foundation.

I looked at him.

“Were you unhappy in our marriage?”

“Sometimes.”

“Was I?”

“You tell me.”

I thought.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I felt responsible for everyone.”

He almost smiled.

“Same disease.”

“Different symptoms.”

“Yes.”

“I resented you sometimes too.”

“For what?”

“For withdrawing when my family needed help.”

His face tightened.

“Like Karen’s mortgage.”

“Yes.”

“And your mother.”

“Yes.”

“I thought you wanted to give away pieces of us to everyone.”

“I thought you were selfish.”

“Both were partly true.”

“Probably.”

He looked at me.

“That is more balanced than our fights used to be.”

“We had twenty-two years to practice badly.”

A faint laugh.

Then quiet.

“We were not perfect before Lacey.”

“No.”

“But we were real.”

“Yes.”

That mattered more than nostalgia.

Later that week, Thomas convened a meeting about Second Room.

Karen attended.

So did the nonprofit attorney.

The house appraisal came back higher than expected.

If sold, the proceeds could repay Amanda’s estate fully and leave additional equity.

Lacey’s separate estate funds could create a smaller charitable program without risking Sophie’s inheritance.

Karen looked at the numbers.

“This feels obvious.”

The attorney nodded.

“Sometimes good estate planning creates a choice that becomes clearer once facts are known.”

Karen signed an instruction to enforce repayment upon sale.

No guilt.

No apology.

Sophie’s money would remain Sophie’s.

Then she approved exploring a separate charitable fund with Lacey’s remaining assets.

I asked that my name not be used.

Not yet.

The attorney asked, “Do you want a role?”

“I don't know.”

Jeremy glanced at me but said nothing.

Karen answered for herself.

“I do.”

I looked at her.

“You?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Amanda wanted the project evaluated honestly.”

She looked toward the social worker.

“And because I like the transportation idea.”

I smiled.

“That is a good reason.”

Karen smiled back.

The project stopped being Lacey’s monument that day.

It became something living people could decide to build differently.

The house was listed.

Jeremy did not object.

He did ask to finish two safety repairs before showings.

I said, “Why?”

He smiled sadly.

“Because the railing is loose and someone could fall.”

“That answer I accept.”

He repaired it.

Nothing else.

That was progress too.

The county issued another notice the following week.

The second marriage filing would be referred for judicial invalidation and administrative correction.

Bonnie’s conduct remained under investigation.

Melissa’s notarization was under review.

No criminal charges had been announced.

Thomas reminded everyone not to predict outcomes.

Good.

I did not need punishment to validate harm.

One afternoon, Bonnie called me.

I almost did not answer.

Then did.

“Jill.”

“Yes.”

“I wanted to apologize directly.”

“You already wrote.”

“I know.”

“What do you want from me?”

“Nothing.”

That was the correct answer.

She continued.

“I made decisions I had no right to make.”

“Yes.”

“I thought I was balancing something from long ago.”

“You weren't.”

“I know.”

“You helped create a new harm because you thought an old harm was unfair.”

“Yes.”

I looked out the window.

“Did you dislike me?”

Bonnie hesitated.

“For years.”

“Why?”

“I thought you knew Lacey was pregnant when you married Jeremy.”

“I knew she had been pregnant.”

“But not that she was still pregnant until months later.”

“No.”

“I thought you knew more.”

“You built an opinion from incomplete facts.”

“Yes.”

“And then used that opinion in your job.”

“Yes.”

I appreciated that she did not soften it.

“Why did you call me when the record surfaced?”

“Because when I saw your name, I knew the thing I had helped bury had come back.”

“So you wanted to confess.”

“I wanted to give you the record.”

“That is not the same.”

“No.”

“Did you think I would never find the rest?”

“I hoped you would.”

I almost laughed.

“Everyone hoped I would somehow discover what nobody wanted to tell me.”

“I know.”

“That's cowardice.”

“Yes.”

The call ended without forgiveness.

That was okay.

Not every apology requires closure.

That evening, I sat on the back porch with Jeremy.

No phones.

No papers.

September air had begun cooling.

He asked, “Can I ask you something?”

“Yes.”

“Are you staying because you want to, or because leaving feels like another crisis you don't want?”

The question surprised me.

“I don't know.”

He nodded.

“That is fair.”

“I have not decided to stay.”

“I know.”

“I also have not decided to leave.”

“Yes.”

“Do you want me to stay?”

His eyes know.”

“What else?”

He thought.

“Because I like our life.”

“Parts of it.”

“Yes.”

“Because you’re afraid of losing me.”

“Yes.”

“Anything else?”

“Because I want the chance to build something honest with you if you want that too.”

I watched him.

No promise that he would never hurt me again.

No claim that therapy had changed him in a week.

Just a request for possibility.

“What would honest look like?”

“I don't know yet.”

“Bad start.”

He almost smiled.

“It would look like saying the bad sentence before I improve it.”

I nodded.

“That is better.”

“So here is one.”

I waited.

“I am afraid if you take too long to decide, I will become angry at you.”

That surprised me.

“Why?”

“Because I’ll feel punished.”

My chest tightened.

There it was.

The bad sentence.

He continued before I reacted.

“And that anger would be unfair because you don't owe me speed.”

I looked at him.

“But the first feeling still exists.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

He frowned.

“Good?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because now it is in the room instead of secretly shaping your behavior.”

Jeremy exhaled.

“I hated saying it.”

“Exactly.”

We sat in silence.

Then I gave him mine.

“I am afraid if you improve too quickly, I’ll distrust the improvement.”

He looked at me.

“That makes sense.”

“And part of me wants you to suffer long enough that it feels equal.”

His face changed.

I hated saying it.

So I knew it mattered.

“That is ugly.”

“Yes.”

“Thank you for telling me.”

I looked toward the yard.

“I don't want to build a marriage out of punishment.”

“Neither do I.”

“Then we need time.”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

He almost laughed.

“I’m not touching that question.”

“Good.”

Two days later, Thomas called.

“The house has an offer.”

“That fast?”

“Cash buyer.”

“Who?”

“A medical contract for less than a minute.

Then signed the release of his interest.

No speech.

No dramatic handover.

Just a signature.

The house would be sold.

Amanda’s loan repaid.

Sophie protected.

Lacey’s separate estate would fund a smaller charitable program if Karen and the estate board chose.

The it?”

“Yes.”

“But?”

“It also feels finished.”

I nodded.

Then my phone rang.

Thomas again.

“What now?”

His voice was quiet.

“The judge signed the order.”

“What order?”

“The second marriage record.”

My heart not.

Thomas added, “The county will annotate the record.
