26 – Mark’s Letter Revealed He Had Known the Paternity Truth Before Our Wedding—and Why He Chose to Let Jeremy Carry the Blame

I drove to Karen’s alone.

Jeremy asked whether he should come.

I said no.

Not because I wanted another separate version.

Because this was Karen’s marriage before it was Jeremy’s history.

She deserved to choose who entered the room.

Mark’s wedding ring sat on the kitchen table beside a folded sheet of paper.

Karen had not moved either.

She handed me the letter.

“Read it.”

I did.

Mark had written without excuses at first.

Karen, I remembered something tonight that I have spent years teaching myself not to remember.

That sentence alone made my stomach turn.

He described a phone call from Lacey shortly before Jeremy and I married.

She had been in Nashville.

Still recovering from the miscarriage.

Still angry.

She told Mark a doctor had clarified the conception timeline.

Jeremy could not have been the father.

Mark probably was.

Not certainty.

But close enough that Lacey believed it.

I looked at Karen.

“She told him.”

“Yes.”

“Before my wedding.”

“Yes.”

“Did Mark tell Jeremy?”

“No.”

“Why?”

I did.

Mark wrote that Jeremy was already engaged to me.

Already tormented by guilt over Lacey.

Already convinced he had abandoned a pregnant woman.

Mark had considered confessing.

Then Lacey told him not to.

“She told him to keep quiet.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Karen pointed toward the next paragraph.

Lacey had said Jeremy’s guilt was the only proof she had that she had mattered to him.

I closed my eyes.

That sounded like the younger Lacey.

Wounded.

Angry.

Wanting someone else to carry evidence of her pain.

Mark wrote that he accepted her request partly because he feared Karen discovering their affair.

Partly because he did not want Jeremy to know Mark might have fathered the baby.

And partly because he resented Jeremy.

There it was.

Resentment.

Mark admitted he had watched Jeremy move forward with me while Lacey suffered.

He believed Jeremy deserved guilt.

Even guilt for something that was not his.

I lowered the page.

“He punished him.”

“Yes.”

“For twenty-two years.”

“Yes.”

Karen looked exhausted rather than angry.

“I married a man who thought silence was a form of justice.”

I sat beside her.

“He also thought it protected him.”

“That too.”

She stared at his ring.

“He told Amanda the same lie.”

“Yes.”

“He watched our daughter confront Lacey over a truth he already knew.”

“Yes.”

“And he still didn't tell her.”

“No.”

Karen covered her face.

“I don't know who that is.”

I understood.

Not literally.

She knew Mark’s habits.

His coffee.

His snoring.

The way he folded towels badly.

The songs he played in the car.

But moral identity can become unfamiliar faster than a face.

“What are you going to do?”

She looked at me.

“Isn't that funny?”

“What?”

“For days, everybody has been asking you that.”

“Yes.”

“Now I understand why you hate it.”

Despite everything, I smiled.

“A little.”

“I don't know.”

“That is allowed.”

Karen looked toward the ring.

“I don't want him home.”

“Then don't have him home.”

“I don't know whether that means a week or forever.”

“It doesn't have to mean either yet.”

She nodded.

“Will you tell Jeremy?”

“Do you want me to?”

“It concerns him.”

“That doesn't answer my question.”

Karen thought.

“Yes.”

“Okay.”

She looked at me.

“Jill.”

“What?”

“Don't soften it.”

“I won't.”

I returned home before noon.

Jeremy was repairing the loose hinge on the pantry door.

Of course he was.

I stood in the kitchen watching him tighten a screw.

He looked up.

“What?”

“Mark knew.”

His hand stopped.

“Knew what?”

“The baby wasn't yours.”

He stared.

“When?”

“Before we married.”

The screwdriver slipped from his fingers.

It struck the floor.

He did not pick it up.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Lacey called him.”

Jeremy leaned against the counter.

“She told him?”

“Yes.”

“And he didn't tell me.”

“No.”

His face changed slowly.

Twenty-two years of guilt were being removed from one place without disappearing.

Pain does not vanish when responsibility moves.

It relocates.

“Why?”

“Because he was afraid Karen would learn they had slept together.”

Jeremy nodded as if that part made sense.

“And?”

“Because Lacey asked him not to tell you.”

His eyes closed.

“Why?”

“She wanted you to keep feeling guilty.”

Jeremy sat.

I gave him the rest.

“Mark also resented you. He thought you deserved it.”

Jeremy laughed once.

Then again.

Not amusement.

Disbelief.

“I spent twenty-two years thinking I left my pregnant girlfriend.”

“Yes.”

“I married you believing that.”

“Yes.”

“I looked at our wedding pictures and thought about it.”

I did not know that.

“You never told me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I was ashamed.”

There it was.

Always.

Shame making a locked room.

Jeremy pressed both palms against his eyes.

