Melissa.”

“Yes.”

“What did you ask her to do?”

“Help make the paperwork acceptable.”

“By lying.”

“I didn't phrase it like that.”

“Reality does not care about your phrasing.”

Silence.

“Did you tell Melissa Jeremy was still married to me?”

“Yes.”

“Did she know?”

“Yes.”

“Then she deliberately changed the statement.”

“I don't know exactly what she changed.”

“Were you there?”

“For part of it.”

“Did Lacey sign?”

“Yes.”

Lacey whispered, “I signed one page.”

Mark heard.

“You signed the replacement statement.”

“I don't remember that.”

“You did.”

“Did you explain what it said?”

“No.”

Jeremy stepped toward the phone.

“Did you tell her it said I claimed to be divorced?”

Mark went silent.

“Mark.”

“No.”

“So she signed something she didn't understand.”

“Yes.”

My hands shook.

“Did you sign anything?”

“No.”

“Did Jeremy?”

“No.”

“Then the filing contains a statement about Jeremy that Jeremy never made.”

“Yes.”

That sounded serious even without legal training.

“Why?”

Mark’s voice cracked.

“Because Lacey was terrified.”

“So you helped.”

“Yes.”

“And because you had history with her.”

Silence.

Karen must have been listening nearby.

Mark said quietly, “Yes.”

I looked at Jeremy.

He stared at the floor.

The old betrayal now reached directly into the new one.

“What did Melissa get out of it?”

“Nothing.”

“I don't believe you.”

“She thought she was helping.”

“Did she know it was going to an insurer?”

“Yes.”

“That is not helping.”

“No.”

I looked toward Lacey.

Her eyes were closed now.

The conversation was draining her.

I ended it.

“We’ll talk later.”

Mark started to speak.

I hung up.

Jeremy sat in the nearest pew.

“This is worse than I thought.”

“Yes.”

“I thought I was the one who broke the law.”

“That remains possible.”

He nodded.

No argument.

Lacey whispered, “I’m sorry.”

I looked at her.

“For what part?”

“All of it.”

The hospice nurse returned.

Transport was ready.

As they prepared to move her, Lacey reached for me.

I leaned down.

Her voice was barely audible.

“There is one thing Mark still hasn’t told Karen.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

She looked toward Jeremy.

Then back at me.

“Ask him who paid Melissa.”

“I thought she got nothing.”

Lacey gave a tired, bitter smile.

“That’s what Mark told you.”

“Who paid her?”

“Your father.”

I froze.

“My father?”

Jeremy stood.

“What?”

Lacey closed her eyes.

“Ask Mark.”

The nurse began moving the wheelchair.

I remained in the chapel, unable to follow.

My father had died four years earlier.

Whatever he had done could not be confronted.

Could not be explained directly.

Jeremy looked at me.

“Jill, did your dad know?”

“I don't know.”

But suddenly I remembered something.

Three years ago.

Around the time of Lacey’s marriage.

My father had asked me an odd question over coffee.

If Jeremy ever made a mistake trying to help somebody, would you want to know even if knowing destroyed your marriage?

At the time I thought he was speaking about his own regrets.

Now I wasn't sure.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: My Father’s Role in the Altered Marriage Papers Forced Me to Reconsider
