first.

“Lacey?”

Her breathing quickened.

The nurse moved immediately.

The chapel turned from stillness to motion.

Oxygen.

Pulse check.

Wheelchair repositioned.

Jeremy stepped aside.

I reached for his arm without thinking.

He looked down at my hand.

I removed it immediately.

The nurse said, “We need to go back.”

Lacey opened her eyes.

“No.”

“Lacey.”

“No at him.

“I’m done.”

His face collapsed.

“No.”

“I’m tired.”

“Just go back for house.

The treatments.

The insurance scheme.

The marriage.

Every repair had been Jeremy’s way of refusing helplessness.

I looked at him.

“She gets to decide.”

He stared at me.

Then at Lacey.

His shoulders sagged.

The fight went out of vibrated.

Karen.

I ignored it.

It rang again.

Then a text appeared.

Please call me before you talk to Mark. There is something else you need to know.

I showed Jeremy.

He closed his eyes.

“What now?”

I did not answer.

Because beneath Karen’s message, another arrived.

From an unknown number.

Jill, this is Thomas Reed, Lacey’s attorney.