“I thought every good thing with you was partly built on what I did to her.”

My chest tightened.

“Did that affect our marriage?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

He looked at me.

“I thought I owed you less of my sadness because I had chosen you.”

“That doesn't make sense.”

“I know.”

“Try.”

He breathed slowly.

“When we fought, especially early on, I would think I had no right to complain because I had already hurt someone to be with you.”

I stared.

“You turned our marriage into punishment too.”

“Sometimes.”

“Without telling me.”

“Yes.”

“Did you resent me for that?”

“No.”

He paused.

“Sometimes myself.”

I sat opposite him.

“Did guilt make you go back to Lacey when she got sick?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“A lot.”

“So if you had known the pregnancy wasn't yours—”

“I don't know.”

“Don't guess.”

He nodded.

“I don't know.”

That mattered.

We could not rebuild history by changing one fact.

He might still have helped Lacey.

Still loved her.

Still lied.

Or not.

Counterfactuals were another form of fantasy.

Jeremy looked at the floor.

“Did Lacey ever intend to tell me?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Apparently several times.”

“But she didn't.”

“Not until the hospital.”

He nodded.

“I’m angry at her.”

“You’re allowed.”

“She’s dead.”

“You’re still allowed.”

“I loved her.”

“That doesn't cancel anger.”

He looked toward me.

“You sound like her letter.”

“Maybe she finally learned something useful.”

He almost smiled.

Then cried.

I let him.

I did not touch him.

That was not punishment.

I simply did not know whether touch would be comfort, promise, or habit.

When he finished, he picked up the screwdriver.

Then put it on the counter instead of returning to the hinge.

Progress.

“Where’s Sophie?”

“At school.”

“Karen wants her after.”

“Okay.”

He looked toward the clock.

“What do we do now?”

“Nothing for ten minutes.”

Jeremy blinked.

“What?”

“We sit.”

So we did.

No documents.

No phone calls.

No revelations.

Just two people in a kitchen that had held twenty-two years of breakfasts.

Eventually Jeremy said, “I’m sorry.”

“For what part?”

“All of it.”

“That is too big.”

He nodded.

“Then today, I’m sorry I made my guilt into a reason not to trust you with my past.”

That was specific.

“I hear you.”

He did not ask whether I accepted it.

That afternoon we took Sophie home.

Karen hugged her so tightly Sophie complained.

“Grandma, I can't breathe.”

Karen laughed through tears.

“Sorry.”

Sophie looked around.

“Where’s Grandpa?”

“Staying somewhere else for a little while.”

“Because you're fighting?”

Karen crouched.

“Because I need space.”

“Is he coming back?”

Karen paused.

“I don't know.”

Sophie frowned.

“Everybody says that now.”

I almost laughed.

Karen did.

“That’s because sometimes grown-ups really don't know.”

Sophie accepted this more easily than adults did.

On our way out, Karen stopped Jeremy.

“Mark knew.”

“I know.”

“I’m sorry.”

Jeremy looked at her.

“You didn't do it.”

“I still feel like—”

“No.”

His voice was gentle.

“Don't inherit his guilt.”

Karen’s eyes filled.

That was perhaps the healthiest sentence Jeremy had spoken all week.

We drove home.

Halfway there, Thomas called.

“I have the full Bonnie email set.”

“Anything new?”

“Yes.”

Jeremy put the phone on speaker.

Thomas continued.

“There is a message from Melissa to Bonnie written the morning after the marriage filing.”

“What does it say?”

“Melissa was worried the filing was invalid and wanted to withdraw her notarization.”

Jeremy frowned.

“Could she?”

“Not easily after filing.”

“What did Bonnie say?”

“She told Melissa to contact an attorney.”

“And?”

“Melissa responded that David told her not to panic because Jeremy would straighten out his first marriage.”

I felt cold.

“What does that mean?”

“Unknown.”

Jeremy looked at me.

“I never told David I was divorcing Jill.”

“I believe you.”

Thomas continued.

“Bonnie asked the same question.”

“What did David say?”

“He isn't on that email.”

“Melissa’s answer?”

Thomas read:

David says Jeremy and Jill have been functionally separated for years and only stay legally married because of family finances.

I stared through the windshield.

“That was false.”

“Yes.”

Jeremy’s face hardened.

“We weren't separated.”

“No.”

“Who told David that?”

“That’s the next issue.”

“What?”

“Melissa says Lacey told him.”

Jeremy shook his head.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“You don't know.”

“No, but Lacey knew we weren't separated.”

“Then why say it?”

Thomas answered.

“Possibly because it made the paperwork easier to rationalize.”

I thought of Lacey’s notebook.

The medical urgency.

The desire to be chosen.

The lies growing around both.

“Is there proof Lacey said it?”

“No direct email yet.”

“Then don't treat it as fact.”

“I won't.”

Jeremy looked at me.

“Thank you.”

“For
