road.”

“Why?”

Chloe shrugged.

“Because far away doesn’t mean gone forever.”

The counselor did not interpret.

She simply asked, “Do you want him closer?”

“Not now.”

That answer was enough.

At home, Sarah still checked locks before bed.

But once.

Not five times.

Chloe still disliked shouting in public.

But she no longer froze every time a man raised his voice.

Liam still asked questions about jail.

But he also asked more questions about dinosaurs.

Rebecca visited twice a month.

Linda asked before attending events.

Marcus moved on to other cases.

Jessica still stopped by occasionally but increasingly for coffee rather than safety planning.

One Saturday she sat at the kitchen table while Liam poured syrup onto pancakes.

“Too much,” Sarah said.

“No such thing,” Jessica replied.

Liam pointed triumphantly.

“Officer says.”

“She does not live here.”

Jessica smiled.

Chloe brought out the blue notebook.

“I made a new plan.”

Jessica looked concerned.

“What kind?”

“Birthday.”

She opened to a page listing:

CAKE.

PIZZA.

MAYA.

SKATING.

NO SINGING TOO LOUD.

Jessica smiled.

“That’s an excellent emergency plan.”

“It’s not emergency.”

“Exactly.”

Sarah stood at the stove.

She watched her daughter argue about cake flavors.

Her son steal strawberries.

A police officer laugh at the scratched table.

Months earlier Jessica’s presence in their life meant danger had happened.

Now she was simply a person drinking bad coffee on Saturday.

Sarah flipped a pancake.

It landed crooked.

Liam groaned.

“You’re still bad.”

“I have many strengths.”

“Pancakes aren’t one.”

Chloe laughed.

Sarah did too.

The sound filled the house.

No one lowered their voice afterward.

No one listened for footsteps.

No one waited to discover whether happiness had made someone angry.

Outside, rain began lightly.

Chloe looked toward the window.

Once, that sound had carried her back to the night of the emergency call.

Today she barely noticed.

She was too busy writing MAYBE CHOCOLATE CAKE in her notebook.

Sarah noticed the rain.

She always might.

But memory did not command her anymore.

It was only one thing among many.

The refrigerator hummed.

Jessica drank coffee.

Liam drowned another pancake in syrup.

Chloe planned her birthday.

And the rain against the windows was, once again, only weather.

Click here to continue reading: PART 21:
