would hate myself the next morning if I told you while drunk.”

“That is exactly the kind of argument you would accept.”

“Yes.”

“Did you have to.”

“And?”

“He said they were the same ones Thomas had prepared.”

I looked toward Thomas.

“They weren't.”

“No.”

Jeremy continued.

“I saw the outer pages.”

“Not the replacement that?”

“Yes.”

“What did it say about your marital status?”

“Previous marriage.”

I frowned.

“Not current?”

“No.”

“Did that bother you?”

“Yes.”

“What did you do?”

“I asked.”

“Who?”

“The clerk.”

“Bonnie?”

“No. Different intake clerk.”

“What did she say?”

“That the attached statement addressed the discrepancy.”

I looked at Thomas.

He nodded grimly.

“So the altered statement supplied the attachment.”

“Yes.”

Again, both things could be true.

He had been deceived about the contents.

He had also chosen not to verify them.

“What happened afterward?”

“David drove us to Vanderbilt.”

“Us?”

“Lacey and me.”

“Why?”

“She had treatment.”

“Did you tell her you had tried to back out?”

“No.”

“Did David?”

“I don't know.”

“When did you get your phone back?”

“After the infusion.”

“What time?”

“Late her?”

Jeremy frowned.

“I don't know.”

“Think.”

“We were seventeen.”

“Did he ever date her?”

“No.”

“Try to?”

“Maybe.”

“That is not useful.”

“He liked everybody.”

“No.”

I leaned forward.

“Did he like Lacey?”

Jeremy thought longer.

“Yes.”

“Did she like him?”

“As a friend.”

“Was he jealous of you?”

“I don't remember.”

Thomas spoke.

“Why does that matter?”

“Because he spent three years making decisions about Jeremy and Lacey’s relationship.”

Jeremy’s expression changed.

“You think this was personal.”

“I think everyone in this story has claimed medical necessity when personal motives were underneath.”

He nodded slowly.

“I need to talk to David.”

“Not alone.”

“I know.”

Thomas looked at us.

“We can arrange for him to come here.”

I checked the time.

It was evening now.

Lacey’s death had occurred only hours earlier.

I felt as if days had passed.

“Tomorrow morning.”

Jeremy looked surprised.

I said, “I’m done tonight.”

Thomas nodded.

“That is reasonable.”

Jeremy and I left separately.

At home, the banker’s box still covered the kitchen table.

Jeremy stopped in the doorway.

For a second, neither of us knew where to go.

Our bedroom belonged to us historically.

The guest room belonged to him currently.

The kitchen had become an interrogation room.

“I’m making tea,” I said.

He nodded.

“Okay.”

I filled the kettle.

Jeremy sat.

The domestic ordinariness felt almost obscene.

After several minutes he said, “I loved
