No.”

“Does he control survivor contact?”

“No.”

“Then I don’t care if prosecutors listen.”

The difference between justice and revenge became visible in her answer.

She did not need Keene to suffer maximally.

She needed him to stop controlling truth.

During the proffer, Keene confirmed several things.

The Prague archive was authentic.

Rachel had switched Daniel’s old sample.

William had secretly changed the trust in 2017.

Robert Miller’s confession was genuine.

And Keene had known Susan’s real parentage before 2008.

He also admitted something new.

Daniel was not the person he originally intended to use to approach me.

“There was another candidate,” Reyes told us afterward.

“Who?”

“A man connected to the Miller line.”

Michael frowned.

“What man?”

Reyes showed us the name.

Charles Miller.

Michael stared.

“I don’t know him.”

Samuel searched.

Robert Miller had a younger half-brother.

Charles.

Born 1946.

Estranged from the family.

He had worked overseas for decades.

Keene’s original plan involved placing Charles’s son near me.

Not Daniel.

“Why change?” I asked.

“Charles refused.”

That surprised everyone.

“He knew the plan?”

“Enough.”

“What did he do?”

“According to Keene, he threatened to expose them.”

“Another Miller refusing.”

Michael exhaled.

Maybe Robert’s resistance had not been isolated.

Reyes continued.

“Keene abandoned the Miller approach and used Daniel instead because Daniel was easier to manipulate.”

I felt no sympathy for Daniel’s actions.

But the description fit.

Keene found weaknesses.

Ambition.

resentment.

fear.

grief.

Then created conditions.

Not destiny.

Conditions.

That distinction had become crucial.

I asked, “Is Charles alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“New Zealand.”

“Does he know about us?”

“Probably.”

Michael laughed softly.

“Apparently I have relatives everywhere.”

Reyes’s face remained serious.

“There’s a reason this matters.”

“What?”

“Charles has kept records.”

My pulse quickened.

“More records?”

“Yes.”

“What kind?”

“Correspondence from Robert.”

Michael went still.

“About me?”

“Yes.”

“And Susan?”

“Yes.”

“Does Charles still have them?”

“He says he does.”

“Will he provide them?”

“He already agreed.”

The first scanned letter arrived an hour later.

Robert to Charles.

1981.

Michael has met Susan Carter.

Arthur will see this as confirmation of his projections. Do not let anyone tell the boy his affection is evidence the program works. Human beings are not breeding outcomes.

Michael stopped reading.

I touched his shoulder.

He continued.

If they remain together, I hope it is because they choose one another in spite of all this.

My eyes filled.

Robert had understood the danger.

Not merely of manipulation.

Of interpretation.

Even genuine love could be stolen afterward and claimed as proof of someone else’s design.

Michael looked at me.

“They don’t get that.”

“What?”

“Us.”

I nodded.

“No.”

Another letter.

1983.

Michael intends to marry her.

I am terrified for both of them, but I will not interfere. I spent years condemning Vollen for shaping lives. I will not become him simply because I dislike the circumstances.

Michael laughed weakly.

“Dad knew before I proposed.”

“Parents usually do.”

“He knew from another country.”

“Apparently surveillance was contagious.”

The third letter was dated shortly before Robert’s death.

If Michael and Susan have children, I want Charles to know this: whatever the foundation records, those children belong to themselves.

Jake, standing behind us, read that line.

Then Lily.

Neither spoke.

They didn’t need to.

The dead man had written the principle every living adult around them had violated.

Your children belong to themselves.

Not to bloodlines.

Not to trust documents.

Not to parents’ guilt.

Not to institutions.

The letter ended with something addressed indirectly to Michael.

If I do not survive, tell him I regret ever believing science gave me the right to plan another person’s life.

Michael folded the copy.

“He figured it out.”

“Yes.”

“Before William.”

“Yes.”

“Before Harris.”

“Yes.”

“Before Keene ever did.”

Keene perhaps never had.

Then Michael looked at Jake.

“And David?”

“What about him?”

“He agreed to help me have a child.”

Jake nodded.

“But only if I knew.”

“Yes.”

Michael’s voice softened.

“That matters.”

Jake sat beside him.

“It does.”

The next morning, Mara Chen brought draft documents for the Open Record Fund.

Lily reviewed one clause for nearly an hour.

It concerned notification of living subjects.

Eventually she changed a sentence.

Original:

Individuals shall be notified when evidence indicates their records are affected.

Her revision:

Individuals shall be offered confidential access to information indicating their records may be affected, with the choice to receive, delay, or decline disclosure except where immediate medical risk requires notification.

Mara read it.

Then nodded.

“Better.”

I watched Lily.

Eighteen years old.

A girl everyone had planned to use as a mechanism.

Now changing language so no one else would be forced into truth the way we had been forced into ignorance.

The symmetry was almost painful.

Then Reyes arrived.

“We located another program child.”

Lily looked up.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Reyes looked toward Michael.

“Charles Miller’s son.”

The man originally intended to approach me.

“Name?”

“Jonathan.”

Michael frowned.

“What does he have to do with now?”

“Keene claims Jonathan refused the assignment in 2007.”

“Good.”

“And disappeared.”

My pulse tightened.

“Disappeared?”

“Charles says his son has been missing since 2008.”

The year Daniel entered my life.

“Keene says he doesn’t know what happened.”

No one believed him automatically.

But Keene no longer needed to be the answer to everything.

Reyes continued.

“Charles received one postcard in 2012.”

“From Jonathan?”

“Possibly.”

“What did it say?”

She placed the scanned image on the table.

Four handwritten words.

I FOUND THE CHILD FIRST.

Lily stared.

“What child?”

No one knew.

Then Samuel, reading remotely, spoke.

“Maybe not Lily.”

The room quieted.

“What do you mean?”

He pulled up the earliest Prague placement list.

“There was another child connected to Susan before 2008.”

My stomach turned.

“No.”

“Not your pregnancy.”

“Then who?”

“A 1992 embryo.”

I stared at him.

“The canceled procedure.”

“It was canceled for you.”

My skin chilled.

“What happened to the embryo?”

Samuel scrolled.

Transferred to surrogate.

Outcome unknown.

Everyone went silent.

Another possible child.

Created from material connected to me.

Placed elsewhere.

Hidden for decades.

And Jonathan Miller’s message suggested he had found that child before disappearing.
