David had shouted before. He had slammed doors, broken dishes, and stumbled through the house after drinking. But tonight there was another man downstairs with him, and Chloe had heard her mother say, very clearly, “David, stop.”

Chloe sat rigid on the edge of her bed with her five-year-old brother, Liam, tucked against her side. His pajama shirt was twisted where he had been gripping it with both fists. Neither child spoke. They had learned that talking during one of their father’s rages could draw attention upstairs, and attention was something Chloe had become skilled at avoiding.

A heavy thud came from below them.

Liam flinched.

“Was that Mom?”

Chloe put one finger against her lips.

Another sound followed—the scrape of furniture across the floor, then a man laughing. Chloe recognized the second voice. Vince had been at the house before. He was one of David’s drinking friends, a broad man who always smelled of cigarettes and who spoke to children as though they were furniture occupying space he wanted.

Sarah’s voice rose again.

“Get out of my house.”

The laughter stopped.

Chloe slipped from the bed.

“Where are you going?” Liam whispered.

“I’m checking.”

“Mom said stay here.”

“I know.”

She opened the bedroom door only enough to see the hallway. The house looked almost normal. The night-light near the bathroom painted a soft yellow circle on the wall. Family photographs hung in their usual places. A school picture of Chloe smiled from one frame. In another, Liam sat on David’s shoulders at a county fair three summers earlier.

Those photographs bothered Chloe lately. Everyone in them looked like people from another family.

She moved toward the staircase without shoes.

From halfway down, she could see part of the living room.

A lamp had been knocked sideways. One of the couch cushions lay near the fireplace. David stood with his back to the stairs, shoulders hunched beneath his wet work jacket. Vince was near the kitchen doorway.

Sarah stood between them and the front door.

Her hair had fallen loose around her face.

“You need to leave,” she said.

David stepped closer.

“This is my house too.”

“I’m not doing this tonight.”

“You started it.”

“I asked you not to drink here.”

Vince muttered something Chloe could not hear.

David turned toward him, and Sarah took one step toward the front door.

David caught her arm.

Chloe’s stomach tightened.

Sarah did not scream. Locking it seemed dangerous; if David found it locked, he might become angrier. Chloe left it unlatched and guided Liam toward the closet.

“Get inside.”

“I don’t want to.”

“We’re playing the quiet game.”

He shook his head.

“Please.”

That word changed him. Teachers said it. School counselors said it. Cartoons said it.

But what happened when the grown-up causing the fear was your father?

Her mother usually became quiet after these nights. The next morning she would wear long sleeves or say she had bumped into something. David would make pancakes. He would apologize. Sometimes he brought flowers.

Then everyone behaved as if the previous night had happened to somebody else.

Chloe had started counting those mornings.

There had been too many.

She remembered something else.

Two weeks earlier Sarah had stood in the kitchen holding her phone and speaking to someone in a low voice. When David entered, she had ended the call immediately.

That evening he had demanded to know whom she was talking to.

Sarah said nobody.

David had taken her phone.

Chloe had not seen it since.

Another crash shook the house.

Liam whimpered.

“I want to call Grandma.”

Chloe suddenly remembered the old phone.

Sarah had given Chloe her previous cell phone months ago after upgrading. It had no regular service. Chloe used it for games and photographs.

A police officer who visited their school had once said something Chloe had not understood at the time: even some phones without normal service might still be able to reach emergency services.

The phone was inside her desk drawer.

Six feet away.

The closet suddenly felt very far from it.

“Stay here,” Chloe whispered.

Liam grabbed her sleeve.

“No.”

“I need my phone.”

“What if Dad comes?”

“Then don’t come out.”

“I’m scared.”

“So am I.”

The admission made them stare at each other.

Chloe squeezed his hand.

“I’ll come back.”

She slipped from the closet.

The bedroom was dark except for light leaking beneath the door.

Chloe crossed toward the desk.

A floorboard creaked in the hallway.

She froze.

Footsteps approached.

Her hand was inches from the drawer.

The bedroom door opened.

David stood there.

Chloe forgot how to breathe.

He looked around the room.

His face was flushed, his hair wet with rain and sweat.

“What are you doing?”

“Nothing.”

“Where’s Liam?”

Chloe forced herself not to look toward the closet.

“He went to the bathroom.”

David stared at her.

For one terrible second she thought he would check.

Then Vince called from downstairs.

“Dave.”

David glanced over his shoulder.

Sarah said something Chloe could not make out.

David swore.

He looked back at Chloe.

“Stay upstairs.”

She nodded.

“And stop listening to adult conversations.”

“I will.”

He closed the door.

Chloe waited until his footsteps disappeared.

Then she opened the desk drawer.

The phone lay beneath a coloring book.

Her fingers shook so badly that she dropped it.

The plastic case struck the wooden floor with a tiny click that sounded enormous.

She picked it up and returned to the closet.

Liam was crying silently.

“You took forever.”

“It was only a minute.”

“It felt forever.”

Chloe turned on the phone.

Nine percent battery.

No service.

She stared at the screen.

“What are you doing?”

“Calling someone.”

“Grandma?”

“No.”

She opened the emergency-call screen.

Three numbers.

She knew them.

Everyone knew them.

But dialing them felt like crossing a line that could never be uncrossed.

911.

Her thumb hovered over the final button.

David was her father.

He had taught her to ride a bicycle.

He had carried her to bed when she fell asleep on the couch.

He had once spent an entire Sunday building a cardboard castle because she wanted one.

He was also downstairs with her mother, and Chloe had heard Sarah tell him to stop.

Both things could be true.

That was the hardest thing Chloe had learned about adults.

Another blow came from downstairs.

Sarah cried out.

Chloe pressed CALL.

The phone rang once.

A woman answered.

“911.
