know.”

David nodded.

“I’m not telling you how to treat her.”

“Good.”

“I’m telling you if she reacts strongly to something, don’t use me as a reason to dismiss her.”

Aaron stared.

David continued.

“But don’t let my history turn you into someone who’s afraid to disagree with her either.”

Aaron looked surprised.

David smiled sadly.

“She needs a real relationship, not a performance of perfect safety.”

When Chloe returned, both men were quiet.

“What happened?”

Aaron said, “Your dad threatened me.”

David almost choked.

Chloe stared.

Aaron grinned.

“Joke.”

“Not funny.”

David laughed.

The sound caught Chloe off guard.

For a second she remembered pancake mornings.

Then the memory passed.

Later Aaron told her what David actually said.

Chloe became quiet.

“Was that weird?”

“Yes.”

“Useful?”

“Unfortunately.”

She laughed.

The relationship with Aaron continued.

No proposal yet.

No dramatic promises.

Two young adults learning each other.

Chloe still noticed exits sometimes.

She still reacted strongly to sudden anger.

But she also argued.

Said no.

Changed plans.

Disappointed someone.

Allowed herself to be disappointed.

That was perhaps the largest change.

She no longer measured a relationship by the absence of conflict.

She measured what conflict became.

Did it become fear?

Control?

Punishment?

Or conversation?

The answer was not always perfect.

It did not need to be.

One evening Aaron forgot an anniversary of their first date.

Chloe was furious.

He was embarrassed.

No one called police.

No one hid.

No one broke anything.

They ordered takeout.

He bought flowers the next day.

Chloe stared at them suspiciously.

“What?”

“Flowers have history.”

Aaron looked at the bouquet.

“Oh.”

Then he laughed.

“Should I return them?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Chloe took them.

Flowers did not belong to David either.

That realization pleased her.

She put them in water.

Click here to continue reading: PART 35: Liam Reached the Age David
