father.”

“And they were hiding from him.”

Linda exhaled sharply.

“He was drinking.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Do not contact it.”

Silence.

Sarah rarely spoke that sharply before.

Her own voice surprised her.

Linda responded quietly.

“You’ve changed.”

“Yes.”

“David says you’re turning everyone against him.”

Sarah almost laughed.

“No.”

She looked toward Chloe and Liam eating breakfast.

“He’s finally losing control over the story.”

Linda said nothing.

Sarah continued.

“If you want a relationship with the children someday, it begins by respecting the protective order and respecting me.”

“You’re keeping his children from him.”

“The court is.”

“You started this.”

“No.”

Sarah’s voice remained calm.

“David started this years ago.”

Linda inhaled.

Sarah waited for argument.

Instead Linda said something unexpected.

“His father used to say the same thing.”

Sarah froze.

“What?”

“That I started it.”

Linda’s voice became thin.

“When he hit me.”

Neither woman spoke.

Rebecca had told the truth.

Sarah looked at the kitchen wall.

“Then you know.”

Linda began crying quietly.

Sarah felt no triumph.

Only exhaustion.

“You know exactly why I’m not going back.”

Linda whispered, “Yes.”

“Then stop asking me to.”

Sarah ended the call.

For several minutes she remained still.

Chloe watched from the table.

“Was that Grandma?”

“Yes.”

“Are you say?”

Sarah looked toward her daughter.

For once, she did not need Chloe to carry the entire complicated truth.

“She understood more than she wanted to.”

Chloe nodded slowly.

“Is that good?”

Sarah sat beside her.

“It’s a beginning.”

<a
