important truths do.

That evening, I went home for the first time in days.

Our house looked unchanged.

That offended me.

The kitchen still had the chipped tile near the refrigerator.

The living room still smelled faintly of Michael’s coffee.

The hallway still held family photographs based on relationships whose genetics had changed automatically.

Old instincts.

Michael checked the camera.

Federal courier.

He opened the door.

One envelope.

From Reyes.

Inside was formal notice.

Thomas Keene had signed a comprehensive cooperation agreement and plea framework, subject to court approval.

Attached was a list of locations he had agreed to disclose.

Records.

Accounts.

Stored samples.

Survivor files.

And one handwritten addition.

I recognized Keene’s writing from old medical notes.

There is one person Susan still believes is a victim who knowingly helped me after 2008.

My stomach tightened.

Michael read over my shoulder.

“No.”

Lily sighed.

“Seriously?”

Evelyn went pale.

I noticed.

“Mom.”

She looked away.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“You reacted.”

“Because I’m afraid.”

“Of whom?”

She did not answer.

I placed the note on the table.

No more guessing.

No more letting Keene control us by dropping names one at a time.

“We wait for evidence.”

Everyone looked at me.

Michael smiled faintly.

“That’s new.”

“Yes.”

We finished dinner.

The note remained unopened beyond the first page.

For once, we chose not to let a secret interrupt the life already happening in front of us.

But the next morning Reyes called with verified evidence.

Keene had identified the person.

And this time, the name was not from my parents’ generation.

Not Harris.

Not Rachel.

Not Daniel.

Not Leonard.

It was someone who had sat inside our family for years after Lily’s birth.

Someone we trusted.

Someone who had helped Keene monitor whether Michael was getting too close to the truth.

I listened to Reyes.

Then sat down slowly.

The name she gave me was Jake’s former college counselor.

The same counselor who had introduced Jake to Lily three years earlier.

That meeting had not been accidental.

And whoever arranged it had apparently wanted Jake and Lily to find each other.

Click here to continue reading: PART 37: Jake’s Counselor Admitted His Meeting With Lily Was Arranged, but the
