you?”

“No.”

“Anything else?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

I watched him.

“Why somewhere in that mess, you decided my identity was another tool.”

David closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Jeremy’s voice became quiet.

“That is the part I don't know how to forgive.”

David looked at him.

“I’m not asking.”

“Good.”

Silence.

Then I asked the question that no?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

David laughed sadly.

“Because she didn't love me.”

“That simple?”

“No.”

“What else?”

“She said marrying me for insurance would destroy the one friendship she trusted.”

I thought about that.

Lacey had refused to use David in one way.

Then used him in several others.

“Did she tell you she planned to ask Jeremy?”

“Not it.”

“At first.”

“What changed?”

“She got her.”

“Yes.”

“Even though I was married.”

“Yes.”

“Even though Jill didn't know.”

David looked at me.

“Yes.”

Jeremy sat back.

“That isn't love.”

David flinched.

“No?”

“It’s calm.

“It is.”

I watched him.

A week earlier, Jeremy had described his own endless fixing as love.

Now he could see the distinction in David.

Would he see it in himself?

He did.

His face changed.

“So was some of what I did.”

No one answered.

He continued.

“I kept showing up after Lacey told me not to.”

“Yes,” I said.

“I kept renovating after she told me to it was me needing to be needed.”

“Yes.”

Jeremy nodded.

That truth seemed to settle somewhere deep.

Thomas turned back to David.

“Did Lacey ever tell you she wanted Jeremy to leave Jill?”

“Yes.”

Jeremy looked at him.

“When?”

“Early.”

“What did you say?”

“That he wouldn't.”

“How did you know?”

“Because I knew him.”

Jeremy looked toward me.

“Was I that predictable?”

David answered.

“Yes.”

“Then why help her marry me?”

“Because I thought a temporary lie could give her something without me.

“Yes.”

“Without my consent.”

“Yes.”

“Do you understand how arrogant that is?”

“Yes.”

“Now?”

“Yes.”

“Then?”

“No.”

I believed that too.

Thomas’s phone buzzed.

He checked it.

“Bonnie’s counsel sent the call log.”

He scanned it.

“There are two calls that day.”

David
