more than I expected.

“Why?”

“He said your mother had just died.”

I closed my eyes.

Again.

Grief had become everybody’s permission know.”

“What else?”

Mark hesitated.

“Your dad made me promise the arrangement would end after Lacey got treatment.”

Jeremy stared at the phone.

“Did you tell him I had agreed?”

“No.”

“What did he think?”

“That you knew about the insurance paperwork.”

Jeremy laughed without humor.

“So everyone had a slightly different version of the crime.”

“Jeremy,” I said.

He stopped.

Mark continued.

“Your dad did not know Lacey was taking your name.”

My heart tightened.

“How do you know?”

“Because when he found out later, he was furious.”

“Later when?”

“About six weeks afterward.”

Jeremy stood.

“He found out?”

“Yes.”

“What did he do?”

“He confronted me.”

“Not me?”

“He was planning to.”

I remembered my father becoming distant from Jeremy that autumn.

At the time, I blamed grief.

Dad stopped asking Jeremy to help with repairs.

Stopped inviting him breath.

“Because I convinced him Lacey was dying.”

“She didn't die.”

“No.”

“So he kept waiting.”

“Yes.”

“How long did he know?”

“Until he died.”

Four years ago meant he had known the secret for about two years before his death.

Two years.

My father had eaten Christmas dinner across from Jeremy while knowing.

Had hugged me goodbye while knowing.

Had sat in my kitchen while knowing.

I suddenly felt betrayed by a dead man.

That anger had nowhere to go.

“Did Dad ever speak to Lacey?”

“Yes.”

Jeremy and I both reacted.

“When?” I asked.

“Once.”

“Where?”

“Vanderbilt.”

I looked toward the chapel doors through which Lacey had been taken.

“What happened?”

“I wasn't there.”

“Who was?”

“Lacey.”

Of course.

I ended the call without goodbye.

Jeremy followed me outside.

The morning air felt too bright.

Cars passed on the road.

Birds moved through the trees.

Nothing reflected the fact that my understanding of my father had just changed.

“Jill.”

I kept walking.

“Don't.”

He stopped.

I walked to my car and leaned against the hood.

Dad.

My dependable father.

The person who taught us that lies compound interest.

The man who would not tolerate cheating in card games.

He had helped fund a document used to hide my husband’s second marriage.

Maybe without understanding all of it.

Maybe with good intentions.

Those phrases were beginning to sound dangerous.

Jeremy remained several feet away.

“I’m sorry.”

I looked at him.

“You don't get to apologize for him.”

“I know.”

“He knew.”

“Yes.”

“He looked me in the face for two years.”

“Yes.”

“And said nothing.”

Jeremy said nothing.

Good.

My phone rang.

Hospice.

They had arrived.

Lacey was asking for us.

We followed separately.

The hospice room looked less clinical than the hospital.

Softer lighting.

A quilt.

A window facing trees.

Lacey was already in bed.

She looked exhausted.

I moved close.

“My father visited you.”

Her eyes opened.

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

Jeremy remained near the door.

Lacey looked toward him.

Then back at me.

“He apologized.”

“For what?”

“For failing you.”

My throat tightened.

“How had he failed me?”

“He said he should have told you as soon as he realized what was happening.”

“Why didn't he?”

“Because you were grieving.”

I laughed bitterly.

“That excuse again.”

“I told him the same thing.”

“What?”

“That grief did not make you a child.”

Tears burned my eyes.

“What else?”

“He asked me to end the marriage paperwork.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Treatment had started.”

“So he threatened you?”

“No.”

“Jeremy?”

“No.”

“Mark?”

“Very much.”

I stared.

“What did he do?”

“He told Mark he would go to the authorities if the situation continued.”

Jeremy stepped closer.

“What?”

Lacey nodded.

“Your father wanted everything unwound.”

“When?”

“About two years ago.”

My pulse quickened.

“What happened?”

“Mark convinced him the marriage record could not simply disappear without creating more problems.”

“That may have been true,” Jeremy said.

I turned.

“Not now.”

He nodded.

Lacey continued.

“Your father then wanted Jeremy to tell you.”

“Did he talk to Jeremy?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because he died before he could.”

The timeline clicked.

Dad’s heart attack.

Sudden.

No warning.

