slowly.”

Nora waited.

“I didn’t go from being scared of him to trusting him.”

Chloe looked at her daughter.

“I went from no contact, to harsh.”

“Maybe.”

“Do you think he’s sad about it?”

“Probably.”

“Do you care?”

Chloe smiled.

“Yes.”

That surprised Nora.

“You can care about someone’s feelings without letting those feelings decide your boundaries.”

Nora leaned back.

“Is everything in this family a lesson?”

“Unfortunately.”

Aaron laughed from across the room.

The warning lasted forty minutes.

No tornado touched down near them.

The wind weakened.

Rain continued.

When they emerged from the basement, the house remained dark.

Aaron checked outside.

The fallen limb had destroyed part of the fence.

Nothing more.

Nora went to bed.

Chloe stayed in the kitchen.

Rain tapped the windows more gently now.

Aaron joined her.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“Actually?”

She gave him a look.

He smiled.

Chloe looked toward the dark hallway.

“That was strange.”

“The storm?”

“Nora.”

“What about her?”

“She reached for her phone.”

Aaron waited.

“So did I.”

“Normal emergency behavior.”

“I know.”

Chloe smiled.

“When I was nine, the phone felt like the only door.”

She looked at her own device.

“Tonight it was just one tool.”

That difference felt enormous.

The next morning power remained out.

School closed.

Nora complained about internet deprivation.

Aaron made coffee on the camping stove.

Chloe called Sarah.

“Storm okay?”

“Yes.”

“Damage?”

“Fence.”

“Michael says he can fix it.”

“No.”

Sarah laughed.

“He heard that.”

“Good.”

Chloe told her about the basement conversation.

Sarah became quiet.

“Nora knows more now.”

“She’s fourteen.”

“I know.”

“Does that bother you?”

“A little.”

“Why?”

Sarah sighed.

“I never wanted the grandchildren carrying this.”

Chloe looked through the window.

“Nora isn’t carrying it.”

“How do you know?”

“Because she asked questions and then went back to complaining about Wi-Fi.”

Sarah laughed.

“That’s reassuring.”

“She knows.”

Chloe paused.

“But knowing isn’t the same as living inside it.”

Sarah understood.

That was perhaps what breaking a cycle actually looked like.

Not deleting history.

Making history safe enough to discuss.

David called later.

Not because of the storm’s emotional significance.

Because the weather report showed damage in Chloe’s county.

“Everyone okay?”

“Yes.”

“Need anything?”

“No.”

“Fence?”

“How does everyone know about the fence?”

“Nora texted Megan.”

Chloe laughed.

“Michael wants to fix it.”

David paused.

“Do not let him.”

“Thank you.”

“I’ve seen his gate.”

They laughed.

Then David asked, “Storm bother you?”

Chloe knew what he meant.

“A little.”

“I’m sorry.”

The apology came without theatrics.

He had apologized for the rainy night before.

Many times.

Chloe no longer needed another.

“I know.”

Silence.

Then she said, “Nora asked about it.”

David became quiet.

“What did you tell her?”

“The truth.”

“Good.”

No request to soften it.

No fear for his reputation.

That mattered even after all these years.

“She asked how I can have a relationship with you.”

David inhaled.

“What did you say?”

“That it took a long time.”

“Accurate.”

“She knows it depends on your behavior.”

Another pause.

“Also accurate.”

Chloe smiled.

“Does that hurt?”

“Yes.”

There it was.

Honesty.

“Okay.”

“But it should be true.”

Chloe looked toward the yard.

The broken fence lay across wet grass.

“Thanks.”

“For what?”

“Not making me take care of how you feel about it.”

David was silent.

Then said, “That took me a long time to learn.”

“I know.”

After the call, Chloe found Nora eating cereal.

“Grandpa called.”

“Because of the storm?”

“Yes.”

“Was he worried?”

“Yes.”

Nora nodded.

Then returned to her phone.

No existential crisis.

No fear.

Grandpa David was a person who had once done terrible things and who now called after storms.

Both.

The power returned that afternoon.

Lights blinked on.

Refrigerator hummed.

Router restarted.

Nora cheered louder for Wi-Fi than she had for tornado safety.

Chloe laughed.

That evening the rain stopped.

She walked outside.

The air smelled wet and clean.

Not symbolically clean.

Just rain-soaked earth.

Aaron stood beside the broken fence.

“Michael texted instructions.”

“Delete them.”

“He included diagrams.”

“Block him.”

Aaron laughed.

Chloe looked toward the sky.

For years rain had belonged partly to memory.

The rainy night.

The call.

The sirens.

Then rain became weather.

Then, occasionally, memory again.

Healing had never been a straight transfer from one category to the other.

It moved back and forth.

That was okay.

Inside, Nora shouted that the television was working.

Chloe turned toward the house.

No one was hiding.

No one whispered.

No one needed rescue.

She went inside.

Click here to continue reading: PART 40: The Officer Who Found Chloe in the
