yes.”

“You didn’t give birth to me.”

“No.”

“Did you know about me?”

“No.”

“Did you consent to creating me?”

My throat tightened.

“No.”

She closed her eyes.

I thought she might end the call.

Instead she asked:

“Did my parents know?”

“No.”

“They’re both dead.”

“I’m sorry.”

“They were good parents.”

“I’m glad.”

She opened her eyes.

“That matters to me.”

“It should.”

“I don’t want anyone turning them into kidnappers.”

“No one will.”

“You mean that?”

“Yes.”

“They adopted me legally in Canada.”

“We know.”

“They loved me.”

“I believe you.”

She studied me.

Then:

“Do I have siblings?”

I almost laughed from the absurdity.

“Yes.”

“How many?”

“That is complicated.”

She smiled faintly.

“I’ve been briefed enough to expect complicated.”

“Jake.”

“My son.”

“Lily.”

“My biological daughter through another unauthorized procedure.”

Claire absorbed that carefully.

“And Leonard?”

“My half-brother.”

“Daniel?”

“Also my half-brother.”

“This family needs a chart.”

“Yes.”

For the first time, we both laughed.

It lasted only a second.

But it was ours.

Then Claire asked:

“Who was my biological father?”

“Robert Miller.”

“Michael’s father.”

“Yes.”

She looked toward Michael.

He stepped into view.

“Hello.”

Claire stared.

“So you’re my half-brother.”

“Yes.”

“And Susan’s husband.”

“Yes.”

“That is going to take some time.”

Michael smiled weakly.

“For all of us.”

Claire nodded.

Then asked the question I had feared.

“Why was I made?”

I answered carefully.

“Because people involved in the program wanted a child with specific family genetics.”

“So I was designed.”

“Yes.”

“Like Lily.”

“Yes.”

Claire looked down.

“That’s disgusting.”

“Yes.”

“But I’m not.”

“No.”

Her eyes lifted.

“No hesitation.”

“None.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

We talked for an hour.

Not about Keene mostly.

About ordinary things.

She taught music.

Had two daughters.

Loved gardening.

Hated flying.

Her parents had named her Claire because her mother loved a song with that name.

No hidden code.

No lineage meaning.

Just a mother choosing a name she liked.

That detail mattered enormously.

At the end, Claire said she needed time.

“I don’t know what relationship I want.”

“That’s okay.”

“I might want none.”

“That’s okay.”

“I might change my mind.”

“That’s okay.”

She looked relieved.

“Good.”

Then before disconnecting, she said:

“One thing.”

“Yes?”

“Who is Jonathan?”

“The man who removed you from the program.”

“Is he alive?”

“We think so.”

“Then find him.”

I nodded.

“We will.”

She looked at me.

“Not because I owe him anything.”

“No.”

“Because I want to ask why he chose me.”

“Understood.”

The call ended.

Reyes entered minutes later.

“We may have found him.”

My pulse jumped.

“Jonathan?”

“A man using one of his known aliases crossed into the United States six weeks ago.”

“Where?”

“Virginia.”

“Current location?”

“Unknown.”

“Why return now?”

Reyes placed a surveillance photograph on the table.

A man in his mid-fifties leaving a courthouse.

Carrying a file box.

Stamped with one name.

THOMAS KEENE.

Jonathan had returned before Keene surrendered.

And apparently he had been building a case of his own.