I had spoken to him the night before.

He had sounded normal.

Maybe he had intended to confront Jeremy the next day.

Maybe not.

I would never know.

“Did he leave anything?”

Lacey’s eyes shifted.

“Yes.”

I froze.

“What?”

“A letter.”

Jeremy stepped forward.

“To Jill?”

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

Lacey looked toward the bedside cabinet.

“My lawyer has it.”

I stared at her.

“Thomas?”

“Yes.”

“Why does your lawyer have my father’s letter?”

“Because your father gave it to me for safekeeping.”

My chest tightened.

“When?”

“The day he visited.”

“Why didn't you give it to me?”

Lacey began crying.

“Because I was afraid.”

I almost laughed.

Of course.

Everyone was afraid.

“What did the letter say?”

“I never opened it.”

“Do you expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

Jeremy said quietly, “I do.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because if she had opened it, she would know whatever your father intended you to know. She just told us she didn't.”

I hated that his reasoning made sense.

“Call Thomas.”

Lacey nodded.

“He was expecting you.”

I called.

Thomas answered.

“Yes?”

“Do you have a letter from my father?”

Silence.

Then, “Yes.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Why haven't you mentioned it?”

“Because Lacey instructed me to release it only under specific circumstances.”

“What circumstances?”

“After she disclosed the marriage to you.”

“I know now.”

“Yes.”

“Then give it to me.”

“I can.”

“Today.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“My office.”

“I’m coming.”

Thomas else?”

“A flash drive.”

Jeremy and I looked at each other.

“Do you know what's on it?”

“No.”

“Did Dad tell investigate?”

“I only know what Lacey told me.”

I looked at her.

“Did my father confront Melissa?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before he came to me.”

“Did she admit anything?”

“I don't know.”

I felt anger rise again.

“You keep saying you don't know because you keep handing off pieces of the truth to someone else.”

Lacey closed her accomplish.

I lowered my voice.

“Why did Dad give you the evidence instead of going to police?”

“Because he was afraid you would be horrified.

“You were never involved.”

“I know.”

Lacey opened her eyes.

“Your father didn't.”

I felt suddenly cold.

My father had kept the secret partly because he believed silence protected me legally.

Again.

Protection.

The most destructive word in this story.

I looked at Jeremy.

“We go to Thomas.”

He nodded.

Lacey whispered my name.

I turned.

“Come back.”

I looked at her.

“When?”

“Today.”

Her voice was barely there.

“I don't think I have tomorrow.”

The anger inside me broke around that sentence.

I stepped closer.

“I'm coming back.”

She nodded.

Jeremy moved toward her.

I waited by the door.

He bent and kissed her forehead.

No secrecy now.

No Tuesday lie.

I watched and still felt pain.

But I did not look away.

Ten minutes later Jeremy and I drove to Thomas Reed’s office.

The letter waited in a sealed brown envelope.

My father’s handwriting covered the front.

For Jill, when the truth is finally unavoidable.

My hands began shaking.

Thomas placed a small flash drive beside it.

“He gave both to Lacey.”

I stared at the words.

“Did he say anything else?”

Thomas nodded.

“He told her something very specific.”

“What?”

“That if you ever read this, you should know he was not trying to protect Jeremy.”

My eyes filled.

“Who was he trying to protect?”

Thomas looked toward the flash drive.

“You.”

I opened the envelope.

Inside were six handwritten pages.

The first line was unmistakably my father’s.

Jill, if you are reading this, then I failed to tell you the truth while I was alive.

I sat down.

Jeremy remained standing.

I continued.

Dad wrote that Mark had come to him asking for money.

That Dad initially believed it involved medical legal fees.

That only later did he learn Jeremy’s name had been used on paperwork claiming a divorce that never happened.

Then came the sentence that made me stop.

I confronted Melissa Grant myself, and she told me Mark was not the person who asked her to change the statement.

I looked up.

Thomas frowned.

Jeremy went still.

I returned to the letter.

The next line was worse.

She said the request came from someone who knew Jill’s marriage records well enough to believe the lie would survive.

I turned the page.

Dad had written a name.

Not Mark.

Not Lacey.

Not David.

Not Karen.

The name belonged to the woman who had issued our original marriage certificate twenty-two years earlier.

Bonnie.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13:
