room because they have nobody nearby.

“Yes.”

Jeremy looked down.

The house he had built might be sold.

I watched him absorb that.

“Are you okay?”

He looked at me.

“It isn't mine to keep.”

“That wasn't what I asked.”

“No.”

He thought.

“I’m sad.”

“Good.”

He almost smiled.

“You’ve started saying that a lot.”

“Sad is allowed.”

“Yes.”

He looked toward the architectural plans.

“I thought finishing the house meant I hadn't failed her.”

“And now?”

“Now I think maybe finishing it would just be another way of refusing to let go.”

I nodded.

The decision was not final.

But the direction felt clean.

Later that afternoon, Thomas called again.

He had confirmed Amanda’s beneficiary designation.

If Sophie died before receiving certain inherited funds, I was alternate trustee-beneficiary.

Not personally entitled to everything.

Trustee.

My role would have been to manage the money for charitable purposes.

That made more sense.

Amanda had not secretly decided to make me rich.

She had decided that if the worst happened, someone outside Mark’s control should manage the funds.

“What did she know about me?”

I asked Thomas.

“Apparently enough to think you wouldn’t let Mark control the money.”

I laughed softly.

“She was right.”

Then Thomas added, “There’s a handwritten instruction.”

“What?”

“If Jill refuses, appoint Karen.”

I closed my eyes.

Amanda had not tried to trap me.

She had created another choice.

“How old was she when she wrote this?”

“Twenty-five.”

“So young.”

“Yes.”

“And somehow more careful than all of us.”

Thomas did not answer.

That evening, Jeremy stood at the kitchen doorway.

“Sophie’s with Karen?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

He looked toward the table.

Empty now.

No banker’s box.

No papers.

I had moved everything into a locked cabinet.

The kitchen belonged to food again.

“I made a call today.”

My stomach tightened.

“To whom?”

“A therapist.”

I stared.

“Why?”

“Because I don't think I can fix this by understanding the facts.”

The answer surprised me.

“You’re right.”

“I need to understand why I kept choosing secrecy.”

“Yes.”

“And why I made other people responsible for my choices.”

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“My appointment is tomorrow.”

I nodded.

“Good.”

He looked almost relieved that I did not praise him.

“I’m not telling you so you’ll stay.”

“Good.”

“I’m telling you because if we separate, I still need to change.”

That mattered.

More than grand apologies.

More than flowers.

More than the house.

I nodded.

“Then go.”

He turned toward the living room.

“Jeremy.”

He looked back.

“I’m glad you called.”

His eyes filled.

“Thank you.”

That night, for the first time since the courthouse, I slept more than six hours.

In the morning, I woke before him and stood in the kitchen alone.

Sunlight came through the blinds.

No ringing phone.

No courthouse papers.

No dead woman’s secrets waiting on the table.

For almost five minutes, nothing happened.

Then someone knocked.

I opened the door.

A courier stood there with a certified envelope.

“For Jill Tolley.”

I signed.

The return address belonged to the county clerk’s office.

Inside was a formal notice.

The county had completed an emergency records review.

The second marriage certificate had been administratively flagged as invalid pending judicial confirmation.

My marriage to Jeremy remained the only active marriage in the county system.

I read the sentence twice.

Then noticed the second page.

A handwritten note from Bonnie.

Jill,

The system can correct a record.

It cannot correct what people did with it.

I am sorry.

No explanation.

No defense.

Just that.

I folded the note.

Jeremy entered the kitchen.

“What is it?”

I handed him the formal notice.

He read it.

His shoulders dropped.

“So legally…”

“We were never divorced.”

“No.”

“And the second marriage…”

“Likely invalid.”

He looked at me.

That should have felt like restoration.

It did not.

Legal status had never been the real question.

Jeremy seemed to understand.

“This doesn't fix us.”

“No.”

He set the notice down.

“Does it change anything?”

I thought carefully.

“Yes.”

His eyes lifted.

“It removes one uncertainty.”

“What uncertainty?”

“Whether I have to decide what our marriage is while another one still exists legally.”

He nodded.

“And now?”

“Now I decide based on us.”

That frightened him.

It frightened me too.

But for the first time, fear was not being used to delay the truth.

<a
